Jan, I’ve searched many videos and tutorials and tried several different mask types. Yours is hands down the best I’ve found. I’m actually having fun making masks. Thank you so much for your clear instructions. I especially appreciate the precise pleat measurements as I didn’t like my eyeballing them.

@Reid Harvey thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Thank you so much for this. Your instructions were the clearest that I came across. I wasted fabric trying to make 4 before I found this. Your video is the only one to clearly show how to do the pleats in a way that made sense to me. And the use of t-shirts is the life saver I needed.
Brilliant! I've been searching for elastic... My mom passed away in December and I'm still working at clearing out her clothing. She had so many tank tops, that I will now be using. them for my masks. Feels good to put some of her things to such a good use. Thank you for the idea!
I have watched dozens of TH-cam videos for making medical masks and yours is the BEST one. Thank you so much. I'm glad you shifted the filter to the top of the mask. I love the ties made from T-shirts. One T-shirt makes a lot of ties. Recipients can also cut the ties to make ear loops. I'm. delivering some masks to a local nursing home today. Thanks again! Stay safe and healthy.
I have watched so many videos for these masks and this one is by far the clearest and best I have seen, plus upcycling a t-shirt is brilliant. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this. My husband needs several masks by Monday, so I'm off to get sewing!
@Kaptain Kid if you had actually watched the video, the t-shirt fabric is only used for the ties (for those of us who can't get elastic). The actual mask is 100% cotton broadcloth.
That was FANTASTIC to have this video and the option to make a mask without elastic! Wow! So timely! I was panicking because I couldn't find elastic in the stores.

I am so impressed with this tutorial because it lets us use just what we have to get the protection needed. That is what old folks called "Makin' do'. I also like that one who is struggling with pain in hands does not have to make bias or strip ties, but just cut up some clean undershirts et al for the ties. You're a genius..
Never heard of her before (or any of these DIYers for that matter) the Covid-19 virus, however, I've seen a few DIY mask tutorials now, and I like hers the best for it's simplicity. Especially for a guy who has 10 thumbs when it comes to sewing. She also has a nice, upbeat personality, which we can use in these times.
This is the easiest to follow tutorial I have seen. Thank you for taking the time to help non-sewers like myself get through this. Other videos made me want to cry or rage.
Excellent video, thank you so much. You covered every small detail, which is good for me, returning to sewing after 40 years to sew masks for my RN daughter and her co-workers and friends.
Thank you so, so much. Not for the mask tutorial as such, but for reminding me! Floral ties! I turned my entire house upside down looking for any kind of wire to fashion a makeshift nose-clip out of, and it never occured to me...I have binding wire for the garden! Holy friggin hell, ma'am, consider yourself smooched on both cheeks from all the way across the pond! Thank you so much!
I worked on this today. I loved the idea of using the tee shirt pieces for the straps. I thought overall this pattern worked very well. I probably wouldn't recommend for someone with limited experience in sewing. There is a time when you have to sew inside the pocket which could be challenging for someone with limited experience. Thanks for sharing this Jan! I plan on making more to give.
Thanks Jan - my daughter's an ER nurse in Virginia and said soft ties like yours are so much more comfortable for wearing than the elastic anyway -also can be adjusted for different head sizes better. Great video - I'm going to start making these now.
This is my favorite mask tutorial! I am a terrible seamstress, very out of practice and this was so easy to follow and I think the smartest way to incorporate the filter pocket. Thank you!
This was a great tutorial and had all the features I wanted: fabric ties, nose clip, pocket for filter. I got out my 40 year old Kenmore machine and, while it took some time for this first one, felt I had all the info I needed to get this done fairly quickly . I personally ended up hand stitching to reinforce the pleats/folds.
This fits great and much better than one I tried that has two front pieces seamed down the middle for your nose. I used t-shirts too for ties, just didn't know that if you cut them vertically it rolls the other way! Cool! Pulling them is a great idea, more for each t-shirt! I have two suggestions: see if you have any speaker wire for the nose wire. It is very sturdy copper wire encased in plastic and will hold up. The kind I have holds its shape too. Also I had a little gapping at the chin. Sewed two rows of large stitches, then pulled the top threads on each end to shirr it in. When it was right. I did a regular row of stitching between them.
