I like how they stress "all-new" Chinese pantheon giving me hope that it is gonna be better or at least less shit than waking the dragon was. Also that they wont add any of those horrific extra units that just reduced the uniqueness of each faction and added nothing to them otherwise.
@tums1997 I was OK with the healer once he was made into a single unit, Hippocrates but I won't shed tears if he's gone. Will say the Norse do need better anti air unit than base but the rest just removes the uniqueness of the Civs.
I'm putting money on expansion pack 2 being either Aztecs or Babylonians. - Aztecs have that great mod, but I am not sure if they devs want to lift that and make it seem like they are just yoinking someone else's work. Plus the Aztecs are right at the end of the Middle Ages, compared to the Bronze Age Egyptians, Iron Age Greeks and early Middle Ages Norse. Feels slightly out of place, not to mention they are not even on a connected land-mass with the others. But they are popular, so they have that going for them. - Babylonians however fit in with the setting much better. They have plentiful gods and goddess to pick from, some of which are pretty well-known in popular culture like Ishtar for example. Not to mention they can use units which were originally cut from AoM (like the griffon). But perhaps I am slightly off, and it's Mayans, Assyrians, Sumerians or Persians. Either way, Mesoamerica and Mesopotamia feel like really strong candidates.
I would love to see seldome seen mythologies such as the slavic pantheon which hasent gotten a single competent overview in gaming, The witcher touched on it but failed to fully delve into it because you arent delving into the Gods there.
I don't see many interesting or unique unita from Aztecas but would be interesting , im latino. Babilonia is great also hinduism but i doubt this last one since its a religion, same for japanese mythology great options

It's not like they were on par with Late Middle Age Europeans (or the Middle East or Asia) in military technology, and were still using stone weapons while Late Middle Age Europeans were running around in full metal plate and making use of gunpowder.

I'd love to see a Celtic pantheon! There are really interesting units that we could get from the Celts, unique architecture and map settings, and the myths are top teir.

Agree with you there. I‘d say either Celtic or Mayan/ Aztec Pantheon. Honestly, I wish the original didn’t have the Atlantic pantheon as it is basically Greece, not much of a difference there and instead have either Celtic, Mayan or Chinese Pantheon.
Yeah, I started to get annoyed reading about the premium packs etc, thinking 'here we go again - cutting content from the base game to charge more for premium...' . But then I see the base game's actual cost, and suddenly I don't mind it so much.

If they keep releasing new content, What if it becomes like Moba Balance where the new ones are always really OP in order to get people to buy them until they inevitably get nerfed. I am not sure how to feel about god packs, not because I wouldnt enjoy more stuff for existing pantehons, but because I am unsure what design space there still is. Like as a simple example for norse Thor does dwarves, Loki does oxcarts, odin does gatherers, what would a fourth god really do and how do you prevent overlap so we dont end up with lets say a new god that is essentially just odin+. Similarly greeks where you have poseidon - cav, zeus - infantry and hades - archer, what would a fourth one do? siege? If nothing else it will present the devs with an interesting design challenge to solve.
Well... They somehow managed to make different civs for AoE2DE and i think they can pull it off for AoMR. From 48 civs in AoE2DE they have probably 4 - 5 bad civs and all the rest are playable
You could also add a military path for norse and a economic one for greeks. Or defense buildings, unit upgrades. There are possibilities. But I think more overlap between civilisations.
While I agree with this worry, they have done an excellent job with new nations for Age of Empires II Definitive Edition and new mechanics. Maybe the norse god will have a unique unit and building or a style of play. I hope for the best. I think they have treated all Age of Empires Definitive Editions well with post content. I hope they do maybe Babylonian pantheon for expansion 2.
I really want this game to do well. :) I hope we get plenty of expansions after the first 2. Please give the Sumerians/Mesopotamians after the Chinese and the Aztec!

For the new pantheon they could go Aztec or Mayan like you said but there's of course a ton of them : Celt, Indian or even Slavic (used alot in Thea1 & 2 and really great) to name a few.
I doubt they would add the Indian pantheon - too many modern Hindus who would get upset. Pretty sure they got really mad whenever games like Smite tried to add in Indian/Vedic deities.

