More about Stephanie Trick:
Stephanie Trick is an acclaimed American stride pianist known for her remarkable skill and dedication to the stride, ragtime, and early jazz piano traditions. Born in 1987 in St. Louis, Missouri, Trick began piano lessons at the age of five. Her classical training provided a solid foundation, but it was her introduction to ragtime and stride piano that truly captivated her. Influenced by the works of legendary pianists such as Fats Waller, James P. Johnson, and Willie "The Lion" Smith, Trick honed her technique and developed a unique style that blends technical precision with vibrant, energetic performances.
Throughout her career, Stephanie Trick has performed at prestigious venues and festivals worldwide, including the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Gilmore Keyboard Festival, and the International Stride Piano Summit. Her virtuosity and engaging stage presence have earned her a dedicated following among jazz enthusiasts and critics alike. In addition to her solo work, Trick frequently collaborates with her husband, Italian pianist Paolo Alderighi, creating dynamic four-hands piano performances that celebrate the rich history of jazz and stride piano. Trick's discography includes several well-received albums, showcasing her exceptional talent and passion for early jazz piano. Her contributions to preserving and promoting stride piano have solidified her reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of this classic American art form.

As a piano beginner, I think this level is science fiction for me.
I have been playing longer than she has been alive and it is also science fiction for me.
Nicely put!
Before Stephanie's late father passed away some years ago, I was in discussions with him about organising an Australian concert tour for Stephanie. Sadly his untimely death occurred before the discussions had made much headway, so nothing eventuated. However, it's nice to see she has a very successful career along with her husband Paolo.
TWO thumbs up. She plays so well that I'll bet Fats Waller would be a fan if he was alive today.
Fats is definitely the era she's channeling (and that was later recycled by guests on the '50s & '60s Lawrence Welk Show). There're folks that took stride a bit more modern in the years after him (including Mary Lou Williams!); hopefully this impressive young lady will keep exploring the repertoire, and broadening within the genre.
It's an incredible ability to do something with the left hand while doing something completely different with the right! This produces magic.
Not really. Many pianists do it. It's just insane amounts of practice.
That's certainly not the case... It's a special talent, you can practice for a hundred years and you can't play like this... True...Think before you put stupid remarks!!!?
@@keithsunderland8839 No, it's second nature after you put in the practice. And a lot of these prodigy or so called talented players were thrashed by tiger parents and forced to practice incessantly when they were younger.
@@keithsunderland8839I definitely agree with you. Thanks for posting your thoughtful comment and assessment.
Don’t forget those Yamaha Electone players who also play bass with their feet.
I read that she's only 22? And she only started playing stride 2 years ago! Her playing is so fast and clean with no miscues! Hard to believe..bravo young lady!
You read it in a very old book. Didn't you watch her playing with her husband? I saw her playing 25 years ago.
Born in 1987
She also plays some mean boogie. Right up there with Ladyva.🎉
Per description, DOB = 1987. She's in her late 30's now.
@@DugrozReports And probably still not at her peak, that glorious point where "what you know" and "what you can convince your body to do" align. An athlete might be several years past peak at this point (unless they're juicing), but a musician is just getting warmed up!
SHE IS EXCELLENT.
I love that the dude keeps trying to get in the video and it fades out juuuuuuuuuust in time so we don't hear him. Perfection 👌
Amazingly talented and beautiful too🙏👏👏👏🏆🥹
Holy moly! The joint sure is jumping.
Bravo Stéphanie tu es formidable congratulations ❤❤❤❤
Scott Joplin would approve as well.... he might say it's too fast.
Absolutely excellent.... Keep up your talent 👍👏👍👏👍👏👍
Miss Monique 🙂🙏🌷💗
Definitely not too fast. In the heyday of the big band era and swing, tempos were fast, like with "Jumpin' at the Savoy" and all the rest.
@@jerry-skids Scott Joplin sometimes wrote specifically on his music "not to be played too fast", that's what Monique is referring to. You seem to be under the impression that what is being played here is "big band" or "swing" music, but those are completely different genres which came much later than the ragtime, stride, boogie-woogie and blues featured here.
She is incredible! A true genius!
Stephanie Trick,
Born 1987,

USA.
SHE is Fantastic and Unbelievable.
I love the stride style. Very nice!
Twenty first Centry music can`t hold a candle to this early twentieth genius.
La ascolterei per ore. Fantastica
An incredible, beautiful, amazing pianist. Truly THE QUEEN OF STRIDE.
Absolutely incredible!!!! Horowitz/Tatum. So much energy and elegance
The best stride pianists alive ...
Possibly the best technician, but she will never feel it, nor play it, the way it was played by the truly inspired.
