His transition to khandam are clear, unique and smooth. Particularly Trisra Mel Kalam and Keezh Kalam when he plays will be soothing and astonishing. His thoppi sugam is unique and replica of pazhani Ayya 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼He gives complete Sangeetham in his Thani.

An amalgamation of the great pazhani style with his own unique style! One of the best Thani Avarthanams ever!

Great Vidwans like him should get back to Mother Land and open a school for Percussion instruments and teach hundreds of deserving students. Sankaran sir has good number of performing students in Chennai and once he begins the school, his senior students could help him to conduct classes and he can do the overall administration and management and chip in for any expert opinions.
This is the Only way He as a Senior Most student of Palani Subudu sir could carry the mantle of Pudukkottai school and Bhani which I feel, as a trained Mrudangists should be done. Is it not enough for him for having spent nearly five decades of time in Canada? Had he not have enough of everything in Life?
In fact I have told him the same twice during 2013-14 when he visited Chennai for the December seasons and on both the occasions Mami was also with him and on both the times he was non committal and just smiled and tapped me on back and moved away. I just can't understand his mind and heart and what is not there here to sow a seed of the greatest art form???🤔🙄

Respect your your opinion. To bring back Puthukottai / Palani sir bhani to its glory, Shankaran sir can consider moving back, spend his retirement years in back home and teach a lot of students like you said. We have Arun Kumar, Mannarkoil Balaji, Neiveli Venkatesh and many others already but that’s not enough. I respectfully believe Shankaran sir have such ideas but it’s should not be delayed further. End of the day, it’s the masters personal life and decisions.

I believe this was recorded as part of David Nelson's thesis. There are recordings of other mridangam vidwans - T.K.Murthy, Karaikudi Mani, Palghat Raghu as part of this series on TH-cam. All of them play thani for kaligiyunte.

Yes, this was recorded as part of David Nelson's thesis at Wesleyan University.

@@thecarnaticworld2627 Yes. It is part of David Nelson's PHD thesis in which he transcribed every note of the 5 Tanis. Well worth the purchase for anyone interested at University Microfilms. All of the other Tanis were recorded in India with DK Jayaraman singing Kaligiyunte. This one could not be recorded there, so Sangita Kalanadhi T. Viswanathan sang Kaligiyunte. The Concert actually tool place at Amherst College, I was in the front row, but David teaches now at Wesleyan, and of course Viswa did then.