Honeslty AOM can and should act more like AOE, like they can periodically add new pantheons or expansions drawing tons of players for online multiplayer. Pheonicia, Persia, Roman Empire, India... there are a lot of pantheons that they can add but i know its way easier said than done..
Half of those pantheons can bring nothing because those civs have no mythology to speak of. What myth units would they get, pray tell? They would end up doing an Egypt or China all over again, where they just take random stuff and present it as a myth unit (white tiger, pethuchos, wadjet , anubite, terracotta warrior, war salamander - the list of made up myth units goes on and on and on). Really the only two civs that had a broad enough range of mythological creatures with specific abilities were the Greeks and the Norse. The former, frankly, had enough for two civs. No one else does.
India would be great for sure, Pheonicia, Persia, Rome, would probably be too similar to what we already have, I want to see them go further, we have the American civilizations, look at the Tupi mythology for example, it's really cool.
I’ve clocked thousands of hours just on the steam version of the game so £33 for the discounted premium version is so unbelievably cheap. I was expecting a AAA game price!
AND they included 25 localisations including my language🤤. Which is actually great, since the original has been oficially translated, see physical copies, but not on the steam version.
Oh no! Just as I was gonna go sleep. I guess it's gonna be another night staying up, this time having very deep thoughts and ideas for Finnic mythology for the retold. I'm confident we'll have Finnic pantheon for the game eventually, by no means will it be the first civs they'll add. But one day, and what that day comes, I will lift up a toast in honor of Ukko and rest of the old gods.
I'm so excited, this game was a big part of my childhood and teenage years! The possibilities are so many: Aztec/Maya pantheon, Babylonian pantheon, Yoruba pantheon, Japanese pantheon, Celtic pantheon, Hindu pantheon, Korean, jeez, even Roman if they manage to differentiate them from the greeks!
My guess for Expansion two is india, not because its necessarily the one people want to see the most (that would be atztecs), but because they would likely look for something that reaches players from a different market so SEA or india. I do not doubt that if the game is successful that we do get a Mezo pantheon eventually, I just think from a buiseness standpoint that one is going to be your biggest post release draw so you likely wanna save it for later on in the games live cycle, a bit like they ordered the expansions for aoe2 definitive edition, where they spaced out the european civilisaiton packs. Ultimately that is still a guess though, they might choose to go guns blazing and do atztecs or maya right after the chinese.
One issue with including Indian pantheon is that unlike religions/mythologies current faction are based of that are no longer active religions (yeah there are some neo-Pagans around but they are very much a niche thing), Hinduism is still being actively practised by nearly a billion people, which makes it much more touchy subject - for example I remember some Indian religious figure or organisation getting offended by Smite (mythology themed MOBA) including some Hindu gods or something some years back.

@@HidingAllTheWay I am aware of that situation, but depending on who is in chrage they might decide that all publicity is good publicity, the controversy did not harm smite success, it boosted its popularity and the same could be true for AoM, but again it really depends on who is in charge, it could really be anyone. India like Mesoamerica already have models in age of empries games so I would be surprised if we didnt get them.
If they add an extra Major God to each civ aside from Freyr to the Norse, I'm hoping they get Demeter for the Greeks, Amun for the Egyptians and Nyx for the Atlanteans!

They were different peoples with different languages lifestyles etc. Second off, its not as well documented or interesting as actually formed religious beliefs of well...civilised peoples. No, Actually the Name "Friday" comes from the wife of Odin= Frigg, Frigg is a godess synchronized in the interpretatio Romana as Venus. There is overlap between Freya and Frigg so its understandable that there is confusion. Also it *sounds* like it should by "Freyrs day" but that is not etymologically correct.

Such as Pluton and Hades (and in the roman times, Dis Pater, Orcus and Pluto) all becoming the same. Or the various Hercules figures. The trend is more towards unification than division. Do you have an example of a god "diverging" as you say?

