Never seen ipe with such a light color.
Ipe makes great fretboards for guitars. I got a neck made with an Ipe fretboard about 10 years ago by Warmoth - lovely piece of kit.

the curve in the arm was redesigned in order to help make the seat more comfortable when swinging and sitting (without the frustration of knocking against the table)
The harbor freight near me carries Evaporust. You should check it out if you have one nearby.
unfortunately the one here does not. most home depos also carry it. but both of mine do not.

Sweet addition to the workbench mr James , i really like it .
If you want a shaped seat, you could always do a round mount to the casting and stick a large bearing to it (the plate) and mount the shaped portion to the bearing itself. There are lots of low profile bearings so it could still be around the right height without having to move it on your bench. I'd actually be willing to bet that there are swivel mounts that would be fairly simple to swap out for, too.
That is why I did not scoop out the seat I put on it. I may end up doing that. Time will tell.

You can add a bearing in the center of cherry seat to support ipe seat to swing.
I was looking at doing that and may in the future. It would just make the seat much thicker.

I really like using the relief cuts + chisel technique. Especially when my fret saw can't cut through the thick material
I brought a few pieces of Ipe because it was a pretty good deal and I've heard about its incredible resilience and toughness. Yeah, after a couple hours of working it with hand tools I just took the L. It is so brutal on tool edges and the interlocking grain made it impossible to get a smooth surface without tear out. Also the particular type of Ipe I got produced yellow powder when planed that stained my work surfaces, hands and tools!
That's funny, I was just thinking of making a swing out table for my seat!
Nonagon is the name for a 9 sided shape, also if you are into psychedelic rock, Nonagon infinity is a great album by one of my favorite artists King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

I’ve been stripping rust using white vinegar and salt bath as it’s quite cheap and easy to get hold of. I bet they don’t do that I am work in Great Britain for a bench stall I have to have a look at sounds quite quirky
Nice find! I had one on my bench for a while but ended up taking it off as it kept getting in the way. Might look at using it when my new workshop is built and I have more room and a new workbench designed to accommodate the seat.

Lovely result. Will you use the ipe piece that you did a bit of work on for something else? Might make a nice four legged low stool. You could even cheat and use a power sander to finish it off.
I may make a staked stool out of it.

If I may, I usually find that using a thinner width chisel when roughing out the curves makes it easier as there is less resistance, then after that I come in with a wider chisel to smooth it out, files and rasps or sandpaper also work great for smoothing it, in my experience.
Right on. you will see me using both methods here at different times the smaller chisel gives more control.

I like the idea of a seat that just goes away without fiddling with a stool and all the chips and stuff on the floor. Personally though I would want some sort of easy height adjustment since not every task is comfortable at the same height. Maybe bolt some wood to the iron plate and make a big ol' wooden screw to thread into it? Drilling through the metal would be quite the task so maybe offset it in a way where you wouldn't have to? I dunno lol I may be coming up with a solution to a non existent problem.
Love it! Now that you have had it for a while do you use it? Im thinking about getting one but i wonder how much i would actually use it.
The problem I have with it is that if it's out all the way and I sit on it my bench isn't quite heavy enough and it sometimes starts to tip the bench. Although I'm looking forward to having it on my new bench which will be considerably heavier
I've on and off wanted one of these but never wanted to pay for the Benchcrafted version. So when I saw this I went to eBay. The cheapest one there is $199 not including tax and shipping. And needs work. The Benchcrafted version is $220 not including tax and shipping. Maybe Benchcrafted isn't as expensive as i thought.
this one cost me $80 most of the time when I see them at tool meets they are around $100 in this condition.

How about using the coping saw, you build a while ago, had that not been an ideal tool to cut the round seat?
For material this thick that would have taken quite a decent amount of time to cut out. A chisel and mallet actually go really quickly.

Is there some reason you don’t use a turning saw to cut this out? I understand that Ipe may be rough on the blade, but using it on the cherry would be a no-brainer for me.
With stock this thick I find the chisel to be faster and far more enjoyable, but in the end whatever you like to use.
You mentioned with the postdrill that you sandblasted it instead of wirewheel it because of the oil. Here you wirewheeled it. Did I miss anything?
The post drill would have oil from all the moving parts that require oil. If he had used the wire wheel, the oil and junk would just get spread around causing it hard for paint to stick. The seat would not have had much oil if any.

This one did not have grease and oil on it and I was using a new wire wheel. So this one was good to go.
We stopped stocking ipe. No one buys it unless their deck boards need replaced

I've always wanted one of these seats too, seriously expensive tho to get the kit from Benchcrafted 😳 I straight out REFUSE to use Ipe for anything, stuff is like steel 🤦♂️😂
In case ya were really wonderin..... Pentagon 5, Hexagon 6, Heptagon 7, Octagon 8, Nonagon 9, Decagon 10, Hendecagon 11, Dodecagon 12, Tridecagon 13....... I'm not goin any further, but my favourite of these is an Icosidigon, 22 sides, word jus sounds really funny to me 🤷♂️😂
