We were converting everything we could into fixed gears, didn't matter what. Dad's old Motobecane, mountain bikes with vertical dropouts if we could get that elusive perfect chain length. I converted my toaster to a fixed gear.
No mate don't worry fixies have actually gained popularity the past couple of years! They have a good following by 15-25 year olds in Korea, Indonesia, parts of China and parts of the USA (mostly Chicago, NYC)