Aztec is probably the most popular and unique option they can pick for the second expansion. Hopefully they keep making expansions for it like AoE2 so we can get a whole bunch more. Celtic/Irish, Sumerian, Slavic, Indian, Japanese... I even saw fan concepts for a Lovecraft pantheon which sounds cool as shit.
I think theres not a lot of space for lots of pantheons in AoMR due to how the game works unless they go more in an AoE2 direction which I don't think will happen.
For a microsecond I was worried you had to buy the premium version to get the Atlanteans alongside the base game. Thank God Expansion 1 will focus on the likely redesigned Chinese faction and Expansion 2 will actually give us smth new. I just hope it doesn't end there. If it is done with a good bit of polish, I wouldn't mind them releasing new pantheons over time to continue supporting the game.

I’m a little bit confused as to how buying the game will actually work. Am I correct in understanding that the two ways of buying it are to either A) get the Standard version, which has the base game, then get the Upgrade which gets all the extra content, or B) get the Premium version, which gives you everything all at once? Can you go into some further details on that aspect to help clear things up for me? As far as the brand new pantheon is concerned, I’m leaning towards the Aztecs. I only learned about the Aztecs mod yesterday, but it’s such an extensively researched and well-created mod that I think the official devs would be fools to not make that mod official content in the game. However, what I REALLY hope the Age Of Mythology devs will do is not stop after just these two new pantheons and continue to add new ones in later DLCs. If they do so, then I definitely want to see the Celtic and Japanese pantheons joining the roster. But what I would also really love to see is a “pantheon” centered around Arthurian Mythology. The three base/major/patron “deities” could be King Arthur, Merlin, and Morgan Le Fay, the minor gods could be various Round Table Knights, as well as figures like Nimue, Oberon, and Titania, they could gain favor by completing “quests” and defeating myth units, their own myth units could be various creatures and monsters from British, Scottish, and/or Welsh mythologies, and in a completely unique aspect, their minor gods (and maybe even their three major/patron gods) would be PLAYABLE as hero units in the game.

I do hope that each pantheon gets more minor god to pick. It I always hated how for the Norse you only had two picks for Mythic gods for Odin and Thor and got bored with them. I think it would be cool if for each age you can pick between three or even four minor gods so you can make some really cool late game builds.
This looks very good, though I am worried about adding new Major Gods to the existing pantheons. It will likely throw off balancing and lead to repeat Minor Gods picks, when the minor gods options are currently different for every Major God. Unless they add new Minors, but then that makes everything more complicated to balance.
Well the pantheons in smite where Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Chinese, Hindu, Babylonian, Mayan, Japanese, Celtic. So there are some possibilities that these would overlap and some characters are already popular in the other game. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, will it have LAN play?
Easy to shout out other mythologies to add but question is, what would their gameplay hook be? The modding community added Aztecs with sacrifices but for some ideas of my own. Romans: Train units in battalions, are slower but can build roads to massively boost military and trade speed. Heroes are batallions who get enough kills. Japanese: Favor is gained from building shrines and making offerings of other resources, heroes are Samurai that start with little armor and weaponry but updrade with age up.
Personal Opinion: In Age of Empires 3, they gave us the Aztec civilization, but they didn't give us an Aztec campaign set (like with Iroquois or Sioux). So it'd be nice if they made it up to us in Mythology Retold.

Wouldn't Melanesian or Micronesian ancient pantheons be more suited for the game than their much younger maori relative ? The maoris are a young culture, barely more than 900 years old, while mythologies from the original AoM are all at least 3500 years old. Other polynesians culture are much older, and possess "extincts pantheons", putting them in a similar position to AoM's present pantheons.
I promised myself not to fall for the preoder, but this is the one game I have been waiting for ever since AoE2 HD opened the door for aoe remasters . So against my better judgement I put 45 on black and bought a ticket for the hype train. LETS GO!
My hope is that they continue to make expansions for this game going forward. I know it's a bit greedy of me, but I'd LOVE to see Meso-American, Mesopotamian, Indian, Japanese, Slovak and Celtic pantheons added in the future.
My hope would be for expansion 2 to be Hindu. I think there is good potential for an interesting campaign and some fun myth units from a Hindu pantheon.
For China, I hope they keep close to the original. They had some good ideas. They just need to you know improve on it because let’s face it the campaign. The reason a lot of people hate that expansion. Also, I would like to see a Aztec/Mayans civilization or like a predecessor to that part of the world at least

