Ed did so many little tasty rythmic things in his time w Skynyrd that most people and some guitarists over look or just dont get but the more you dig into his work the more little treasures you find in his playing. You hear Whiskey and you think wells thats easy enough but you soon realize how complex it is and you gotta weave multiple parts into one cohesive line to even get the vibe in Eds ballpark ....truely a brilliant player!!
"A lot more going on than you think." That is the best way to describe Ed King's musicianship and compositional style. He was one of those guys who is SO g-dd-mn smart he makes sure you never quite know just how smart he is.
Thank you Scott, that was fantastic. You are so right, the tasty bits are one of the reasons Skynyrd songs are so great and have held up so well all these years.
Simply amazing. After all these years (I'm 67) I find out just how complicated and nuanced this alcohol-soaked song actually this is. Those guys were rare birds. Thanks for the enlightenment (and great guitar work) Scott!
I must say, this is the first time I have seen the back-bone of the song played spot-on... The finger picking in all the pre-chorus, and bridge sections really show the importance of the rhythm playing on this song... the lead and solo parts seem so simple compared to the rest of the songs dynamic... Just Awesome!!!
Awesome lesson! Very insightful on the different layers of guitar on this song.I think its very cool to hear the different parts broken out even if you didn't happen to play guitar and just loved the song! Makes you appreciate the music even more. Many Thanks!!!
Just got to tell you bro. Almost in tears. I was 17 when this came out. I wanted to play guitar so bad. I’m so glad I knew who these guys were. It’s really crazy. I learned the blues from Skynard. Now my family from Mississippi. Jackson,Belzoni. I was there in Feb. Now my dad when I was a kid. Listen to Wolf,Bo, Muddy, John Lee. And I said to him. Dad that’s country blues. Boy did I get a rude awakening. Where Skynard got there blues from. I’m 67 now. And I just love your channel. Thank you for bringing the music of my youth too today.
Whiskey Rock a Roller , On the Hunt, Poison Whiskey, Down South Jukin and I Know a Little are probably my top 5 Skynyrd songs. But really, there isn't a Skynyrd song that I don't enjoy listening to. I forget that The Needle and the Spoon is right up there amongst my favs!
Thank you for the wonderful breakdown of this song Scott. They way Allen, Gary and Ed worked together was so complimentary to each other. I think this song is a prime example of that. Nobody over shadowed anyone else, everyone had room to breathe and each of the parts fit together perfectly to form the whole. Ed, kinda being "the outsider" from California always kinda tried to stay out of Allen and Gary's way but always somehow managed to be "the cherry on top" for all the music he was a part of with them. He always seemed to know exactly what to play. Their first 3 albums with Ed will always be the most special for me and the greatest example of how wonderfully 3 guitars can work together.
@asc: Love the comment buddy - word for word, I coulda wrote myself. RIP to all three of those now. And SG too course, but for me, "Skynyrd" will always be the first 3 LPs. What came after unforgettable too tho "not quite the same. Kinda like the 2nd marriage. ;-)
back strumming that G chord made me a better player today. I've been playing this with you for about 2 weeks now and it really improved my playing, thanks
👍 awesome tutorial (standing ovation!!!)you just resolved many mysterious gnarly gnarts / guitar parts I have been wondering about since the 70s ( I used to listen to my brothers vinyl with headphones) As a self-taught guitarist I've always known Allman Bros. and Skynyrd melodically weaved layers of tasty guitar licks, pinch harmonics fills etc I never knew who/ how these nuances were achieved. Never got to witness the original line up with RVZ but lucky enuf to see LS tribute 1987 and 4 other shows up to date, thank you for shedding a little light ,RIP Ed King long live rock 🤘⚡🎸👣🐊✌️🐾
Just subscribed! Can’t believe I found somebody playing these songs correctly! I’ve been playing these songs for years and tried to do them justice when we performed them. Enjoying the videos and great playing!
Really appreciate you covering all of the crossing guitar parts in the Pre-bridge / Bridge sections. For me, that's really magical - also on the, "Sometimes I Wonder" section. Great inspiration while crafting original songs - Love It!! Cheers from Seattle *Love to hire you some day Scott! ~ Alex
Dug out my Nuthin Fancy remastered CD, and my new Firebird, and got into this lesson! Always loved this song!. Great tips of the riffs and fills of Ed. Thanks!
Rocked it. I play it a little different but with only one guitar in the band you have to decide which part you want in there. So I play the big part and forget about the little stuff. By the time you get the voice in there it's full enough. Thanks Steve for another GREAT! You've taught me a TON!
APB are REAL musicians paying homage to their favorite artists. As an additional benefit they play with Artimus THE DRUMMER of Skynyrd and nicest guy you could meet.
Yes I know Artemis plays with them. I would pass out if I met him. Been listening to him since I was young. APB is the real Lynyrd Skynyrd band NOW. The Lynyrd Skynyrd band now is just a tribute band!! There is no Lynyrd Skynyrd without Ronnie Van Zant. You couldn’t pay me to go see them but I would go see APB In a heartbeat.
i guess Im asking the wrong place but does anybody know of a method to log back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly lost the account password. I appreciate any help you can give me
@Russell Mathias I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I been playing for a very long time. Not that great. But can play. Want to give all you pickers a word of advice. I started learning songs I lined and chords. And UNTILL I started learning scales. Did my guitar playing improved. Now I can work a chord and play the lead scale to that chord. I’m just scratching the surface. But I really wish I would have worked on scales. As much as I worked on chords. Cause the cord is just a position in the scale. And key. Thank you for teaching me one of the best American Southern Rock Band Ever.
Hey Scott what you do with these songs and how you break it down is amazing and I just got me excited to be playing again it's great for someone who is basically stuck or what do they call it plateaued so I can play I just do not see the whole fretboard the light bulb hasn't popped for me yet but I'm close you sir are an amazing guitar player and the comments you made about that Gibson which is an insane guitar shows shows what an amazing person you are I was brought up the same way I'm not as good of a guitar player as you probably not as good of a person either but if you put in the work you can be you remind me of that thank you it's an honor to meet you oh by the way I got a request roll Gypsy roll I bet you it's one of your favorites LOL