Over the past few days, I have watched numerous mask-making videos, and yours is the clearest and most clever presentation yet. Thank you, I am now motivated to make some. Best wishes.
Love this pattern. Added a little dart in the center at the bottom. It really helps to eliminate any gaps. (1/4" depth at the peak of the dart. 3/4" length).

everything I was looking for- I liked the design of the rectangular masks but wanted to add a pocket, also ran out of elastic and these t-shirt strips are the PERFECT solution! A friend who works in fashion recommended cutting the t shirts diagonally because the "yarn orientation" makes it stronger. Not sure what that means but I trust her! Thanks for the awesome tutorial.
Thanks for this video. Seen lots, tried a few, and this is the quickest and most simple. I use coated plant-ties for the nose wire and sew it in before I pleat it. I use the zipper foot to get close to the wire. All my materials are washed at 60c before sewing. No orders yet, just for friends.
Thanks so much Jan for your easy to understand instructions for making masks! For the moment I have no iron so I’m going to do most of the steps and borrow a friend’s iron and finish up my 4 masks. The tee shirt trick is pure genius!! Thx again!
This is the most comfortable mask I have made. The others I have made have not fit very well and feel bulky. I LOVE the nose fitting. Instructions are really clear and easy to follow. thank you so much, this will be my "go-to" for my next batch!
Thank you!! I made a few other mask designs last night that turned out ok, but these were perfect! I've only sewed two other times in my life (the last two Halloweens), so if I can do it, anyone can :) I found some stiff wire that I used for the nose piece, but I was afraid it would be too uncomfortable so I cut off the bottom of a shirt with a hem and fed the wire thru to give it a little more padding. I'm very appreciative of your easy to follow video.
Haha I got into trouble recently. Some guy was making and advertising them and landed on my page through a mutual friend. I commented that she should tell him to bloody IRON his seams. That is first chapter in Sewing 101. Turned out he was a "theatrical costumier/milliner" of some 35 years. And yet he does not iron a simple seam. But I am so with you on that. If you make wear once and toss away, all good. But for reuse and being in public? If you do something, you may as well do it well. Takes a lot less time if you cut out 10, sew same seam on all, iron all at the same time etc.
Your mask is definately the best fitting one! Since the covid19 I have tried several pattern but yours has everything! The ties are fun to make and it keeps the mask in place very well! And it is adjustable! For a man I would make it 9inches instead of 8! Thank you very much!!
Great mask, great use of materials - the elastic loops from a Tshirt is great. I made a template of paper 7" wide, with lines going all across at the pleat markings - ie from the top, 1.25", second line 1" down from the first line, third line 1/2" down from the second line, etc. Now I just put the paper on the mask, line up the top edges, and easily mark the lines on both sides of the mask without having to measure every time. Bless you for figuring out the measurements, this is what was preventing me from making pleated masks = couldn't figure out the pleats!!!
Using a T-shirt to create the ties was such a smart idea! It normally takes forever to sew meters of neat tie straps. Now it can be done in seconds! Thanks for the idea!
Donna Gilbert I tried the shoe laces yesterday. Hated how they have no stretch or give. Hate how tying them caught my shirt very curly hair and caused pain. T-shirt is excellent because it won’t break down in the hot dryer like elastic would. It would also work well for over the ear mask designs and other no tie versions.
THANK YOU! I'm so tired of making the strips from fabric as it is so time consuming. The T-Shirt idea is wonderful! Also, love the measurements for the pleats! 👍👍👍👍
I started usung T-shirt as ties a week ago as I couldnt find elastic, Grabbed onlder white T-shirts that my husband was throwing out. Got about 13 masks from 1 T'shirt.
TAWN no. You can actually buy t-shirt balls of yarn now at craft stores- it’s easy and fun to use and is very durable. T-shirt yarn holds up incredibly well and does not break down in hot dryer heat as elastic does over time.
Thanks so much for this video! I have been unable to find much elastic or substitutes, and your T-shirt solution is brilliant and accessible to almost anyone.
Thank you for putting this up. I bought a Brother CS6000i a few months ago to use to mend my work clothes. I'm a guy, I never learned sewing, but your instructions really helped while I started learning my machine. I had a little trouble getting my machine to climb the pleats, I read later that the zigzag foot has a button that inhibits pivoting. Maybe that will help with the next one. You didn't seem to be having any problems. Since I'm a guy, I skipped a pleat as I was worried it would be too small. It worked out. For the nose piece I used pieces of some AR15 gas tube pipe cleaners. The tee shirt substitute is genius. I just wish I could have found a Fiskar rotary knife. At least I have a pair of decent scissors. All the sewing shops are closed in my state due to the governors orders. I'm thinking that they are essential at the moment. Thanks again.
