Keeping a light in the tent when it is packed up makes sure you always have one at night. Gardening or mechanics gloves. With your snack bar you don't need to eat all of it in a sitting/standing, but take a bite or two and carry on. Tarp/sheet: no need for eyelets, but a button/small rock can give you a better hold with a loop on your tiedown. Reading the sky is a simple thing but others think you might be crazy till they are wet. It is the journey, not the destination is the mindset I try to give to others. Some tracks visually change even weekly.
Regarding crossing rivers. In New Zealand, if the water is discoloured and you can hear rocks rolling, don't cross or gain height and try and find a different spot. I was involved in an incident years ago where another party tried to cross exactly where the track went in with fatal consequences.