thank you sir I am an ED KING worshiper he is a lost treasure but you are the link to his guitar genius for which i am grateful......how bout "Same ole Blues" ?'
It means everything Scott the plate as close to the record as possible we love it thank you makes it all worth it it's that special southern rock sound
Excellent lesson, Scott! I always wondered whose brainchild this one was, too. I heard how That Smell came about, but don't know the exact story on this one. Missing you. Ed!
Scott, thanks for the video, you are a Master at your craft, i love how to see how the songs were played, thanks to you, i can pick up on playing them, Could you Please cover the songs four walls of Raiford, and the song, was i right or wrong, and little missie, thank you, rock on, Cousin Figel
Hey Scott!! Thank You for such a fantastic Breakdown of this great song!! Beautiful Firebird too!! I heard you say it was your friends guitar. I was finally able to get the Epiphone Firebird last week and I love it!! Take it easy!!
Great job Scott! This is your best one yet, I've been playing that song for years, and never played the open d part on the bridge, but I do now and it sounds great, I can't wait till we rehearse with the band so I can put this to use, also picked up a couple other little things too, good job Scott, thanks, jaybird
I can’t remember if I’ve commented before, but this breakdown is amazing, and incredibly helpful. We gotta adapt this for two guitars, so there’s some picking and choosing going on, plus the lead is already doing something of a hybrid of two parts on the bridge, so knowing what all three guitars do in the original is extremely helpful when trying to find a place to slot in.
My roots are froma Belzoni Miss. only been there twice. 10 years old. And last February. I grew up in Western Pa. Little town outside of Pittsburgh. And just fell in love with this HONKY TONK FOOT STOMPING GOOD FUCKING TIME BAND. WHEN I HEAR THEM. ITS THE HONKY TONK BLUES JUKE JOINT GOSPEL.
Good !! Gives me hope for the future . This is ridiculously insane music. It does have more funky American , shit kickin' ass slappin ' . big ole' Bass catchin' , Motorbike rippin' soul than any other band ever did muster !
I really enjoy watching you play! So relaxed, effortless.. as well it would be having done it since you were 9 yrs old right? You are spot on. I'm encouraged to relax, lighten my touch and that's made me a totally different player, thanks Scott!!
This song is really typical of the cool thing Skynyrd would do in how they would hide the changes within riffs. Gimme Three Steps does it as well in how they play a riff through the 2 chord. They were way more nuanced than they ever got credit for.
Hi, very nice song with that very Blueish sound from that particular guitar. Yeah, I like this type of song which would be compatible for party. As I am coming back to music side only the last 2 years, I can say I am a beginner in Blues music and I just know only limited number songs fron SRV, Jerry Garcia,Eric clapton. I will try to dig down in it. Usually it takes some time to have real groove of the music first in my brain and then work out. Also, for me, I have to sing , play solo part all alone .
Had a blast learning the parts you were doing here and playing along. I think I will go a little deeper and learn the lead parts. I had told my brother what tune I was learning today and he went ahead and learned the Artimas' part. What we do most of the time is the recorded versions, because I moved to SC and they are still in VA. So when we get together it's actually pretty tight straight way. Thanks Scott! I'm really pressed for time and it's really hard for me to have to work up songs from scratch by ear. Thanks to videos I can have a tune tight in a couple of evenings. Quicker than that if my other brother will take a solo or two.
I got 3 Skynyrd song, "deep dive" YT creators. This channel of course, Ryan Williams' stuff, and the first who I found, unfortunately he DEL'd all his breakdowns before YT did for him (too much 'rebel" imagery on his studio (well bedroom ;-) walls), but MAN but he did love AC as we all do. Anyways, if could wave a magic wand and have another LS band put together you three guys would replace AC GR & EK and i KNOW it would sound every bit as sweet b/c all 3 of you guys know all 3 of those guys' parts! and note for note too which blows me away. I only wish AC GR & EK could sit around together and enjoy watching you guys doing their thing. As the great man, Charlie Daniels said: "Long live the music of the Lynyrd Skynyrd band!"
Ed does have two short videos, part 1 and two showing how he does a couple of his parts. I know you spent some time with Ed, but any chance you have seen the vids I'm talking about? It's actually pretty amazing how he does it.
Hey Scott that's some fine picking there buddy what's your fav strat neck and what size frets do you like and your string size you prefer thanks Scott keep rocking....
hey scott, I just want to say, from the standpoint of a gigging guitarist who also happens to be a total skynyrd nerd, that I genuinely appreciate the way you are able to succinctly explain what I need to know, and your passion for the music causes you to really dig deep into all three guitar parts, and the tiniest nuances that other teachers gloss over, if they even mention them at all. I also appreciate the respect and reverence you have for all members of the band throughout the bands history. stay well. and please don't stop doing what you're doing. 😊 p.s. if you haven't already done it, can I get your help with Steve's parts on that smell? thanks again.
"you to really dig deep into all three guitar parts, and the tiniest nuances that other teachers gloss over, if they even mention them at all. I also appreciate the respect and reverence you have for all members of the band throughout the bands history." Yep.
Hey Scott. Did you know that even though BP was credited as a writer of this songs piano parts, Al Kooper brought in David Foster to record the piano track for this song on the studio version. Ed has made the comment many times that this album was incomplete. Sounds just fine to me. 👍🏻👍🏻
Yes, Ed told me the same thing. He didn’t like this album. He said Second Helping was their masterpiece. As I told him, Second Helping was surely a masterpiece, but I love them all.
Ed did so many little tasty rythmic things in his time w Skynyrd that most people and some guitarists over look or just dont get but the more you dig into his work the more little treasures you find in his playing.

