    I stumbled upon you by accident (thanks to those TH-cam algorithms!) and I'm so glad I did. Started watching a couple weeks ago, already switched car insurance to save $70 a month, opened an ally savings account, and got my first credit card. Starting to save up 6 months worth of expense to hopefully get my real estate license within the next year. This stuff is real, thank you so much graham.

    Getting too comfortable is HUGE. I worked at McDonalds for 5 years, 3 of those I was a manger I made decent money I didn't really have any experience to go elsewhere so I just... stayed. I ended up messing up and they suspended me and launched an "investigation" so I decided to resign instead of risking getting fired. It was the best thing to ever happen to me because it forced me to move on. I got a better job making triple the money, and if I hadn't got suspended I don't know if I ever would have left. I'd probably be higher in the company but really you can only go so high within a franchise McDonald's. Ironically now I'm starting to get too comfortable again and I think it might be time to move on because I've topped out in my current job.

    #5 is very relatable to me. I was working in a foundry where I pretty much hit all the tick marks on the list.
    Bored. Unmotivated. Comfortable in the wrong way. Stuck. Trapped. Etc.
    It linked to one of the previous mistakes where I was told, “You’ll work your way to CNC Operator.” and sure enough I saw nothing indicating that the current operators were in any rush to leave or get promoted.
    A family friend gave me a call recommending a position as an administrative coordinator at his machine shop. I was hesitant to leave because it was a drive and the what-if’s etc. But my gut told me it was a good idea. New environment, new working field but the same field of engineering. I went for it and it was the single best career decision of my life. I learned my niche on the engineering world and the years I spent on the machine floor were not wasted.

More likely, you are making someone else richer than you. Invest in your own "stock", called, "insert your name here". That's the best investment you can make.

      I am about to start financing a new car. Yet i do not think its actually that bad. I am financing through a credit union at 4% interest and they have their own dealership so they can get you mostly any car you are looking for a discounted price due to the relationship & business they provide to local dealers. For example a car that is 23k before taxes and fees which would end being nearly 26k after all that can make that exact same car go down to 23k out the door. Which is the same priced as a used car that is the same make/model an older year with miles on it So although people look down on financing "new" in this situation it makes sense.

    • @HowDebbieSaves
      @HowDebbieSaves 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cristian Mendoza Hi Christian. I will not disagree with that. My mistake was that I was six months pregnant and my car was old and skidding all over the road and I was afraid of having an accident. We had really bad weather that winter here. So my husband and I wanted to upgrade because of our expanding family and we financed a brand new truck. When we had to look into replacing my husband’s car, we were smarter and financed a certified used car and we saved on the depreciation value as soon as you drive it off the lot, which on the truck was $10,000. I was able to pay off my husband’s car in less than one year. Plus he got a great discount because he traded in his old car that they found rust on so it was just a matter of time before that car was totaled. In hindsight I wish I would have looked at a certified used truck instead of a brand new one. But we learn from our mistakes. I’m not judging anyone for financing a new car but for us I wish I could’ve gone back and done it a little differently.

      @@HowDebbieSaves Wow interesting situation. Yes a truck new can be alot more then a Honda new. I am a believer that buying used is the way to go but not when, i at 22 years old, have the opportunity to purchase a brand new car at 4%(right near market rate) and would be the same amount financed.

    Most of the items seem more personal and specific to you than applicable general rules, but #5 and #7 are definitely super important if you want to get somewhere in life. Challenging yourself in the right way (not buying a new video game or binge watching movies all day) is very important in the long run - it's very important to understand that sooner than later!
    Learning about taxes is a must, since this what everyone will deal with annually and while it's a good idea to have someone good to do your taxes, it is as important to understand what is the good person actually does to your taxes, so you know better about your your own money management.

    Graham I see what you mean about timing the market. I get it I really do. But I ignored that advice because at the time in my neighborhood a decent home with enough space to raise a family was close to a million dollars. 850 was the median. A good amount of houses in my county were a million plus and they weren't what the average buyer would expect for a million dollar home. They were just the run of the mill 3 bed 3 bath in a good neighborhood. Now I've been trying to time the market because the only houses I could think of affording were in disrepair and the ones that were in decent shape were completely out of my price range. However as of today the median house in my county is only 680. Now owning real estate seems possible. If I wanted a property that needs work I can now buy one for 5 even high 4s. Just a year ago these same property owners were asking for 650-700. Waiting has been absolutely beneficial for me.