For someone who just wants to play(again) the main campaign, maybe do a few 1vs1 with the computer and never play vs other players, is there any point to get the premium versions ? Will the expansion come with a new campaign ?
Actually it really isn't. Egyptian mythology goes back 4000-5000 years ago. Greek goes back about 2500 years ago. Norse only goes back 1000 years. Saying they're all the same era is like saying Ancient Greece and The Industrial Revolution are the same era. So they could choose absolutely any era
@Jimbobiscuit understand but you cannot compare Aztec mythology with them based on the simple fact that the entire Aztec civ did not reign more than 200 years while the Egyptian norse(scandanavia) and Greeks flourished for hell of a lot more, the least being norse. To each his own i guess but personally I find that mesopotamia and gremania/roman empire could be a way better and more interesting expansion. I mean the Aztec were from 1300ish to 1500ish that's not old or ancient and AOM is distinctive with its ancient civs, Aztec are a lot more fitting in the AoE games.
I wish the original game had Chinese instead of Atlantians as the Atlantians reminded me of the Greek, there’s not much of a difference in aesthetic and culture. Then two new expansions for Retold with Aztecs and Celts, thus having 6 very different cultures and creatures, maybe Hindu as a 7th.
Other pantheons would be great, but I think adding the Indian/Vedic pantheon would be a bad idea (cool as it would be). Too many people would take it as an insult.

Loved all the campang-based cutscenes, so excited to relive the story of Arkantos.

I am not sure how to feel about god packs, not because I wouldnt enjoy more stuff for existing pantehons, but because I am unsure what design space there still is.
Like as a simple example for norse Thor does dwarves, Loki does oxcarts, odin does gatherers, what would a fourth god really do and how do you prevent overlap so we dont end up with lets say a new god that is essentially just odin+. Similarly greeks where you have poseidon - cav, zeus - infantry and hades - archer, what would a fourth one do? siege?
If nothing else it will present the devs with an interesting design challenge to solve.

Well... They somehow managed to make different civs for AoE2DE and i think they can pull it off for AoMR. From 48 civs in AoE2DE they have probably 4 - 5 bad civs and all the rest are playable
You could also add a military path for norse and a economic one for greeks.
Or defense buildings, unit upgrades. There are possibilities. But I think more overlap between civilisations.
While I agree with this worry, they have done an excellent job with new nations for Age of Empires II Definitive Edition and new mechanics. Maybe the norse god will have a unique unit and building or a style of play. I hope for the best. I think they have treated all Age of Empires Definitive Editions well with post content. I hope they do maybe Babylonian pantheon for expansion 2.

@@TheMrYadrian I just don't want the Chinese expansion, so for me it does not matter they changed the fraction. I only want more from the existing universe of Egypt, Greek and Norse mythology.
For the new pantheon they could go Aztec or Mayan like you said but there's of course a ton of them : Celt, Indian or even Slavic (used alot in Thea1 & 2 and really great) to name a few.
Don't forget babylonians or other middle eastern cultures. They'd be great too.
I doubt they would add the Indian pantheon - too many modern Hindus who would get upset. Pretty sure they got really mad whenever games like Smite tried to add in Indian/Vedic deities.

Honeslty AOM can and should act more like AOE, like they can periodically add new pantheons or expansions drawing tons of players for online multiplayer. Pheonicia, Persia, Roman Empire, India... there are a lot of pantheons that they can add but i know its way easier said than done..
And possible new campaigns, too.

Half of those pantheons can bring nothing because those civs have no mythology to speak of. What myth units would they get, pray tell? They would end up doing an Egypt or China all over again, where they just take random stuff and present it as a myth unit (white tiger, pethuchos, wadjet , anubite, terracotta warrior, war salamander - the list of made up myth units goes on and on and on).
Really the only two civs that had a broad enough range of mythological creatures with specific abilities were the Greeks and the Norse. The former, frankly, had enough for two civs. No one else does.
India would be great for sure, Pheonicia, Persia, Rome, would probably be too similar to what we already have, I want to see them go further, we have the American civilizations, look at the Tupi mythology for example, it's really cool.