22:50 I respectfully beg to differ. 😊. This is my first listening of her and I’d like to hear a little slower stuff (ex: Butch Thompson style) but she and her husband are great! Fats would be happy hearing her.
@@jibbits6499I also have to demur in the context of stride ?fast and deep impactful she connects …emotionally I dare u to stay rigid when she plays
Yes, she is.
Merci little baby tu es formidable congratulations ❤❤❤❤
How the hell does anyone play like this. Amazing 👍
Her left hand was a powerful machine.
Beautiful to watch. ST you are amazing
freakishly good.... were you born 125 years ago?!
mesmerising...... you go lady
A beautiful, incredible, down to earth, smart, pleasant pianist! Whereever she and her equal incredible husband and pianist Paolo Alderighi travels and entertains; they leaves rememberable evenings and memories! 🥰😘❣ She IS THE QUEEN OF STRIDE!✌❤
The incredible part is the way she and Paolo interact when playing together.
I think Fats would be jealous ❤
Absolutely beautiful such amazing talent.
I don't believe she's human. WOW!
Quel talent ❤❤❤❤
Love Stephanie! A truly GREAT musician! ❤
Phenomenal!!
LOVE your stuff Stephanie! Thanks for making my day. "After you've gone........" I'll be humming that tune for days. :)
Fats would approve!
And Piano bars
Yes!
Stephanie is arguably one of the best stride pianists alive right now.
Without a doubt!
Who is arguably better? i don't listen much to this genre but the most striking thing about her playing is her rhythm it is immaculate (rare as hens teeth that gift). I love the duets with her husband that is an art what they are producing is amazing he perfectly dovetails her rhythm pretty much impossible to do in my experience its like one person is playing the piano. Sounds like a wonderfully tunned music box love it where do i find more?
@@DreamWalker687 Martin Spitznagel is another great player but it's hard to surpass any of these pianists with another pianist, they're all equally great but Stephanie so far holds the top of the heap in my opinion.
That's awesome, I hadn't heard of her until now. Rossano Sportiello is the current master, in my opinion (and my favorite living pianist). I was floored by Stephanie's playing though, and will definitely check out more!
@@rdwnmusic6912 Rossano I feel has the major advantage in bebop piano more than stride. His stride stuff is alright but his single note work on contemporary jazz is where it's really at.
That was a blast..you're terrific and will never have to deal with a gym membership..your arms alone get all the workout they will ever need.
was this lady born 100 years ago? Her left hand is an independent life form. Has she met Hiromi? This is thrilling music. IO love it
GREAT playing!
Helluva piano player!❤❤❤
Omg I forgot about her. Steph, you are beyond amazing.
Thanks! Yes she is incredible!
STRIDE is the BEST... has so much happening with crazy melody plus corresponding rhythm.... gotta LOVE it.
Love it
Beautiful touch!
Absolutely love this. Happy music ... so glad this style is alive and doing well, So many cross overs - so many attached new genres . Love love love the special collaboration between couples. So special, unique and rare !! Simply wonderful. Thank you for sharing this.
Brava
I always wanted to be this good.
It's like watching a cartoon when movies were silent and there was an accompaniest.
Just wow!!!
Great Stephanie !!!!
SHE is the Female Art Tatum. Truly Unbelievable.
HOLD UP,STEADY NOW.GOOD,VERY GOOD BUT,PLEASE LEAVE ART TATUM TO RIP.REMEMBER,THAT RACHMANINOV SAID OF ART "THE GREATEST PIANIST TO EVER LIVE""
The Rachmaninoff statement about Tatum is an urban legend. Nobody had ever come up with documented proof that he even attended a Tatum performance. There is some documented evidence that he heard Eddy Duchin and a few other jazz or swing artists perform.
she doesn t have Tatum s hands ,she s very good but she can t do what tatum did .The tenth with one or two notes in between .It is the minimum requirement. She s more like early stride pianists.
Harmonically too.
Amazing talent!
you are an amazing young lady, thank you
I would love to resurect Fats Waller for a chance to see her and him jam.
Found you Roman! By your mention of "Stride" ... a term Id just became aware in past few months. I was first hypnotized and mesmerized by the sound, speed, rhythms, thant entranced by the "charm" that embodies Stephanie and her heartfelt joy and love of experiencing such wondrous music from her own talent. 💗💗💗
I can only imagine as a 'great athlete' displays their joy upon a great play in exuberant physical outbursts. I can see, in my minds eye, that Stephanie upon completing a piece ... steps away from the piano w elegance to then immediately jump around, running to all around in High Five slaps whilst bursting w joy wootin'n'hollering!!!
Well thats actually what U feel like doing each time she finishes a tune.
Thank you Roman and Stephanie 🎉
I can play like that.....then I stopped dreaming and fell out of bed!
how to make a piano laugh its ass off...... irresistable
thumbs up!
