That's fine for smaller pots, but when you get a 12-inch pot or larger, you're going to overwater that plant! Instead, people need to say water when 1/4 to 1/3 of the pot is dry instead of the top 1 to 2 inches.

It's quite simple. If you can't give plants similar conditions as they would have where they grow, you will have a lot of dead plants. I've grown orchids for years and I'm in NE Scotland. Due to my spinal cord injury, I need the temperature to be around 80 degrees, 24/7 to try and prevent severe muscle spasms and severe nerve pain. The RH in my house is between 75% - 85% and I have to kill patches of mould occasionally. It's approaching a year since I bought my first aroid, now I have more plants than what is generally tolerated - and I will be buying more. Test your plants every four days until you find out how long they take to dry out. It might be a pain in the butt, but you'll learn how often to water them depending on the season etc. The natural RH is around 60% in UK houses, depending on the heat of your home, so raising it shouldn't be a problem. Beware of humidifiers! I had one running day and night and the mould grew everywhere. Nice one, Jan ;)
Exactly what I been saying. Ppl think I have a green thumb but I say I do not, I grow plants right for MY environment that's why they succeed. Being in florida certainly helps with my plant preferences.

I'm a member of a few different Facebook plant groups. People appreciate what I bring to them because I'm a Master Gardener. I help identify pests, diseases, and give care tips. I have been blocked from a few because I give the same advice as you did and disagreed or out right contradicted what a moderator or group owner says. I don't know everything about every plant and don't pretend to, but won't let bad advice slip by unnoticed. Great video! Let's face it, nursing any living thing can be overwhelming; but split chores into Conditions and Care, and it's less taxing. The labor spent on Conditions hopefully will be far lighter than the labor devoted to Care. As we adjust our growing environment to match a plant's habitat, hopefully the Conditions efforts are once-and-done, while the daily/weekly/yearly Care routines are what really test our resolve. - - - - - Also your perspective helps in troubleshooting. I might celebrate that I own an extremely rare Anthurium forgetii - it has fenestrations when I summer the plant outdoors! Wait, step back, and study the native habitat, and I'll see that Colombia doesn't host any Melanoplus ponderosus (spur-throated grasshoppers) that are chewing holes in my expensive leaves! It's a bug not a feature!
The green house was a great idea,I’m getting my self one. Living in Chicago I need one it takes so long for it to warm up here,by the time I go to the flower store what I want is gone. Thank you for this very informative video. I have a tendency to underwater. I began to get plants less than 1 year ago in November. Yes, they were tiny seedlings and yes, it was almost at the beginning of winter. I figured: 1. I want them to grow roots with me in this new city I now call home. 2. If I can get them to survive through the winter, they are more likely to thrive. A few have died. Each has been a learning experience. Your channel and a few others have been an excellent resource. Most plants have survived and have outgrown their containers. Two of them have reproduced. They are still very small. I got them as 1 leaf seedlings. They are now how I imagine you'd buy them at a graden center. I'm thrilled with the process and with this learning experience. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and for being an inspiration.
I use TH-cam 2 get a variety of info so 'I' can judge what sounds like a good starting point & then adjust my care as needed 4 my plants, my environment, my time availability & my plants health & needs. Ur channel is just 1 of many channels & resources I choose 2 use. And, honestly, if I watch someone who says "this is the only way 2 grow ur plants", I do listen 2 make sure I haven't misunderstood but if I did interpret correctly, I generally don't add them 2 my list as a resource because, I feel they r probably @ the beginning of their journey & still have A LOT of learning 2 do. I want honesty & a practiced hand @ plant growing & that kind of mind set just doesn't inspire my confidence. I have been raising plants most of my 56 years of life but there r so many new plants that even my approach 2 plant care, that has worked 4-ever, needs adjustments 2 accommodate all the new varieties of plants that we now have 2 choose from. Thank u 4 ur insights, tips & tricks, I learn a lot from u & other TH-camr's by understanding that u can only offer advice based on ur, or their, personal experiences in ur environment & ur set up 4 the types of plants u love 2 grow. Thank you, I learn so much from your tips 😊 And thank you for saying that you don't use a humidifyer 😅 I struggle with that, I have naturally between 55% to 68% humidity in my appartment after I godt so many plants and mosspoles. And I still hear that I need to use the humidifyer. You know, the devil and the angel on the shoulders 😂😂
I loved this video and it got me thinking about how you said maybe think about getting plants that naturally grow in your native area. I live in dry Colorado and I love tropical plants, not the spiky dull plants here. My poor plants live in a naturally dry environment