I’ve clocked thousands of hours just on the steam version of the game so £33 for the discounted premium version is so unbelievably cheap. I was expecting a AAA game price!
AND they included 25 localisations including my language🤤. Which is actually great, since the original has been oficially translated, see physical copies, but not on the steam version.

Oh no! Just as I was gonna go sleep. I guess it's gonna be another night staying up, this time having very deep thoughts and ideas for Finnic mythology for the retold. I'm confident we'll have Finnic pantheon for the game eventually, by no means will it be the first civs they'll add. But one day, and what that day comes, I will lift up a toast in honor of Ukko and rest of the old gods.

I'm so excited, this game was a big part of my childhood and teenage years! The possibilities are so many: Aztec/Maya pantheon, Babylonian pantheon, Yoruba pantheon, Japanese pantheon, Celtic pantheon, Hindu pantheon, Korean, jeez, even Roman if they manage to differentiate them from the greeks!
My guess for Expansion two is india, not because its necessarily the one people want to see the most (that would be atztecs),
but because they would likely look for something that reaches players from a different market so SEA or india.
I do not doubt that if the game is successful that we do get a Mezo pantheon eventually,
I just think from a buiseness standpoint that one is going to be your biggest post release draw so you likely wanna save it for later on in the games live cycle,
a bit like they ordered the expansions for aoe2 definitive edition, where they spaced out the european civilisaiton packs.
Ultimately that is still a guess though, they might choose to go guns blazing and do atztecs or maya right after the chinese.
One issue with including Indian pantheon is that unlike religions/mythologies current faction are based of that are no longer active religions (yeah there are some neo-Pagans around but they are very much a niche thing), Hinduism is still being actively practised by nearly a billion people, which makes it much more touchy subject - for example I remember some Indian religious figure or organisation getting offended by Smite (mythology themed MOBA) including some Hindu gods or something some years back.

@@HidingAllTheWay I am aware of that situation, but depending on who is in chrage they might decide that all publicity is good publicity, the controversy did not harm smite success, it boosted its popularity and the same could be true for AoM, but again it really depends on who is in charge, it could really be anyone. India like Mesoamerica already have models in age of empries games so I would be surprised if we didnt get them.

No, Actually the Name "Friday" comes from the wife of Odin= Frigg, Frigg is a godess synchronized in the interpretatio Romana as Venus. There is overlap between Freya and Frigg so its understandable that there is confusion. Also it *sounds* like it should by "Freyrs day" but that is not etymologically correct.

@@brunopereira6789 its possible but not likely. usually what we see is different local gods merging into one figure when a culture becomes dominant. Such as Pluton and Hades (and in the roman times, Dis Pater, Orcus and Pluto) all becoming the same. Or the various Hercules figures. The trend is more towards unification than division. Do you have an example of a god "diverging" as you say?
@@brunopereira6789 I think its much more likely that Frigg and Freya Merged rather than diverged. Or rather, Freya took on roles and attributes previously attributed to Frigg as her cult and worship was superseded by a more popular Freya worship.

The new gods and pantheons are the thing I'm most excited about. This game has do much potential for new content.
Aztec is probably the most popular and unique option they can pick for the second expansion. Hopefully they keep making expansions for it like AoE2 so we can get a whole bunch more. Celtic/Irish, Sumerian, Slavic, Indian, Japanese... I even saw fan concepts for a Lovecraft pantheon which sounds cool as shit.
I think theres not a lot of space for lots of pantheons in AoMR due to how the game works unless they go more in an AoE2 direction which I don't think will happen.

Thank God Expansion 1 will focus on the likely redesigned Chinese faction and Expansion 2 will actually give us smth new.