One of my favorite Skynyrd tunes. Thanks for the video.

I STILL CRY. LEARNING THEIR MUSIC FROM YOU. WE ARE SO FORTUNATE. YOU HAVE REALLY HELPED MY GUITAR PLAYING. THANK YOU.
I'm so glad I found you! Your skills and abilities are fantastic. Thank you for breaking it down and sharing your knowledge with us.
Thank you!
my band just added this tune to our set. thank you for taking the time to show this old dog the (right) way!
Love this one! Lots of fun to play!
This guy is a really good guitar player.
Yes. Those that can hear it are grateful.
Thank you. RIP Ed.

This is my personal favorite song Skynyrd recorded...loved it then, love it now. Thankyou.

Thank you for this! Really enjoyed it! If you get time could you show how you play Steve’s part on “I know a little”?
Whiskey Rock a Roller , On the Hunt, Poison Whiskey, Down South Jukin and I Know a Little are probably my top 5 Skynyrd songs. But really, there isn't a Skynyrd song that I don't enjoy listening to. I forget that The Needle and the Spoon is right up there amongst my favs!

These videos are incredible man, please keep the Skynryd songs up I know when you do a Skynryd vid you do it right, sounds identical to the recording!
What a great breakdown of the intricacies of the songs. It amazes me of the musicianship it takes to create music!!
Dug out my Nuthin Fancy remastered CD, and my new Firebird, and got into this lesson! Always loved this song!. Great tips of the riffs and fills of Ed. Thanks!

Great lesson. Thanks for posting all those little parts with great explanation.
Thank you for watching, Jamie! 🤘🏼
Nice breakdown. Another great video. Thanks, Scott.
You just made my Friday night.

You can tell that you've spent alot of time developing your studio version of this song. Absolutely awesome! SR rules.
I love watching these tutorials. I learn so much! You are truly gifted to be able to figure this stuff out accurately. Thanks!
Awsome job Scott ! thanks for all your hard work and dedication to this music !

