    🕵️‍♂️ WHO AM I?:
My name is Matt Estlea, I'm a 26 year old Woodworker from Basingstoke in England and my aim is to make your woodworking less s***.
I come from 5 years tuition at Rycotewood Furniture Centre with a further 1 year working as an Artist in Residence at the Sylva Foundation, which is where I began growing my business. I then returned to Rycotewood to teach Evening Classes for 2 Years, while also teaching City and Guilds Furniture Making for 3 years. They were some long 12 hour days!
In September, 2021. I resigned from teaching at the school to focus on my own business.
In addition to all that studying and teaching during the week, I occupied my weekends working at Axminster Tools and Machinery in Basingstoke. For 5 years, I helped customers with purchasing tools, demonstrated in stores and events, and gained extensive knowledge about a variety of tools and brands. I discontinued this job role in 2019 to focus on teaching at Rycotewood and my own business.
During the week, I film woodworking projects, tutorials, reviews and a viewer favourite 'Tool Duel' where I compare two competitive manufacturers tools against one another to find out which is best. I also have a Free Online Woodworking School which you should definitely check out!

I can almost guarantee I’d somehow manage to cut myself on a mallet 😂

Y'know we've all got *that* mate who could sharpen a balloon if he wanted too.... the kind who's always sharpening something for someone, one day it's a knife, next day it's a set of 4ft mower blades for a local farmer. Now *that* guy could sharpen a rubber mallet until it could cut silk!
My friend was given a diamond belt for a belt sander to do a particularly rough job, after that he was making 'orc swords' with thick angle iron to mess around with in his garden, you could cut logs with these things 👀
It's handy knowing him though, allows me to use my estwing framing hammer like a hashing chisel or to dig out mortar, and just get him to give the edges a wee sharpen every few months, that framing hammer can take a proper beating!

Nice job have you thought of turning own chisel handles, snake wood to match knife say.

I’m at the other end of a woodworking life to Matt Estlea. In my 45 plus years, virtually everything has changed - with some changes beyond recognition. I’ve also gone through phases of tool collecting rather than tool using; keeping tools so pristine that I certainly wasn’t going to use them etc. etc.
How have I ended up - not that it means this is where you should end up. I hope I’ve finally reached a process that suits my preferred way of working. Firstly, most of my work is in the workshop or around a large barn - very little site work. That influences the kind of storage solutions that I need. I bought a lot of old office storage units from a form going bust. The ordinary desk pedestals are stacked upon each other and I found that I could easily adapt them for systainers. I took the tall storage cupboards and installed in 2 of them vertical “drawers” rather like those pull out pantry things. Each “drawer” is a sheet of plywood running on drawer slides top and bottom. On each side of the plywood, I hang my hand tools. Each of the sets of chisels are in a made to measure tray, held in place by magnets whilst the tray is secured onto the ply with French cleats. All this because, my way of working is not to take one chisel out but take the whole tray to the workbench so that I can easily swap sizes of chisels. I also have several pieces of leather handy for stropping. In fact, I strop the chisel every couple of cuts because it’s easier to maintain a good edge by doing a little very often. Under my table saw, I built a pedestal in which I keep everything I might need on the saw - from spanner’s to vernier gauge to tape. Same idea with router table and drill press.
I also suffer from extreme lost pencilitis; in fact, put down and forget where for about every tool I can imagine (don’t laugh, I’m only you in 45 years time). So I now wear a tool vest rather like a fisherman’s vest. Mine is from Helly Hansen and super strong. I now keep all my personal stuff (glasses, pencils, tapes, driver bits, Brad AWO, marking knife, disto, angle-meter in my vest. However, I do forget where I put my vest once in a while.
So, everyone works differently and everyone will have a different storage nirvana. I don’t have cut outs but I do use those rubber mat inserts which keep tools from rolling around.

I know the snap on chest is a nice storage device but should it not be a self made Matt masterpiece?

I don't know about anyone else but from what I've seen, ever since the pandemic, Lie-Nielsen's inventory has been VERY hit or miss. Things are constantly going out of stock and taking a LONG time to come back. I will say Lee Valley/Veritas has had problems with it but it doesn't seem nearly so bad as Lie-Nielsen.
Having said that, nice tool chest and excellent layout ideas Matt. If you don't mind I may pilfer one or two.

Very nice job! I thought about using foam myself but decided to just use a thin rubber liner instead, as it would've been too much work cutting. So far the liner works very well.