Thank you, very good tutorial. I do mine pretty much the same, however, I don’t completely enclose the nose clip. I just make a seam about 5 inches across. This way if I want to replace the twist tie if it starts rusting, or breaks, then you can still replace it with ease without undoing the seams. You can go through the inside of the pocket to do that. Otherwise, same mask. Good job, thank you.
Thanks so much for this... appreciate your simple directions! Other comments are appreciated and got few other ideas. (dart at bottom, I'll try. And moms old shirts -helpful... Becky's moms contribution) Spent 30 minutes looking for elastic, in case I'd need it, and think the old tees I have for another project will be best, Thank you! gonna get sewing.
I was about to give up because all the other videos were either too complex or the items are unavailable. Thank you! I will be making masks tomorrow ❤️✌🏻
Very clear and easy to follow instructions. I made one for myself and great for someone wearing glasses as elastic seemed to pop off my smallish ears! thank you
Great video. I really like this version of the DIY face mask. It appears uncomplicated to make. The manual ties are an good option when elastic bands are not available. I can see elastic bands can easily be incorporated when they become available. One advantage of the manual ties is you can adjust the tightness around your face based on how good a seal you want around your face...speaking as a surgeon.
Fantastic video! Instructions are very clear and easy to understand. Great idea on the t-shirts for stretchy ties. Should be much more comfortable than hair ties or elastic!
THANK YOU - this is by far the best video I've watched - and you would not believe how many I've watched. Your t-shirt ties are brilliant - what a great idea. Gotta start sewing now - stay safe - from Southern Crete (Greece)
I've shared this video with so many people! I do sew but why with this easy tutorial? I tried switching to rubber bands instead of the ties for getting a haircut soon---since you can't wear ties over your hair---and it will work great. There is plenty of space inside the mask to add more layers or a filter. Very clever and clearly explained.
Linda Shapona Thank you for your excellent directions for the medical mask with filter and t-shirt ties. I have made 6 of them already. My 6 year old grandaughter across the country wants a face mask. What size should the fabric be cut? Should I keep the opening the same size? Thank you for your help.
Thanks for the tip on t-shirt ties. I used old slacks to make mask fronts and grabbed an oversized old t-shirt to make the backs. Will try out the ties.
Jan, this is good for those who KNOW how to sew well - But not simple or practical for those who don't - I sew a lot, and am just looking for different ideas. Yours is good but your demo isn't simple - Thumbs up for the end product which is good.
I've been making some this weekend and what I noticed about the fit to the face is that you need to make sure the folds of the pleats touch each other on the side, or there is a slight gap that tends to pull away from the face. I really like the idea of making the stretch ties and will be using this, but also experimenting with making ear loops out of them. Thanks! Excellent video.
I have used 7” pipe cleaners for nose wire. Also little girls tights material make soft but stretchy ear loops instead of ties. Experiment with length, but her process of pulling the stretchy fabric till it curls in works great.
I've made several of these masks and my spouse loves them. He wears them with glasses and even though i didnt add the nose clip, if you tuck it as close to your lower lashes as possible there's no fog!
Great tutorial! I love your mask what nice colors. Definitely the best video out there and easy to understand instructions. Thank you for sharing 😊 God bless you
I currently have the Coronavirus and missed my chance to order elastic a few weeks ago when it was available. I am still on quarantine but am so happy to have found your tutorial as the t-shirt strips for ties is ingenious. Thank you for sharing.
So happy I found this video! There is no elastic available where I live. I tried using hair ties as an alternative. With some tweaking it would probably work but the one I made was rough on the ears. So I'm starting fresh again tomorrow and I'll definitely try this. Thank you!
I was making masks with sew in interfacing but ran out of interfacing. This filter pocket style is perfect! Very clear instructions. For nose piece....I have pipe cleaners left over from a kids school project. I cut two lengths of 4" each, fold down just the tips so the metal tip does not poke through and fold a small piece of duct tape over the ends to hold them together. It works very well and it make the nose piece padded so it's a bit more comfortable and helps to seal around the nose. I got that idea from a JoAnn's tips and tricks video on making masks if anyone wants a visual of that.
