It's refreshing to see someone so young and yet still so full of hope. My wish for you is to manage to keep it intact as long as possible here in Italy. I've lost mine a long, long time ago.

Dear Ms Britaly, you’re so right, I can’t tell!!! You don’t skim over the topics and you are able to see the complexity in the human contacts here in Sicily. I’ve lived in Catania for 8 years as a German and can confirm your point of view! Congrats to your great channel !

I describe Palermo as a big, noisy, filthy , beautiful city. Haha. We left Palermo and it's trash and went to Catania where they recycle everything and pick up garbage 6 days a week. I wish they would find the happy medium. I also wish people actually cared more about their city and it's beauty.

I'm Italian, I live in Italy. I know I'll get a lot of cri, but I could never never never live in Sicily. I feel uneasy every time I go there. I really don't understand why you decided to move there. I never would. If I were you, I would move somewhere else.

You are doing a good job Claire outside your profession. This is something to admire. Your channel is a success with your hard grind. You keep at it as you have created it and you follow your own rules as it should be. Keep at it. I know you will. As you say, you have to believe in what you are doing to make it a success. If some people are content with what they have and have no intentions to change, that is fine for them. Not my idea nor yours. I know there are many people like this and not just in Italy. The World is full. You resemble me where I have always done work and that a lot of others would never risk starting but I believed in what I started. And I have made a life of it. Not easy at the beginning and it was hard to get established but soon later it started to work and boy was I happy! It is so satisfying when you see your projects take off and work. Hard work of course but satisfying. Keep it up Claire…. Your channel is like your little baby…..

Great video. Yes it is very suffocating to try and change self identity. I believe in blending, understanding, acceptance, recognition and acknowledgement. However it becomes difficult when surrounded by arrogant individuals who are ignorant.

But of course you don’t. This is a huge cultural shift. Even within the EU Italian culture is very different and often idealized by people. When an Italian moves to England or the United States they feel just as confused and out of place as you do. People underestimate the profound differences in these cultures. It’s no one’s fault. It’s purely societal lack of education and blanketed romanticism and lack of true understanding that Italians and Sicilians are different and they are not changing the same way English and Americans are not changing to be like Italians.

Great video. I feel the same way about my life. I wished to be in Italy as I thought but I’ve learnt to be content with being a tourist and a learner of the language. As for the rubbish left everywhere, I saw a bit of this in Naples. Even in the Italian news Antenna Sicilia, I saw reports of trash 🗑️ not collected even in the heat of summer 😮😮😮😮

Like you, I say to folks that come to the US, don't give up your culture and please don't take up the bad habits we Americans have. There are quite a few that are cringe worthy. I'm fortunate because of my Italian family. Most 1st gen and they kept the Italian culture alive and my extended family does till this day. I'll be able to embrace the horror. lol

Brava. As an Englishman living for more than 30 years in south Italy I totally agree with you. I eventually got used to all the bad things (at the same time appreciating the good things ) in Italy yet remaining true to myself and my upbringing in England; respectful of others, nature, the environment etc. If in so doing I manage to teach 1 of my Italian acquaintances a more respectful attitude then great.

I agree with you but I don't understand why you'd stay then, things are simply not gonna change just because you wish them to, so might as well move on with your life instead of steadily growing a sort of contempt for the people around you.
Southern France offers a similar climate but a much more functional society, closer to the British one I imagine, I'd move there if I were you, since you're not Italian and not necessarily tied to the place in more profound manners like family and culture, as far as I know at least.

The dog issue is terrible. So many people have dogs and I see they take care with their toilet. If in Palermo the people do not take care then there is something wrong with them. Again something the people should complain about. I am sure they do but nothing gets done about it. Insistence can manage to change this. It may take time but it has to work! I remember where I lived before there was an issue with disposal of rubbish inside the city where it would get incinerated. I am talking 30 years ago. But the place was never built because of public pressure! I was in that group of complainers. It took ages but the place never got further than the plans. It did take a few years but we were all rejoicing when it got scrapped! Our Parish priest did a good job too. He was at all the meetings with the comune.

The first of the industrial Revolution started in the kingdom of the 2 Sicilies. When the north had nothing. Steam trains was Napoli. Revolutionary trains before any city in Italy. Textile industry despite Prato always having been there, was big business in the Naples district. And in other areas of Campania. The South was richer than the North then. What happened? History changed a lot of things and unification played a big part. In any case Naples has the most shops that are present World wide. I am talking clothes and fashion. In Tuscany they dream of having shops all over the world.! But they never got there. They know how to produce. Ends there! Brilliant production of course. Naples also boasts the most worldwide restaurants. Just things I know about because of my business. Massive clients
To sell to. They are gigantic and nice people. Sorry for my textile rant but I wanted to put the South on the level that it belongs through hard work and grind. With advanced ideas that have resulted in many success stories. I am sure Sicily has a lot of stories like this too. I have had contacts in Sicily that made garments that I have sold to Japan and Taiwan. All people and companies that you don’t see. They work in their work areas. You see them if you are in the textile business.

