- Big shout out to @irisradinger1632 . It was her suggestion to do Dan V's cover of this song. I loved the first video and it did bring back fond memories of the books and movies with my children. However, Dan Vasc can get you emotional very quickly of which I was warned.
Both gentlemen sang the song amazingly so I wont say one is better. however I did find the video of the first one distracting from the lyrics. I enjoyed listening to the words which Billy wrote and going to another place.

Billy's version was great but I think Dan's version surpasses it.
I seem to watch a lot of your videos at night when a can’t sleep (most nights). They are a blessing and a curse (but not really). You and and videos keep me company but there are times I get started and keep me up. This was great one as they all are. I mentioned it before and I think emailed too (sending another) but since the 4th is coming play his Star Spangle Banner for the 4th. Then watch on the side perhaps watch his apology video. It just makes you want to watch more of his videos. He also passed a million subs not that long ago. Thanks. Take care.

Billy Boyd co-wrote the song with Howard Shore, Frances Walsh and Phillipa Boyens, it was written for the Hobbit, (one of my all time favourite movies ) the words certainly do resonate with war - any war, especially WWI & WWII, I had only ever heard Billy's version before, but Dan V's cover was also excellent, thank you for sharing

Dan’s version always brings me to tears. This was recorded just a few months after his father passed away from cancer. His emotional goodbye is so moving.
I think this is a beautiful song, sweetly and sensitively sung by Billy. When Dan takes it on, though, adding his gorgeous voice and his even deeper emotion - just exquisite. Thanks for playing both. Take care of yourself.

Billy Boyd wrote & sang this song for The Hobbit and has the connection to it as he also plays the part of Pippin the Hobbit. I know they only had a very small window of time in a day to record his song for the movie, too. He had a flight to catch, if I remember correctly. The movie clips were nostalgic even if there were many from LOTR scenes instead of The Hobbit.
Even though I like the original, I absolutely adore Dan's cover. His voice has such a rich, warm tone, and his delivery is so passionate & emotional. The simplicity of the background works really well to direct your focus on nothing more than the singer and the song. It's one of my favorites by Dan.😊

Honestly I never even thought about that song until I heard him sing it!!
Dan's version is so much better than the original. His voice is richer... as always he puts so much emotion into his music.... into the performance.
And the fact that he had lost his beloved father not too long before he recorded this...added even more emotion.

Dan is very special... one of a kind... and I, over the years have enjoyed so much of his music.... his sense of humor... his kindness... he is the best.

This song is perfect, amazing and Dan perfect too, tks This song closes the Hobbit movies by introducing us to the Lord of the Rings movies.
