bro this shit is so textbook. god i’m amazed it’s a masterclass in pure r&b but it’s also a timeline of r&b and soul music in general. look at all the accents, all the influences, the small details. that classy band arrangement, is pure 60s, the neutral face gestures and reserved, jogging in place style movements are 50s and 60s, along with some of those lower, doo-wop melodies in the first verse. 70s style with the open silk shirt and the distance away from the edge of the stage, center stage mic placement and low swooping cool and groovy gestures thru out the 1st bridge and 2nd verse. the peak and valleys, the ebb and flow, the push and pull of this performance. the tilted slightly cocked head, grimace at the camera and matter-of-fact rigid, pointed hand movements the sheer snarl and attitude of it is pure 90s. a complete masterclass. he is such a student.
Everytime I hear this song... Anyway this man sings it... Makes me feel like the first time I heard it, all over again... Joe isn't givin the props he deserves as a vocalist and as an artist. I will love this song forever.... Thank u for sharing!!!
Joe is not perfect, he's given some half ass performances. When he was on Oprah years ago doing I Wanna Know, he cut the song short, stayed away from certain power notes, and only started to sing the song the way he should have the last 50 seconds! And yes Eric Benet's a better live singer. I however do like his performance here, and like I said he sang the hell out of I don't wanna be playa before this!
+DeeNice681 Joe isn't perfect...But he is a perfectionist. He doesn't want to do performances straining to hit high notes (especially on TV...) when he's been singing every night.
👍😎👌Now that is classic Joe in his element. His vocal prowess speaks for itself that's why R. Kelly was scared and concerned about his juice card getting revoked.😁
@@Jamaicafunk Now that I could believe. If you listen to Joe when he performs his single "I'm in Love" he's the only guy that can sing that song the way he did. Not even Rated R could sing it like that I promise you that for sure😎
@@moonandstarsatnight wow. That was 11 years ago. I’ve since moved to China. Those tapes are long gone. I’m glad I uploaded this here way back then. The only thing I have that I’ve never shared is a live performance we did in South Africa from the side of the stage. VIVO has a Joe channel. They uploaded a very clear version from Planet Groove. ‘No One Else’ Obviously they have the whole thing. I don’t know why they’ve never shared it.
they do this because not all songs can be performed live like they are on the track. It is also smart to do this so they don't damage their voice. You have to keep in mind that artists have to tour and are singing almost every night. Taking it down a couple steps helps preserve the voice.
this version/key sounds very good! maybe he was having some voice issues. again, the songwriters make these songs so high (for male voices). Joe pulls it off well! #TeamCancerian #fluidtalent
At the time we taped this show, the band was on tour. At the beginning of the tour we did perform the song in its original key, which I think was 3 steps up from this. But, Joe was concerned about having to sing every night, and wearing his voice out. So we took the key down. I've seen some videos of Joe performing All the Things live, and straining on that bridge section. It is really high... But he can do it when he's in good form.
Interesting, thanks for sharing with us, all the things is one of the hardest songs to hit nite wise. I can understand wanting to let your voice heal for a day or two if you're doing concerts everynight singing in the original key and straining your voice. Unlike instruments, you can lose and destroy your voice from singing too much or pushing too hard. Every singer should put their health first.
November 1, 2020 and SO PISSED THEY DIDNT HAVE OUR PICTURE QUALITY! They deserved it! Not this bullshit today!! We should see City girls like this, not Joe!
I don't like this. They keyed it way too low. Dang, he didn't get that when we touch at 2:43. That makes the song, if you ask me. Good performance, but not his best.
That's how Joe wanted it. He had to sing it every night during the tour, and if he kept it in the original key his voice would've been gone after the first week. I thought it was weird taking a song that many steps down, but after a while we got used to it.
Jamaicafunk Oh, ok. I have a question, is it wrong and unfair for me to expect singers to sound like or better than the record? I feel like a lot of artists do phenomenal things on record, but they never match it live. One of girl friends is the prime example.
I wouldn't say that it's 'wrong' for you to feel that way. Studio is one thing... The reason they sound phenomenal is because what you're hearing is the final result of many takes, comped together, and mixed. Which may have taken days to record. It could also be pro-tools enhanced. But if you're a true artist, you should be able to pull it off live as well. If you're old school, you know artists like Sammy Davis jr. James Brown, MJ & Prince took their live performances to another level, and were on their 'A' game every performance. They knew that's what the audience is paying for, and expected of them. Today the first thing an artist does before they go on tour is pre-record the whole show, sequence it in Pro-tools, and lip-sync while their dancers do the heavy choreography. I wouldn't pay money to see that. I don't blame you if you don't either.
The 90's didn't disappoint and undefeated of my 50yrs on earth 🌎...
Good years.
The best live version of this song hands down👏🏿