I believe in tailoring your care based on the conditions you have or can create rather than only picking plants that will do well in the conditions you have. I will keep learning as much as I can about different ways to grow plants as big as I can despite the conditions. Saying I wont be able to grow these plant because I don't live in Sydney is not gonna do it for me

I have had calathea’s for years. (Why dont you grow them?!) the one thing that made a huge difference for me was when i started growing carnivorous plants and had to use pure water and not tap water. (I have very hard water here). The difference was noticeable! I have since acquired a verrucosum that was in an awful state and found your channel. It has been very helpful thank you. Would it be ok to combine a small leaved philodendron like micans in the same pot and on the same mosspole with gloriosum or melanochrysum? Are there any negative side effects or could they maybe even benefit from each other, like some mixed veggies do?
Hey Jan, thanks for your informative videos. Many of my plants are in self watering pots in mineral soil. However, the mineral soil in my poles dries out very quickly, so now I want to try the moss poles. Do you have experience combining moss poles with mineral soil? I would build myself a "grow vertical" for this purpose. Do you have any recommendations regarding the dimensions? For the standard moss pole you emphiehlst 6cm diameter, right? Thank you very much.
Important information to keep in mind for our plant growth expectations. Sidney has conditions that enable tropical plants to thrive. The results achieved in these videos is not possible everywhere without extensive environmental modifications even though plant poles are used.
Hi! Love your content and was curious how you orient your climbing and crawling plants towards the light? Recently got a cutting of a paraiso verde and its ready to grow up a pole, but curious if you face your plants towards the light or windows. Seems like you see the "worst" part of the plant, so had me wondering your technique.
Yes the plant will always face the light.... that's where growlight come in handy :) if you check out my houseplant tours you'll see where they all are positioned :)
You’d think this would be common sense but sadly, its not. I cant believe the things I see on local plant FB pages where people are recommending watering on as schedule. Following that kind of advice will eventually get you in trouble with rotted roots. Thanks for another great video!

I'm really sad, I tried using a wet moss pole, its submeged in water reservoir most of the time and plants are in hydroponics. And unfortunatelly I don't see leaves increasing size like yours :( I think maybe I have insufficient humidity
I am Mexican, but I live in Germany, inside the house the temperature is 18-25°C, and the humidity is 55-65%, my friends tell me that how is it possible that succulents die on me, for example... well, what can I say? They just don't survive easy here!
Constant 99% humidity is unnatural. Not even a tropical rainforest is like that. In the current heatwave (107 F), El Yunque is at 70% humidity right now. If someone wants to have a plant artificially at 99% in a cabinet, goi for it. But it’s not necessary. I make the comment to make sure people realize 99% is not a necessary or even desirable thing. because I already see some plant people stressing about how that’s not doable for them. Personally, I’d rather live with my plants than put them behind glass out a misconception that they absolutely need ridiculously high humidity.
I love you and your house plants! However, when touring gardens, it would be good to do your research and know what plants are looking at. Alternatively, you could have a guide/botanist with you that could assist you with us knowledge. I think when you say things like look at these green things over here, it makes it seem very elementary. On the other hand, I don’t mind a casual approach, because I am a fan of your channel, but some people are looking for major plant education.
If people want a horticultural level of education they need to find another channel :D i definitely want to learn more but first and foremost I want this to be approcheable content :)
I actually have a couple of tours with some of the experts from the botanic garden lined up though :)

99% humidity? Wth? That should kill your plants in there... not even talking about mold. How are they alive? I have the same temperature in my cabinet. My humidity is 75 tho. I have weather stripped every gap. How can you get 99%? And not kill your plants in there....?

