Nolan could write and direct a movie about the layout of grocery stores and I’d still be there day one. When it comes to him doing an adaptation of The Odyssey, there’s a lot of room for a phenomenal film to be delivered. And even if it’s not a home run of a Nolan film, it’ll be extraordinary interesting. Regardless, this is already one of my most anticipated films of 2026 right now.
Nolan’s movies can be long, overrated, pretentious, and boring but okay. Scorsese >>>> Nolan. Goodfellas and Casino are better than any movie Nolan ever made. Nolan’s movies are not highly rewatchable. I enjoyed Oppenheimer but that movie is overhyping him again. Tarantino has more replayable movies than Nolan. Tarantino can rip off other movies and directors including Scorsese but his movies have flavor and rewatchable factor. Never rewatched Inception ever again. My favs from Nolan are TDK, Memento, and The Prestige. No interest rewatching his other 10 films.
I love how Tenet foreshadowed Nolan’s next film with the Oppenheimer bomb, and how the Prometheus reference in Oppenheimer hinted at his now next project, drawing on mythology in The Odyssey.
"American Prometheus: " was also the title of the book Oppenheimer was adapted from which is neat and fits in well with Nolan transitioning to historical epics!!!
Imagine being such a good filmmaker that you decide for your next film that you’re going to adapt the Odyssey… damn, Nolan’s got the biggest balls in Hollywood! Was not expecting this but the more I think about it the more excited I am, has the potential to be absolutely incredible
This is going to be special. I like how Universal Pics is describing the film: “a mythic action epic shot across the world.” Love that he’s adapting this classic heroic tale - its themes have certainly influenced many of the most popular fantasy fiction series of today - like “The Lord of the Rings” and “Harry Potter.”
I saw Interstellar in IMAX few days ago, for its 10th anniversary, and after I was blown away I thought to myself how cool it would be for him to create another film in a similar fashion. And before you know it, after his “space odyssey” we are now getting his “earth odyssey”. In my opinion Interstellar is by far the best film he has ever made, and it would be amazing if he can produce that type of atmosphere again.
Not exactly. I mean, if by "the book" you mean American Prometheus, it was not actually suggested by Pattinson. Pattinson handed him a book collecting some Oppenheimer's public discourses. Nolan got passionate about the story, and some producer (I do not remember his name, but Nolan mentioned him in some interviews) gave him American Prometheus.
Nolan coming out here with an early Christmas gift 🔥 def gonna be one of my most anticipated films of whatever year it comes out. I’m particularly very excited because I’ve not only read The Odyssey, its a big influence on One Piece, and so I wanna see Nolan capture that grand sense of adventure I get not just from the book but also from One Piece seeing as how it’s so grand and big in scope, and how it influenced one of my all time favorite works of fiction 🔥 very much pumped for this
He reminds me of Ridley Scott. Both guys do sci-fi and historical epics. I agree that I’m excited about the direction Nolan wants to go. I just hope Nolan can work on his sound mixing more, especially if they’re touching on history. I personally found Oppenheimer hard to follow, because the sound mixing threw me off on top of tackling complex subjects.
I know it's usually not your style, but there is an Odyssey adaptational musical named "Epic: The Musical". Most of the songs are on Spotify with the final saga being released tomorrow actually. Words can't describe how good these songs are and would highly recommend them to you if you have some time to spare. With this announcement, I believe this musical will become even bigger than it is now in the coming years.
@@kh7688Nolan loves the Fast and Furious franchise. Tbh Gladiator 2 wasn't that bad. The problem is that Ridley Scott is an asshole who doesn't respect history.
i’d say inception dark knight rises interstellar - coz while rises is like a 7 out of 10 and dark knight is easily a 9, interstellar is such a masterpiece not to be included and is probably the only film that i ever gave a 10. Plus prestige just wasn’t for me but maybe i just wasn’t in the right mood while watching it coz i thought it was roughly around (maybe even slightly worse) dark knight rises level.

Wait, this is so exciting! I just read the Odyssey this year for school! As I was reading, I was saying to myself that this would make an awesome movie
I hope it's similar to Jason and The Argonauts, at least in the creature effects department, it's crazy that no one has tried to innovate on what Ray Harryhausen did instead they just skipped straight to CGI
Phil Tippett took stop motion to its technical limits decades ago, with his "go motion" technique. The added motion blur makes it look more "natural" than traditional stop motion, but good CGI looks much more believable.
"Were Christopher Nolan to direct this, it would transcend being merely an adaptation of The Odyssey and become a uniquely 'Nolanian' interpretation. Nolan's masterful filmmaking would undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on the project." 📽️
Nolan's like my favourite director but this is the first time in forever I've been excited for his next move off the premise alone, I've been hoping he'd do something like this, can't wait. If it works out I hope it leads to a resurgence in medieval epics like the first Gladiator did, and the fact he's adapting not a novel but an epic poem! Doesn't get more classic than that
I love how Nolan subtly foreshadows his next movie with hints and elements here and there. Tenet mentioned the atomic bomb and J Robert Oppenheimer, which led to Oppenheimer, which itself is based on American Prometheus, which of course has mythological roots. Before the announcement, I thought Nolan was going to do a Fyodor Dostoevsky movie (like notes from the underground or crime and punishment), but him doing an adaptation of The Odyssey is gonna be epic.
I can totally see this film starting a new phase of ancient historical epics or epic mythology stories replacing superhero movies that have been dying out the past couple years. Dune was a nice segway into it as it’s a science fiction film that takes a lot of influence from historical epics like Lawrence of Arabia but this is gonna blow peoples socks off, I can’t think of a more epic idea than Christopher Nolan doing perhaps the most iconic and famous epic in literature, there’s already a Cleopatra film in the works that Denis Villeneuve will direct, im expecting a Dark Knight level shift in the culture, if there’s one filmmaker than can shift the culture into a new phase it’s Nolan. We’ve also never really seen a Greek mythology film done actually right so if not ancient historical epics I can definitely see superheroes being replaced with Greek gods
Hope Nolan has been working with Professor Dr. Emily Wilson, the British-American classicist, author, Professor and Chair of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, who has recently published a translation of “The Odyssey” and has a deep knowledge and understanding of the poem and what it’s really about (her interviews and videos on “The Odyssey” are enlightening - that the poem is really about what it means to come home and what a homecoming is about and how it effects other relationships). Hope Nolan has been consulting with her and that she’s part of the production.(like Kip Thorne was for Nolan on Interstellar).
I’ve never been one to go to the theater because of how expensive it is, but all of Nolan’s films are so good and include alot of my favorites, my seat is already booked!
The book is actually written in a really interesting way where the story jumps both perspectives and back and forth from current action and past events, so I feel he has a great backdrop to play off for what you say
