Personally, I prefer to draw things in relationship to the current axis, group them, then rotate and position it to where I need it to be. Most times it's easier to draw this way as you can use the current axis for reference (instead of using the rotate rectangle tool, for instance), and you don't have to go through the axis realignment when you're done. I'm confused about the differentiation between component axis and group axis. Can't you do the same procedure you demonstrated with the group to a component? (Enter the component, then realign axis from within?)
When I double click to edit the group, I get the dotted line and everything else goes dull, but the red, green and blue axis lines do not appear!? So I can't then right click on anything..
I hope this will save me. I'm actually trying to create a model of the Galaxy (Yes, I know. I'm _boldly going_ anyway...) and I need to set the _actual_ World Axis according to an angle which is completely different than any other reference point in the model. The pieces and parts are rotatable so I need to be able to rotate the Earth around the Sun and have the axis remain lined up to Polaris and create the Seasons. I strongly suspect that this still may not work, tho.
Lock Ree Tyson drew a profile using the Pen tool, then selected the top face and used the Follow Me tool to duplicate the profile of the face along the path. This video goes into more detail on how to use the Follow Me tool. Check it out! th-cam.com/video/oX6bn0Q0pIM/w-d-xo.html

Wow this is going to be very helpful! Thanks for sharing. Seems like there is always something new to learn in Sketchup. Love it
Very informative, didn't even know about the rotated rectangle too.
Adam Stevenson There are a lot of hidden tricks with the rotated rectangle tool. Very flexible tool mastersketchup.com/rotated-rectangle/
Actually, it was your extrude action in one hit that had me gasping,, never realised I could do that!
Thank you very much ❤
