I’m a retired high school band director. My jazz band very rarely got less than a I- at festivals. But I would hate to perform after these guys. They are on a completely different level.

I’m a bari player and on a Gordon Goodwin tune we were supposed to have 4 solos, trumpet, tenor, trombone and finally me. The day of the concert all but the trombone and me chickened out last second and I was really happy cuz I got to play 32 bars solo instead of 16.
I know my high school is auditioning for ellington next year and we played solid old man to practice over the summer and I couldn’t get it close to as good as theirs was it’s crazy.
I wasn't familiar with this Ellington tune. I went back to listen to the '49 Ellington band play it. This high school band really does the tune justice. Great solos, but also really good ensemble playing. Thanks!
if anyone was wondering both tenors are playing martin committee iiis and lead alto is playing a (50s?) martin indiana and his sop sax is a 1920s martin i believe a sax section full of martins- i love to see it!

Wow! This is beyond impressive. If you look at musicians you'll generally see that the younger they are the faster and more complicated they want to play. And it isn't until 15-20 years into their career that they understand what truly makes great music. However, these guys already have it! This is the most impressive performance I've ever seen. Absolutely sublime!

The only similarity between this jazz band and my high school jazz band is that we were in high school too. These guys are outstanding.