I'd love to see mesoamerican, indian, celtic, mesopotamian and turkic mythologies at some point, dreamt of them being in the game growing up, and that abandoned dream was rekindled by the announcement of retold
I’m a little bit confused as to how buying the game will actually work. Am I correct in understanding that the two ways of buying it are to either A) get the Standard version, which has the base game, then get the Upgrade which gets all the extra content, or B) get the Premium version, which gives you everything all at once? Can you go into some further details on that aspect to help clear things up for me?
As far as the brand new pantheon is concerned, I’m leaning towards the Aztecs. I only learned about the Aztecs mod yesterday, but it’s such an extensively researched and well-created mod that I think the official devs would be fools to not make that mod official content in the game. However, what I REALLY hope the Age Of Mythology devs will do is not stop after just these two new pantheons and continue to add new ones in later DLCs. If they do so, then I definitely want to see the Celtic and Japanese pantheons joining the roster. But what I would also really love to see is a “pantheon” centered around Arthurian Mythology. The three base/major/patron “deities” could be King Arthur, Merlin, and Morgan Le Fay, the minor gods could be various Round Table Knights, as well as figures like Nimue, Oberon, and Titania, they could gain favor by completing “quests” and defeating myth units, their own myth units could be various creatures and monsters from British, Scottish, and/or Welsh mythologies, and in a completely unique aspect, their minor gods (and maybe even their three major/patron gods) would be PLAYABLE as hero units in the game.

I do hope that each pantheon gets more minor god to pick. It I always hated how for the Norse you only had two picks for Mythic gods for Odin and Thor and got bored with them. I think it would be cool if for each age you can pick between three or even four minor gods so you can make some really cool late game builds.
This looks very good, though I am worried about adding new Major Gods to the existing pantheons. It will likely throw off balancing and lead to repeat Minor Gods picks, when the minor gods options are currently different for every Major God. Unless they add new Minors, but then that makes everything more complicated to balance.
Well the pantheons in smite where Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Chinese, Hindu, Babylonian, Mayan, Japanese, Celtic. So there are some possibilities that these would overlap and some characters are already popular in the other game. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, will it have LAN play?
Easy to shout out other mythologies to add but question is, what would their gameplay hook be?
The modding community added Aztecs with sacrifices but for some ideas of my own.
Romans: Train units in battalions, are slower but can build roads to massively boost military and trade speed. Heroes are batallions who get enough kills.
Japanese: Favor is gained from building shrines and making offerings of other resources, heroes are Samurai that start with little armor and weaponry but updrade with age up.
Personal Opinion: In Age of Empires 3, they gave us the Aztec civilization, but they didn't give us an Aztec campaign set (like with Iroquois or Sioux). So it'd be nice if they made it up to us in Mythology Retold.

The maoris are a young culture, barely more than 900 years old, while mythologies from the original AoM are all at least 3500 years old. Other polynesians culture are much older, and possess "extincts pantheons", putting them in a similar position to AoM's present pantheons.

Yeah, I feel it'd fit their naming convention more if they write Frey, as they mostly don't write Heimdallr or Njordr etc in AoM.
My hope would be for expansion 2 to be Hindu. I think there is good potential for an interesting campaign and some fun myth units from a Hindu pantheon.

From what I read yes. They overhauled their powers system to be on Couldowns instead.

Actually it really isn't. Egyptian mythology goes back 4000-5000 years ago. Greek goes back about 2500 years ago. Norse only goes back 1000 years.
Saying they're all the same era is like saying Ancient Greece and The Industrial Revolution are the same era.
So they could choose absolutely any era

@Jimbobiscuit understand but you cannot compare Aztec mythology with them based on the simple fact that the entire Aztec civ did not reign more than 200 years while the Egyptian norse(scandanavia) and Greeks flourished for hell of a lot more, the least being norse. To each his own i guess but personally I find that mesopotamia and gremania/roman empire could be a way better and more interesting expansion. I mean the Aztec were from 1300ish to 1500ish that's not old or ancient and AOM is distinctive with its ancient civs, Aztec are a lot more fitting in the AoE games.

I wish the original game had Chinese instead of Atlantians as the Atlantians reminded me of the Greek, there’s not much of a difference in aesthetic and culture. Then two new expansions for Retold with Aztecs and Celts, thus having 6 very different cultures and creatures, maybe Hindu as a 7th.
