Thanks so much for uploading this video 🙏🏽. I am a video editor and specD mine out the same as you 🙌🏽. I was considering the 2TB storage. But online storage is cheap and secure that it felt pointless to spend the extra money when I would be sending files to the cloud anyways. I was curious when you said you could use Adobe Premier with the "Radeon Pro 5700 XT with 16GB of GDDR6 memory". Is there any configuration you need to do to get the benefits??? Or did you just mean that it works better with Adobe Premier?
What ? No anti static ? Somebodies just asking for trouble , or am I missing something . Also , to my knowledge , the imac 2020 27" does not have upgradeable ssd , so I'm stuck with 256GB , a noob mistake dealing with the Apple Mafia !
Hello A. J awesome vid, I recently upgraded my iMac 2020 RAM to 64 GB 2667 MHz DDR4. However, for some reason, my Imac is now consuming 13.75 GB without doing anything. Is that normal? I checked the process and memory and did not see any anomalies. if you can answer this question I would really appreciate it.
I use a green screen & render 1080P. In this scenario do you think I should upgrade beyond the base graphics card? Would doing so increase performance w/ what I’m doing?
I’m a huge fan of getting more than you think you need, so I’d 100% upgrade the graphics card if you can. But the standard graphics card will definitely do the trick as long as you have enough memory. ✌🏽
ATTENTION TO DETAIL for all doing a first time upgrade... be sure to remove labels from new ram AND make sure slots are WELL lit to see proper alignment of notch... attention to detail is a must!
Great video, thank you! And what about the SSD? Do you think that is better buy the iMac with the lower SSD capacity and then change it for a better one?
Thanks! That depends on what you’re doing with the machine. I tend to buy larger SSD’s so I can edit projects before transferring to external storage for archiving.
@@ajwilliamsmedia I say this because maybe 512GB SSD storage will be not enough… and maybe just buy apart a 2T ssd will be cheaper. But I don’t know if the iMacs on the Apple store right now will able to change hard drive 🤔🤔
A lot of people are getting a lower capacity SSD for that reason. Smaller hard drives don’t work with my workflow (personally). Even when I’m editing off of an external SSD, I tend to run out of disk space due to cache and common files.
Hi A.J. Just discovered your awesome channel. Thanks sooo much for this video. Question: for Premiere Pro, After Effects, 4K... do you think the 1 TB SSD is good or should I splurge and get the 2 TB? Which one did you get? Waste of time transferring files. Thanks in advance. 😉
Thanks for the kind words! If you’re a heavy Premiere Pro and After Effects user, you’ll be going into the system library to delete cache files very frequently if you stick to the 512GB ssd. It’s doable though. I chose to upgrade because I find it pretty annoying.
I would put the biggest sizes in the slots where the 8GB sticks are and put the 8GB sticks in the other slots. I would try to avoid mixing sizes if possible though.
A. J. Williams Media so then Should I just remove the two existing for megs of RAM sticks and just put in my two sticks of 16 gigs of RAM each for a total of 32 mags
Lots of tech TH-cam channels tested it. It seems that due to heat throttling, the i9 doesn’t do quite as well for long durations. It does outperform the i7 in shorter bursts though. So the one you get should be based around how you use your machine.
There are 4 slots, but using unmatched ram can cause issues. One person commented on this video that the iMac wouldn’t boot when they tried to leave in the original ram. It’s not a new problem though. Funny thing is, sometimes you can use unmatched ram without an issue. It’s just best practice to not.
I bought 128GB of Samsung RAM for what Apple wanted for 32. When I put mine in I didn't think it was working. When I pushed the power button and nothing happened. I thought it wasn't seated, so I took it out and put it back in and nothing. I put the original RAM back in, NOTHING. So I put all 4 32 GB sticks back in and tried it again. NOTHING. So I walked out of the room to get my ipad to maybe google the problem and when I came back in it was on the login screen. I think it must take a couple of minutes for the computer to recognize the new RAM?
I put the $400 I saved on the i9 and put it into more storage. I got 2TB of storage. I clicked your link. I got the same RAM you did. If you read the reviews some have had issues with the OWC RAM while the Samsung is rated higher and the price is a little lower too. I only got the 8GB Video Ram. I don't do videos but I do still images.
Great points. I haven’t had any issues with the OWC ram so far. Install was easy (shown in the video. Haha!) But I’m all about saving money. Super weird about your booting issue though. That didn’t happen with my ram install.
Yes, first boot is the one when it is forced to 'long-boot' - in the back-ground BIOS (however it is called in Apple case) is recalculating RAM and checking it. Then saves changes, and then it is switch back to quick-boot. This also applies to my laptop (lenovo P51) it took fair amount of time to boot first time with 64GB, but then it is as quick as usual.
Thanks! The 8GB will be fine for most situations. I got it because I work with after effects while running premiere at the same time while also having chrome open. Don’t be surprised if you run into situations where you have to use proxies though.
You can, but it might not be best for performance. I’d rather have 64 GB ram that I know perform well than 52GB that don’t or that I’m questioning. Great question! Thanks for watching.
I left my 2 4gb cards and added an additional 2 8gb cards ( 24gb ) The original ram comes in position 2 and 4. You have to move those to 1 and 2 and put the additional in 3 and 4 which maintains 2666. If you don’t the speed drops to 2100 for some reason.
Would the same instructions apply for the Samsung 16gb? And, the amazon link mentions this for laptops. I assume it applies to desktops too. I am a professional photographer about to invest in the 2020 iMac.
Yes! It’s the same instructions for any ram that is compatible. The ram in the link is the exact kind that I purchased, so yes, it applies to desktops too. 🙏🏽
I’ve worked on some beast machines before, and this one stands up with all of them. Smooth 4k editing (even 4k 60fps h.265 drone footage) as long as there isn’t too much effects. But when there is a lot of effects, taking the render scale down to 1/2 or 1/4 usually fixes it. I’ve been very happy with it so far. I’m interested to see how the new M1 compares though.
AE seems to be great as well, I haven’t done any major animation projects with it, but if you watch my video, “how to replace sky in video” you’ll see how smooth it is with graded 4k h.265 drone footage with some simple animation and keying.
I have “magic hands” so I can’t use the Magic Mouse 😂😂😂 But really, I get phantom presses and weird glitches that interrupt my work flow. It’s pretty annoying!
RAM doesn’t need to be backed up. Just make sure that you power down the computer and leave it unplugged from power for about 5 minutes before taking the old RAM out. ✌🏽
Hey! Thanks for this! Question though.. since you customized the ssd, how long do you have to wait for Apple to ship it to you? As opposed to buying what the standard three levels imacs that they offer? Thank you!
Thank you for the prompt response! The reason I was asking because when I tried to make the order, Apple estimated 2-3 weeks. I plan to get the imac for me and the kiddos who have to do remote learning, so I was hoping to get it sooner! Thanks again! Will subscribe!
Adrian Hendarta It estimated 2-3 weeks for me too. I was surprised when it shipped the next day! It shipped from Shanghai but still got here in about 5 days.
Pretty grateful I found your channel, your gear is everything I can’t live with out ! So grateful that you picked those specific items 💯 is there anything that you would spec for future proof or want to change? What’s your thoughts on Apple nano glass
I feel like this will last at least 5 years without feeling like I need to upgrade. I didn’t get the nano glass because I edit in a pretty dark room, so reflections aren’t bad.
Same problem for me. I’ve been waiting for it to turn on for a half hour with the new RAM mixed with the old RAM. Going to try to pull out the iMac Ram and see if they work
Full specs to my iMac (before upgrading ram):
• Standard glass
• 3.8GHz 8-core 10th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz
• 8GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory
• Radeon Pro 5700 XT with 16GB of GDDR6 memory
• 1TB SSD storage
• 10 Gigabit Ethernet
• Magic Trackpad 2
• Magic Keyboard - US English
Sweet. Ty A.J...
No problem!