What is the governments/councils' attitude towards this? Fouling of the streets and rubbish. What laws are in place? Maybe it's a good idea to get a petition started. Approach the government because they are the governing body who should be responsible for enforcing laws for the sake of it's people and tourism. It's a shame that such a beautiful island gets a bad reputation. Thanks for sharing

Signora Claire , ☺️🌹you truly deserve loads of respect and beyond that. You have chosen southern Italy as your new home. If you would have chosen to live in Bologna , Rome , Trieste or even Milan, your life in Italy would certainly be different.
The chances to be able to integrate yourself in the southern Italy society are in comparison to the northern Italy definitely limited. Actually, just to give you an example, there are the children from people from the south Italy, who may have a great time in southern Italy, when they still go there as children. Once these children from people of southern Italian immigrants hit puberty, they already realise that the differences between northern Italy and South of Italy.
For this reason the people who were born in northern Italy as the children of southern Italian immigrants even start to go less on holiday with their parents in the south of Italy and, or once they have become adults, they even go so far not to go, not wanting to go to southern Italy at all.
So the fact that you have chosen ESPECIALLY southern Italy to be your new home, definitely represents a major challenge. Based on the information that I get from your profile here on TH-cam, you have done 👍☺️ really well so far, but the question is what else can you do?
What is realistic for you to do, if you want to go beyond that point. Integration is certainly definitely, I can say that as in Italian, who lives abroad, is certainly one sided issue, you can integrate, you can adapt yourself, as much as you want to, but people in the country, in the region, which you have chosen to live in can still, regardless of your effort, they can still and totally reject you. There's absolutely no automatism linker to that.
I admire you for having been so successful to integrate yourself in the south of Italy, but if you should reach a point where you simply say to that what's wrong with me, why can't I get beyond this point in regards of how to integrate myself in southern Italian society, there's only one answer only to this question. The answer to this question is, if you can or if you should still decide to stay in the south of Italy or, if it would be in order to avoid to go back to the United Kingdom, if you should maybe consider to simply move to the north of Italy, where the social context of Italian aspects of everyday life are definitely, certainly a lot different. More power to you, Claire!!

It must be terrible in Palermo then with this rubbish…….. it sounds terrible Claire….. I think you should all team up and do something about and create a pressure group. This is what is done in these circumstances. I know it is not good in Rome in certain areas and that has been a problem for a while. My English friend was in Rome last Saturday and he said he noticed nothing. I suppose it depends in which zone. Palermo I have no idea. WhenI live not where I have have visited including northern Campania Don’t
Have any issue with rubbish and the places are clean and have always been clean. I have to been to one place just outside Napoli and that place was dirty. No rubbish piled up but just dirty. In the next comune it was spotless. I have come across it in Milan when there were continual dustbin men Strikes years ago. Never seen it again but it lasted more than a year. Maybe a little
More. I was embarrassed to take my Japanese client to dinner every night with all that rubbish around. He came 4 times per year to Milan. I think you should put in a complaint somehow. I am sure that there are people as angry as you in Palermo. Or you can write to the Governor of Sicily. Or whatever title he has. Sicily is
an autonomous State so it sort of .governs itself more than other regions as does Südtirol.

The American social scientist Edward Banfield dubbed this phenomenon (lack of acting together for the common good) as "amoral familism"; his thesis was based on an observation of Basilicata: "a self-interested, family-centric society, which sacrificed the public good for the sake of nepotism and the immediate family" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Moral_Basis_of_a_Backward_Society

Glad you started seeing something unsual there and believe me its no just south italy its the country as whole. I grew in the north for 34 ys and i couldnt get my head around the mentality of majority . You can find the best possible way to cheat that embedded culture and it still will cause you a sort of distress that system is designed for the only ones who fully embrace it . Take it or leave it im afraid😅

Yes some people in South don't care about common area, as local governament doesn't care too. They are hopeless about things could change, they are growing in a history where every govern just pushes them without giving anything back.. And before modern times very rich families govern and decide everything, the population didn't have any power, they fight to survive.
The care of common area is very different from South to North of Italy, It's a very old story, depending from history.
But pay attention, many Sicilians are more precise and care their enviroment more than in the North. So things will change in that part of Sivily too.
If you go to the Sicilian isles younwill find a very clean enviroment force ample, people there believe more in their own power as they need to control their enviromental by themself since centuries.
