    Good morning Matt.Great looking bug.We have this book,going to look through it after breakfast.Bracing for the storm.Jim Cantroy from the weather channel land landed in Charlotte at 4 AM.Calling from 1 to 2 feet or more of snow.Warning of power outages are out.We have a small generator and a wood stove.Looks like several days at the bench. Take care in the storm Matt. Ken and Linda

      @SavageFlies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh my gosh, 1-2 feet of snow is no joke! Our forecast just changed to 1-2 inches on Sunday. So it looks like we're going to escape the brunt of it. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you don't lose your power. Good luck Ken and Linda!

    Yeah, you see that use of biot as a bug body a lot more out in the Rockies or the Black Hills in South Dakota, where I go quite a bit. It's actually pretty slick. That extra protection actually gives the fly a little more armor protection. Those flies can really take a beating if you hit rapids.

      Cool to hear Ryan. Maybe Sanchez was one of the folks who helped make it popular out there. :-)

    Nice fly Matt! Definitely gonna give this one a tie. I have found since tying that I really have to fight the urge to over hackle my flies when I'm tying. I'm always telling myself " just one more wrap" and it's always that one more wrap that's too many but I'm work'n on it ,lol. Take care and thanks for sharing.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do that too! Maybe it's because I've tied enough with too few hackle wraps and when I'm done I think, "Well, that looks pretty scraggly!" I guess we just keep practicing. :-)

    • @SavageFlies

      Ha! You're in for a treat Jeff... goose biots can be tricky to work with! They're slippery, you drop them all the time, and you usually have to flip one of them around to get the tips pointed away from each other. So if your first few flies with them don't look perfect, don't worry about it. You'll get the hang of working with them. :-)

    Good morning Matt. Enjoyed this mornings pattern. I will have to try this one even though it uses those biots ( we discussed this before 😀) . We are still enjoying the break from the colder temps and we are forecasted to get to 36F today. They are telling us that we will be back in the deep freeze by mid next week. It was a nice break while it’s lasted. Need another ☕️ so take care Matt. Hope the storm isn’t too bad or misses you.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Edward! I use the Hareline Touch Dub wax. It's not quite as soft as the Wapsi, which is almost like a Chapstick. But it's not as firm as the really hard stuff. I think it's a good middle ground. Here's what I use: www.tridentflyfishing.com/hareline-large-touch-dub-wax.html

    Thank you Matt for another great pattern! I like the different technique on the goose biots. I know beaded flies catch fish and help the fly to sink into the strike zone, but I always wondered why the bead doesn’t spook the fish. It just doesn’t look natural to me. Besides it’s sinking properties, do you think it is actually an attractant? Like a hot spot maybe. Can’t wait for the book review and thanks for the info on Mike Valla. Continued blessings my friend

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question Mark, and lots of folks have wondered the same thing. What a shiny bead really imitates is the air bubble so many nymphs have on them that help them rise and hatch. Of course they help the fly sink and get into the zone, but lots of naturals have a tiny air bubble that the fish will sometimes key on. But also keep this rule of thumb in mind... don't use a shiny bead unless the sun is out. If it's an overcast or cloudy day, the fish won't really see the air bubble on the naturals so a big shiny bead could spook them a little. That's when I switch to a dark bead, or no bead. And also keep in mind, toward the end of the season in heavily fished water, a lot of fish have been caught by flies with a bead so they will reject them immediately. That's when I usually try something crazy that I know they haven't seen a thousand times already that year. :-)

    • @markfritch3168
      @markfritch3168 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That makes sense. Thank you for the tips. I didn’t realize that the sun would figure into it. I watched a gal named Carol Phillips on TH-cam do a presentation to a fly club on the history of fly fishing. It was awesome. Thank you for your response.