The only thing that changed is that I now have 64GB ram.

Definitely not normal. Google chrome can sometimes eat up memory. So maybe look at what might be using it?
Can you add more ram down the road? or is that not a good idea?
Yes! You absolutely can. Just be sure to get the exact same kind if you’re adding to the other slots.
Beautiful job A.J. you just answered all my questions, I really enjoyed watching this video.. impressive work.. thank you..

Definitely. This was a huge upgrade when I got it. I have this machine and a 2023 MacPro now and use them both to edit.

Hey! I got the graphics card from Apple pre-installed. I just upgraded it on the website.
@@ajwilliamsmedia thank you.

I don’t recommend upgrading the graphics card yourself.

if I purchase two sticks of 16 gigs of RAM and want to keep my existing eight gigs of RAM what would be the order that I put the sticks in the sloth
I would put the biggest sizes in the slots where the 8GB sticks are and put the 8GB sticks in the other slots. I would try to avoid mixing sizes if possible though.
A. J. Williams Media currently i have 2 sticks of 4 meg of ram that came with the imac, i purchased 2 sticks of 16 gig
Awesome! I say try it. But I’ve had spotty luck mixing ram sizes.
A. J. Williams Media so then Should I just remove the two existing for megs of RAM sticks and just put in my two sticks of 16 gigs of RAM each for a total of 32 mags
Yep. I’d put the bigger sticks in the first two slots and the smaller ones in 3 and 4.

Yep. That’s the exact kind that I bought for mine.
I noticed you took out the original 8gb or ram even though there are 4 slots. Is it an issue to leave those and add the two 32gb?
Yes. Old goes out. Save.