Thank you, I learn so much from your tips 😊 And thank you for saying that you don't use a humidifyer 😅 I struggle with that, I have naturally between 55% to 68% humidity in my appartment after I godt so many plants and mosspoles. And I still hear that I need to use the humidifyer. You know, the devil and the angel on the shoulders 😂😂
Haven’t used one in over 3 years now :) i have so many plants, they create their own humidity :D
I loved this video and it got me thinking about how you said maybe think about getting plants that naturally grow in your native area. I live in dry Colorado and I love tropical plants, not the spiky dull plants here. My poor plants live in a naturally dry environment

I believe in tailoring your care based on the conditions you have or can create rather than only picking plants that will do well in the conditions you have. I will keep learning as much as I can about different ways to grow plants as big as I can despite the conditions. Saying I wont be able to grow these plant because I don't live in Sydney is not gonna do it for me
Not saying it’snnot possible, you’ll just have more work to do to supplement conditions or the plant might not thrive to its full potential :)

I have had calathea’s for years. (Why dont you grow them?!) the one thing that made a huge difference for me was when i started growing carnivorous plants and had to use pure water and not tap water. (I have very hard water here). The difference was noticeable! I have since acquired a verrucosum that was in an awful state and found your channel. It has been very helpful thank you. And i just love your cat. How long have you been in oz?
Just not having a good time hrowing calatheas indoors. I will grow some outdoors in soring though :) it’s been 11 years :)

Would it be ok to combine a small leaved philodendron like micans in the same pot and on the same mosspole with gloriosum or melanochrysum?
Are there any negative side effects or could they maybe even benefit from each other, like some mixed veggies do?

Hey Jan, thanks for your informative videos. Many of my plants are in self watering pots in mineral soil. However, the mineral soil in my poles dries out very quickly, so now I want to try the moss poles. Do you have experience combining moss poles with mineral soil? I would build myself a "grow vertical" for this purpose. Do you have any recommendations regarding the dimensions? For the standard moss pole you emphiehlst 6cm diameter, right? Thank you very much.
Important information to keep in mind for our plant growth expectations. Sidney has conditions that enable tropical plants to thrive. The results achieved in these videos is not possible everywhere without extensive environmental modifications even though plant poles are used.
Hi! Love your content and was curious how you orient your climbing and crawling plants towards the light? Recently got a cutting of a paraiso verde and its ready to grow up a pole, but curious if you face your plants towards the light or windows. Seems like you see the "worst" part of the plant, so had me wondering your technique.
Yes the plant will always face the light.... that's where growlight come in handy :) if you check out my houseplant tours you'll see where they all are positioned :)

You’d think this would be common sense but sadly, its not. I cant believe the things I see on local plant FB pages where people are recommending watering on as schedule. Following that kind of advice will eventually get you in trouble with rotted roots. Thanks for another great video!

I'm really sad, I tried using a wet moss pole, its submeged in water reservoir most of the time and plants are in hydroponics. And unfortunatelly I don't see leaves increasing size like yours :(

I am Mexican, but I live in Germany, inside the house the temperature is 18-25°C, and the humidity is 55-65%, my friends tell me that how is it possible that succulents die on me, for example... well, what can I say? They just don't survive easy here!
Succulents need a LOT of light to survive.

Constant 99% humidity is unnatural. Not even a tropical rainforest is like that. In the current heatwave (107 F), El Yunque is at 70% humidity right now.
If someone wants to have a plant artificially at 99% in a cabinet, goi for it. But it’s not necessary. I make the comment to make sure people realize 99% is not a necessary or even desirable thing. because I already see some plant people stressing about how that’s not doable for them. Personally, I’d rather live with my plants than put them behind glass out a misconception that they absolutely need ridiculously high humidity.
Never said 99% is required :) 95% of my plants are grown outside the cabinet & they are thriving :)
I love you and your house plants! However, when touring gardens, it would be good to do your research and know what plants are looking at. Alternatively, you could have a guide/botanist with you that could assist you with us knowledge. I think when you say things like look at these green things over here, it makes it seem very elementary. On the other hand, I don’t mind a casual approach, because I am a fan of your channel, but some people are looking for major plant education.
If people want a horticultural level of education they need to find another channel :D i definitely want to learn more but first and foremost I want this to be approcheable content :)
I actually have a couple of tours with some of the experts from the botanic garden lined up though :)
99% humidity? Wth? That should kill your plants in there... not even talking about mold. How are they alive? I have the same temperature in my cabinet. My humidity is 75 tho. I have weather stripped every gap. How can you get 99%? And not kill your plants in there....?
Well clearly they are alive :) as long as there is airflow the humidity doesn’t seem to be an issue :)