Slick work and one beautiful Gibson👌
Hey Scott!! Thank You for such a fantastic Breakdown of this great song!! Beautiful Firebird too!! I heard you say it was your friends guitar. I was finally able to get the Epiphone Firebird last week and I love it!! Take it easy!!
Love it Scott especially the break at 7.20 always wanted to know how to play that ..thanks brother ..love from London UK 🇬🇧
Great lesson, Scott, quite exhaustive. Beautiful FB III
Excellent tutorial Scott. Love your methodology.
I’m hooked on your approach to this music and will def check out The APB.
Been waitingggg for this one!!
Wow thanks so much for this, learning it for our band and couldnt play it right. This is spot on
Love the Teaspoon handle on the vibrola
Great job Scott! This is your best one yet, I've been playing that song for years, and never played the open d part on the bridge, but I do now and it sounds great, I can't wait till we rehearse with the band so I can put this to use, also picked up a couple other little things too, good job Scott, thanks, jaybird
Ed did the bridge section of this on his FB page a little while back I was like, wow, “there’s things goin’ on that you don’t know!”
Thanks for the tips man and most importantly keeping the music alive.
Awesome Scott thanks.
Thank you!
Dude, serious playing chops. amazing channel. thanks for everything you/you've do/done
Thanks for breaking it down I’m having trouble with it but you are helping me get it thanks
Very cool love the APB 😎👍
You give alot to,
Newer Guitar Player's!
I envy your Gifted blessing!
🇺🇲🤘🤪🤘🇺🇲
Thank you Scott, that was really great.
That was great lot of parts to that song
I can’t remember if I’ve commented before, but this breakdown is amazing, and incredibly helpful. We gotta adapt this for two guitars, so there’s some picking and choosing going on, plus the lead is already doing something of a hybrid of two parts on the bridge, so knowing what all three guitars do in the original is extremely helpful when trying to find a place to slot in.
Thank you for this gold mine!!!
thanks for these brother
Awesome dissection of a great song!! The 5 thumbs down on this excellent video must be those 5 deaf guys that surf TH-cam.😡
I can listen to the song 20 times to learn it or I can just watch you once!😁
Excellent
I really enjoy watching you play! So relaxed, effortless.. as well it would be having done it since you were 9 yrs old right? You are spot on. I'm encouraged to relax, lighten my touch and that's made me a totally different player, thanks Scott!!
I enjoy you videos. I saw APB 3 years ago in Lincoln County West Virginia. You guys were awesome.
This song is really typical of the cool thing Skynyrd would do in how they would hide the changes within riffs. Gimme Three Steps does it as well in how they play a riff through the 2 chord. They were way more nuanced than they ever got credit for.
Very good analysis , they sounded so good , but why ? This comment and the lesson is a great breakdown of the Skynyrd sound .
Scott thank you for you help on this..
Quicker than that if my other brother will take a solo or two.
Man, that is awesome! Thank you for watching my videos! 🙏🏼
Yes very nice fire bird I haven't been able to find one here in ar in the Midwest I'm having a tough time finding the right gibson dealer ,very nice.!
REALLY COOL CHANNEL!
My brain just exploded.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I got 3 Skynyrd song, "deep dive" YT creators. This channel of course, Ryan Williams' stuff, and the first who I found, unfortunately he DEL'd all his breakdowns before YT did for him (too much 'rebel" imagery on his studio (well bedroom ;-) walls), but MAN but he did love AC as we all do.

As the great man, Charlie Daniels said: "Long live the music of the Lynyrd Skynyrd band!"
Awesome thanks!! Would you do Traveling Man??
I thought I had already done that one, but seems I did not. I will add that one to my list. Thank you!
I have also been waitin for this one lol...looks like you read a few minds today lol...time to pop a brew
🍻
Ed does have two short videos, part 1 and two showing how he does a couple of his parts. I know you spent some time with Ed, but any chance you have seen the vids I'm talking about? It's actually pretty amazing how he does it.
Would love to see those!
That one part. Reminds me of I’m Searching.
Hey Scott that's some fine picking there buddy what's your fav strat neck and what size frets do you like and your string size you prefer thanks Scott keep rocking....
Your tutorials are great! Thanks so much for sharing.
They never played this song the same after ed left the band. Same with needle and the spoon. His parts and fills were killer.
Ed loved using a shell for a pick. You can hear the pinching scratching sound
Cool!
hey scott, I just want to say, from the standpoint of a gigging guitarist who also happens to be a total skynyrd nerd, that I genuinely appreciate the way you are able to succinctly explain what I need to know, and your passion for the music causes you to really dig deep into all three guitar parts, and the tiniest nuances that other teachers gloss over, if they even mention them at all. p.s. if you haven't already done it, can I get your help with Steve's parts on that smell?
thanks again.
Thank you, Scott! 🙏🏼 Smell is on my list. I am working on Jerry and I doing that video together to show how the parts work together. Soon! 🤘🏼
@@seraines excellent! I'll look forward to it.
"you to really dig deep into all three guitar parts, and the tiniest nuances that other teachers gloss over, if they even mention them at all. I also appreciate the respect and reverence you have for all members of the band throughout the bands history."

that is one fine 'Bird!
Gene Odem once said " if their was no Allen Collins there would be no Lynyrd Skynyrd.
True . But the same could be said for Ed king . Also Artimus. They both drove the band to extreme technical greatness .
