    This is a compilation video of defensive actions from two-time Olympic Champion Aron Szilagyi of Hungary. It focuses on his defense in the middle and against long attacks in an attempt to provide an analysis of them.
    The fist song is "Fun Punch" by Bag Raiders and the second song is "I Sold My Bed But Not My Stereo" by Capital Cities.
    Thank you to DiscipleofCyrus Barnaby Halliwell from Great Britain for his significant contribution to this video. Follow him on Instagram @barnabyhalliwell17 and follow me @cyrusofchaos

    Szilagyi is a phenom even amongst a field of phenoms like Oh Sanguk or Gu Bongil. He's one of the greats that's for sure. Incredible fencer and such a humble and modest guy.

    All I can say is....Jesus!!
    Loved the superimposition section....really easy to see what he's doing in different actions.. Please include that in future vids.
    Would like to see some slo-mo replays of actions you're commenting on, tho....gives me a better chance to see if I can't at full speed.

      TurkeyPenRidge I'm glad you enjoyed it! I used to spend a lot of time watching videos to analyze footwork and preparations. That's why I started making compilation videos in the first place!

    Great Video!! Is Szilagyi cool with you doing this kind of video about him? Also, I like how you put in his bout against Hwang at the end. That bout deserves special analysis because Hwang was using some sort of universal mega parry to upset a lot Szilagyi's attacks.

    • @geringasG
      @geringasG 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This mega-parry is not so mysterious. On defense, Hwang's strategy was to make a bladework preparation threatening stop cut to the outside of Szilagyi's gaurd especially on Szilagyi's acceleration steps. In response Szilagyi makes the same tactical error multiple times. Szilagyi responds by cutting early with a short lunge, showing too much respect to the first intention of Hwang's threatened stop cut. You can see it's too much respect for two reasons, 1) because Hwang doesn't actually throw the stop cut into any of Szilagyi's target, 2) Szilagyi finishes out of distance where he's in range to hit at best Hwang's extended arm but not Hwang's body or mask.
      What Hwang is actually doing is called second intention. If Hwang were to really throw the stop cut to Szilagyi's wrist then one correct response from Szilagyi is the shorter attack we see. But anticipating the short attack, Hwang's correct response is to retreat hard off of the line of that attack (diagonally) getting the majority of his target out of Szilagyi's reach using distance and timing alone. Then Hwang actually only has to cover his arm when Szilagyi's attack is at its most extended position. To deflect a blade at extension it is sufficient to use only a little flick of the wrist, which is the "universal mega parry". But it's not the mega in Hwang's parry that "upsets" Szilagyi's attacks. It's really Hwang's use of the feint, it's timing, and his second intention action.
      Also I disagree with calling Hwang's tactic universal. I would say it was an uncharacteristic psychological error on Szilagyi's part that made it repeatably effective. Typically Szilagyi has shown to be more than capable of keying into a safe distance from which to build the phrase of his attack. At such range he can set up his own second intention actions that would counter Hwang's set up after seeing it once. For whatever reason, in this match, Szilagyi repeatedly became rushed into an uncomfortable distance where he gave too much respect to a second intention feint by finishing short. It was on Szilagyi to keep his mental cool and to solve the distance and the tactical problems that his opponent presented to him.

    @CyrusofChaos At 0:55 it says that szilagyi reacts after his preparation steps, do all top fencers react or do they decide on a particular action before the point begins?

    • @CyrusofChaos
      @CyrusofChaos  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Everyone both thinks about their action before the touch starts and reacts in some combination. Some people think more and some people react more but it really depends on the fencer