Wow! just wow!
Amazing…
She's great!
❤… proper
Bravo...
Wow!
I discover stride piano with this and i love it tx for the video
I wish there was something better than just a thumbs up.
You can subscribe though☺
Even AI has to sit down and eat a bowl of Chipps! WOW!
Day-um!!!
Great compilation. I thought I had all of Stephanie's videos but there were a few there that I don't remember seeing.
Just subscribed! 💃🕺
Muscle memory at work!
Muscles don’t have memories.
Cutie Cutie 😊
❤
Roman: great job!! Can you make one with her Boogie Woogies??🎉🎉
I’ll add that to the list! Thanks for the recommendation! ❤️
J'essaie aussi de faire du stride mais ....je galère!

This is how the last human on Earth will have to play music!
I personally hate playing strike. this is insane to watch! :)
Funny 😃
She's truly a genius, but goes a little fast for me (gettin' p;d? 😎).
Just for grins, I tried playing a few snippets at .5 speed. It worked surprisingly well: the 1-octave shift was fine, anbd it didn't feel like the melody didn't feel like it was shot out of a cannon. But watching was a bit spooky: it looked just liked it was being played at a norml speed.
In digital format, slowing things down by one half doesn’t lower the pitch an octave. It’s merely reading the code half as fast. There’s no spinning disc that slows down, like an LP.
What great piano players have in common is that they don't try to play too fast.
Fantastic piano playing. She's a piano savant.
My only constructive criticism would be that she should try to loosen up a little bit and work on giving the music more "feel" with micro-timing variations. Watch some videos of Art Tatum. Obviously it's a bit silly to tell any pianist to "just play a little bit more like Art Tatum" because the guy is an absolute unique genius, but what I notice about Tatum's playing is that he plays a bit more loose, he varies his dynamics a bit and often plays a bit softer in his left hand, and then he'll give his playing feel by loosening up the timing of his notes a bit in his right hand so the music swings a little. Again, this is not easy to do, and many jazz musicians (and also many non-jazz musicians) would recognize Tatum as probably one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century.
With all that said, look, I cannot play 1/10 as well as Ms Trick. She's amazing, and I bet she'll continue to develop groove and feel over time. What's she's playing is very very hard, and she's doing it very well.
I thought the same thing.
I. think I love u>
I mean it's nice and technically impressive but all this was accomplished by the time of Tatum so what would be truly impressive would be an honest polytonal expression of stride between this and Cecil ya know what I mean? Anyway ❤
I never knew that there was a name associated with this type of “Jazz” ? But this type of “Slap-stick nockem -down “ Key-stone-cops music goes well with any-fast pace theatrical moment? As for the pianist. I think that they need a live-fast-die-young attitude to their playing ability?!!!
This is a well-known, very traditional, old-school jazz style known as stride. It refers to the jumps the left hand makes, hitting a low base note and then “striding” up towards the center of the keyboard to play a chord, while the right hand plays a melody above. You don’t know jazz very well at all if you don’t know what stride is. Some of the most familiar names in jazz excelled in stride, perhaps most notably Art Tatum, whose accuracy, speed and creativity were unparalleled in his day. Not too many young pianists really work at it these days, in part because few can do it as well as the old school players. I suggest you lose the snarky attitude towards this young woman, who is paying her respects to this great tradition while being quite the entertainer herself.
@@gatesurfer touche!
If all she can do is play fast, I'm not interested. What she has here is good, but I searched through for something something slower, more expressive, more sensitive and soulful. Nope. Nada. Zip, zilch, zero. She's good, as far as she goes; she just doesn't go very far...
That was my first reaction as well .
I know James Booker is not quite “ stride “ ( I think )
But he is quintessential New Orleans and I have been listening to a lot of him lately .
So elegant .
Maybe now that she has mastered the speed she will slow down and feel it .
There is certainly a place for show off speed , but in the long run music is emotion
@GardenerGeorge Yes, and since she's so young, she has (Lord willing!) plenty of time to explore and to progress, developing and refining that raw talent into something truly beautiful and compelling!
Very, Very Good!! A bit one-dimensional but totally amazing, nonetheless. Here's a lovely, cute lady, also very talented, but her thing is Boogie-Woogie... and did I mention she's really cute?? Ladyva: th-cam.com/video/OzSypP3jki8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sTX-D3RnLCSVQpu_
Tom Brier approved.
Impressive, but if you'd gave to sit through a whole concert itwould get a bit tiresome after a while. (Not to mention her poor left arm!)
Too bad youtube doesn't have the decency to keep from interrupting like a child...
Well, that title is no hype.
sounds like a mis-aligned player piano where the mechanism moves too fast... all her stylings are like that-- just not pleasant-- take some ambien before you play...