I was following along great until you got to the pleats and talked about folding down one pin to the next. I understood the first one you did but after that I was completely lost. EDIT: I found your tutorial on the pleats. It cleared up my confusion. Thank you for taking the time to make these tutorials.
Thank you Jan. I love your tutorial on the face mask. I have watched over 25 videos on making masks. Yours is the one I was looking for. I want a mask with the perfect pocket for a filter.
Great video...my favorite. Will the metal on nose rust? I was told coated floral wire is best. I use this pattern, I love it. I also put a stitch on either side to keep from wire from shifting. My girlfriend also uses this pattern and makes the nose a pocket to remove/change wire, just make the top stitch L shape. Haven’t tried that yet.
Thank you for this instruction video. It was easy to follow, and quick to make! I am now making several for a friend who works in healthcare. (not front line).
@@sewgatormomm I'm glad I checked this video out specifically because I agree after doing a few finicky and careful ones hopefully muscle memory will take over.
To make pleats just fold the mask in half, press. Then open up and fold the top to the center ironed fold and iron at the top of that fold, and fold the bottom up to the middle fold and press. Then flip over and pintuck up at each of the folds. Super easy.
I've a request for 150 of these. They have two pleats that are eyeballed in, held with my fingers and sewn. Forget the measuring, pinning and then sewing. It takes too much time. Also, if you are using a t-shirt with zero or one side seams, just have the tie go across the entire inside instead of sewing it at the corners. The bottom ties don't need to be as long, btw. For the nose piece, a coffee bag tie/closer works great.
I LOVE how calmly you teach and clearly explain instructions! Do you have any tutorials on making a Bra for xxxxLG girls out of cotton? I've fallen in love with the comfort of cotton after making several of your no sew masks. Keep teaching with your knowledge and soothing voice :) !!!
These are lovely but we crank out 6 to 10 an hour to meet our Chicago hospital needs so unfortunately no time for pins and ironing. . We also use sock tops, headbands , bra straps etc. thanks ! Please everyone keep sewing !,
Here's a hint: Go to Ebay and search for clear elastic or mobilon, 1/4". The 1/8 is too flimsy. The first people to do so will find a treasure trove of latex free ear loop material. It doesn't all stretch a lot, but it's quite comfortable behind the ears. You will need to cut them in 7 or 7 1/2 inch lengths. I'm delivering 140 masks tomorrow to the facility where dad lives.
For those of us who don't have a sewing machine, just sew it by hand, it doesn't take long, and hey!, what else are we doing while we're stuck at home, ? more cleaning!?

Like many people I have made different masks. This one is so clever, directions very clear and I appreciate your time and efforts! Thanks!
YES!!!!! Finally someone who made making the mask fun! Thank you so much for your tutorial! You really broke it down nice for me! God Bless You!!!!!!
thank you i think your directions are clear and I wanted the folds and place to put a filter. I looked @ several sites and liked yours the best!
That was really nice. I love to see when a person irons what they sow. The T-shirt tie was genius
Just made one. You're right you can't go to the store to get the elastic so the tie down with the T shirt as strings is a great idea. Thank you.
I love your purposeful style and efficiency in delivering your message. Well done.
Thank you for sharing this. It is perfect for my needs. I did add a small seam at each end of the wires to keep them from moving.
Using a T-shirt to create the ties was such a smart idea! It normally takes forever to sew meters of neat tie straps. Now it can be done in seconds! Thanks for the idea!
Shoe laces are sturdier and easier
Do the ties fray badly, after washing?
TAWN no. You can actually buy t-shirt balls of yarn now at craft stores- it’s easy and fun to use and is very durable. T-shirt yarn holds up incredibly well and does not break down in hot dryer heat as elastic does over time.
I can use just a cotton t-shirt?
Samantha Gaffney yes. I cut up the bottom of an over sized t shirt for the ties. And can still wear the shortened tee shirt to bed.
Good job, thank you.
great idea
Thanks so much for this... appreciate your simple directions! Other comments are appreciated and got few other ideas. (dart at bottom, I'll try. And moms old shirts -helpful... Becky's moms contribution)
Spent 30 minutes looking for elastic, in case I'd need it, and think the old tees I have for another project will be best, Thank you! gonna get sewing.
