This is from the movie Hail Hail Rock N Roll. Keith put this band together for Chuck's birthday. It's worth watching.

Linda's version of this made it to number 16 on the US charts. Chuck's version only made it to 37. The original version by Chuck was the song that inspired the Beatles' Back in the USSR.

I love this old classic, written by Chuck Berry! Linda’s cover from her “Living in the U.S.A.” album brought it roaring back. This is a great performance. Linda was always at her happiest when singing with other people, especially her heroes like Chuck Berry. Thanks John Chu and Harri for your appreciation of the greatest music. 🌺✌️

One of the great female vocalists in music history. Saw her live a few times in the middle and late 70’s. She could throw her voice to the back of any venue. A truly remarkable artist and woman. 👈

The practice session from the movie Hail Hail Rock & Roll (1987) shows Chuck Berry schooling Keith Richards on the intro riff's famous "bend" to "Oh Carol". Chuck would not let Keith continue until he got it right. Chuck wrote it that way and if Keith was going to play, he was going to play it right.

1st time I've seen this - it's FANTASTIC! Used to work with a guy who played guitar in his church band. One evening, one of his band mates called him up, said, "Come over to my place quick, got somebody here you gotta meet.". My friend said, "We're having dinner. I'll be there shortly.". He took his time eating, & his friend called back & said, "Where ARE you? Get over here NOW!". My friend asked, "What's the rush?". His friend replied, "I've got Keith Richards sitting in my living room!". Needless to say, my friend nearly got a speeding ticket on his way to play gospel songs & jam with Mr. Keith Richards! Go figure! Thanks for this, sir - really enjoyed it!

I remember seeing Chuck Berry as my first concert ever... in 1970. I was 16, got my driver's license on my birthday, had my own car and an after school job. I got to see a few of the oldies, but Chuck was special.
I remember a band played for about half an hour until the audience started chanting "we want Chuck!" When he came out the crowd screamed... until he played a note. The crowd went silent, took a step forward and pretty much dropped their jaws. I can still see that moment in my mind...

i love this show, the movie, 'Hail Hail Rock and Roll", produced, iirc, by Keith to celebrate Chuck's 60th with a show at home in Memphis. Watched it late one night at work in TV land when it came out. A treasure and an intriguing glimpse into the icon.
Check out who else is on the bill.
ok: Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, Julian Lennon, a weird and wistful moment. I'm probably missing someone.

You had to know how Chuck preformed. For a show the promoter had to get a local band that knew his song for the night. Chuck would show up go on stage with no rehearsal. Do the show. The office was to pay him in cash which he would put into his guitar case and leave. Keith put this together for him to play with a pro band. If I remember from the movie Chuck wasn't appreciative of the thought.

  • @Mordheim222

This was a great concert. In the middle of one of the other songs you can see Chuck leaning in and saying something to Keith with a big smile on his face. Keith shakes his head vigorously and says Nooooooo, to which Chuck laughs. It turned out that Chuck was mischievously suggesting that they change keys in the middle of the song. That just cracks me up.

Hail, Hail Rock ‘n’ Roll! Fox Theatre, New York City, October 18, 1986 -- "In 1986, Keith Richards invited a roster of great musicians to honor Chuck Berry for an evening of music to commemorate Berry on his 60th birthday, including performances by Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, Linda Ronstadt, Etta James and Julian Lennon." -- "Repaying some dues," was how Richards put it after the show. And then some! In their early years The Rolling Stones covered several of Berry's songs, including "Carol", "You Can't Catch Me", "Around and Around", and "Talkin' About You". "Back in the U.S.A." was a top forty hit for Chuck Berry in 1959 and Linda Ronstadt in 1978. The Beach Boys took the title idea and mashed it with Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen" to release "Surfin' U.S.A." in 1963. The Beatles tweaked it with the lead off track from their eponymous album, "Back in the U.S.S.R." in 1968. And Steve Miller Band took the idea and ran away with it on "Living in the U.S.A." in 1969.

It is Sept 5 at 1am in the morning ...but it's really just an hour past midnight AND...I just ran across for the first time, this video too. I was looking up different artists that did Back In The USA and your channel came up. You and I have the same reaction to Chuck and everything. Linda, Keith, etc... Such a great American song that Chuck wrote eh?
One more thing - whenever I've watched Chick Berry, he seems to never take his songs seriously. Maybe he didn't have the confidence or maybe he just didn't give a shit.....I dunno, but his songs are classic anyway.