Love your masks! Thank you so much for thinking about those of us who are having a difficult time finding elastic😷
Of all the surgical masks surgeons wear in the operating room, they are all with ties, not elastic bands.
Thanks so much for the great instructions. Love the idea of using old t-shirts for the ties.
Best mask pattern ive seen yet and I've made lots! This is the only one I will make going forward! LOVE the t shirt ties!
Creative and elegant solution for lack of elastic! Thank you for sharing your pattern and your idea for sourcing ties.
Fantastic video! Instructions are very clear and easy to understand. Great idea on the t-shirts for stretchy ties. Should be much more comfortable than hair ties or elastic!
this is by far the easiest mask ive seen need to make one for my son. I need to find something i can use for the pipe cleaner. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve watched so many face mask tutorials and yours is by far the best!!!!!

@@judithwhisler423 Does 7 mean yes?
THANK YOU - this is by far the best video I've watched - and you would not believe how many I've watched. Your t-shirt ties are brilliant - what a great idea. Gotta start sewing now - stay safe - from Southern Crete (Greece)
I've shared this video with so many people! I do sew but why with this easy tutorial? I tried switching to rubber bands instead of the ties for getting a haircut soon---since you can't wear ties over your hair---and it will work great. There is plenty of space inside the mask to add more layers or a filter. Very clever and clearly explained.
Best tutorial I have seen for a mask. Easy. Thank you.

Thank you for your excellent directions for the medical mask with filter and t-shirt ties. I have made 6 of them already. My 6 year old grandaughter across the country wants a face mask. What size should the fabric be cut? Should I keep the opening the same size?
Thank you for your help.
Do you know the size for kids?
Thank you
I love your teaching style and am enjoying making these masks. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the tip on t-shirt ties. I used old slacks to make mask fronts and grabbed an oversized old t-shirt to make the backs. Will try out the ties.
Thanks! Did a version with t-shirt material entirely. Had to adjust pleats for fabric thickness but worked just fine 🙂
Love this video. Never thought of using t-shirt fabric for the ties.
Fantastic job! Best video I've watched on making face mask. You make it look so simple.
I have made three different styles and patterns and this one wins by far!!! And the t shirt ties are the best!
Just finished the pleating successfully. Thank you for this video, it works even for the pleating-challenged like me!!
Thank you for sharing 😊 God bless you
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. This was explained so easily. I'm ready to follow your instructions and try it tonight 😊
I currently have the Coronavirus and missed my chance to order elastic a few weeks ago when it was available. I am still on quarantine but am so happy to have found your tutorial as the t-shirt strips for ties is ingenious. Thank you for sharing.
Get well Cheryl
So happy I found this video! There is no elastic available where I live. I tried using hair ties as an alternative. With some tweaking it would probably work but the one I made was rough on the ears. So I'm starting fresh again tomorrow and I'll definitely try this. Thank you!
If you are into upcycled clothing why not try elastic from old underwater and bras (respectfully).
I watched lots of videos on masks, thank you for your simplicity and using the T-shirt for ties!! Great design!😁😁😍
t-shirt ties are amazing!!
I would like to see it

Thank for this video! I was getting frustrated that I ran out of elastic and really wanted to make more masks for family, friends and neighbors ❤️
Great and easy tutorial, going to attempt some this afternoon for family and friends. Thanks for Sharing. Love the idea of the t-shirt material.
Thank you for the idea of the t shirt ties! So much easier!! Terrific idea👍
The most clear with step by step simple instructions for making a mask. Thanks
Thank you for this instruction video. It was easy to follow, and quick to make! I am now making several for a friend who works in healthcare. (not front line).
Wonderful video. Thank you so much. Will be using this pattern for my next set of masks!!
This is great! I'm going to make my first mask today! Thank you for an excellent lesson!
Im just eyeballing it , pinning takes too much time . I need to make 70 of these by monday. thanks for video
I’m going to make a template with all the marks and then just use chalk the fold lines. I think eyeballing will be second nature after a few of these.
@@sewgatormomm I'm glad I checked this video out specifically because I agree after doing a few finicky and careful ones hopefully muscle memory will take over.
@@sewgatormomm template is great idea!
Thanks so much for this - with elastic being the new toilet paper, this is the best!
