I really like how Nintendo integrated the Maw-ray into The Super Mario Bros Movie. They really know how to appeal to the fans without making it come off as forced.
From the start of being freaky in Super Mario 64 to being a unexpected Jumpscare in the Mario Movie. Maw-raw is a well known enemy throughout the Mario series.
They are called Gringills. They also traumatised me for life when I was younger lmao I had my friend grab that single star piece for me, especially while kids are watching, they were all screaming at it.
Those big, unblinking eyes. Those pointy, yet round teeth. That gaping mouth, mounted on a massive head. The most defining features of the Gringill are also the most horrifying.
I have thalassophobia, and when i saw this creature in SMG2, i try to be fast to not taken any damage. Results: now i have a big fear of video game's oceans. Obs: i was a child when i played SMG2.
I have been terrified of weird underwater creatures in video games my entire life. The ones in that first underwater level in SM64 were possibly the first water monsters I encountered in gaming. They are the reason I dreaded whenever it was time to do that level.
The Gringills make all the other ones look like plush toys. They're the reason I struggled to beat the game as a kid because they creeped me out so much.
None of them are as scary as the original Mario 64 one. It's something about the starey eyes and bright red mouth. The other ones are either creepy-cute, have a sense pf personality, or are weirdly realistic. But 64's just looks like it wants only to kill.
Mario: swims down to the Maw-Ray in the shipwreck Maw-Ray: *confused stare* What? Mario: I'd like to grab the Star that's behind you, can you move please? Maw-Ray: Yeah, sure, just stand back. *swims out, allowing Mario to go get the star*
who in nintendo think it's a good idea to make these horrible things and to make them evolve weirder an scarier after each game?! and who saw this and tell himself: the players will LOVE that! probably the type of guys who like australian spider.
I didn't realize they started calling them maw-rays! In my old SM64 guide, it was called Unagi! I love these guys even though they terrified me as a kid! 😂😂
I think the Maw-Ray in SM64 is probably the second creepiest enemy in the game behind the fucking man eating piano in level 5. Thankfully the Maw-Ray is quite sluggish and easy to avoid but it can drown you easily if you bump into it.
super mairo sunshine that part was so hard and annoying bc you have to get coins to heal and he would go down so you can not clean the teeth and it was so hard to move in the water
Super Mario Sunshine: Not a maw-ray(eely-mouth) Super Mario Galaxy: Not a maw-ray (gringill) Super Mario 3D Land: Not a maw-ray (Spike eel) New Super Mario bros u: not a maw-ray (Dragoneel)
The Mario Bros U one is not a maw-ray, is called dragon eel. Same with Eely mouth from Mario Sunshine. Spike grill from 3D land or Gringill from galaxy. This is more like an eel evolution in mario games instead of just Maw-ray
There is no way those things in 3d-land are maw-rays. There aint a shred of terror in those while the rest were actually scary or atleast somewhat off putting. They look like they're more afraid of us than anything.

@mariocooper1996,
that scene didn’t seem jump-scary, just unexpected.
@@keithtorgersen9664it scared my aunt, thats for sure
And still nobody remembers this character😭
NSMB: scary
SMG: scary
SM3DL: *duurrrrrrrrr*
SMO: scary
SMS: Thank you for cleaning our teeth :)
SM64: Nightmare Fuel
Nsmb: Sober
Smg: Crack
3d land: Weed
Smo: Sober, but 1080p
SMBM: Eats Mario & Donkey Kong
“Mur-ray”
I’m going to be honest, I had no idea what these nightmares where called before I watched this video.
Neither did I lol
Not all are maw-ray this is false information
The maw-rays from Mario Odyssey genuinely scared the living crap out of me. *I still have trauma from Super Mario Galaxy*....
Irrita y me no que me ❤❤❤
The eels in Super Mario Galaxy are actually a different species called "Gringill". Maw-Ray is also in New Super Mario Bros.
This is where the nightmares began.
Yes. 💀
Ye ur Right Mr. Mario
Yep...but the mario galaxy one is absolute terror
Never will forget how spooked as a kid I was
The one from super Mario galaxy looks so cursed
The ones in Galaxy gave me nightmares a kid, and I never wanted to do that star.
As someone who was terrified of the eel in 64 they definitely made em even more horrifying looking in Galaxy I feel for you.
It doesn't help that they are in the level that combines the water and ghost themes.
I love how over 2 decades they've always managed to make these things jus5 slightly above the right level of horrifying
I grew up with the DS and WII so a lot of these bring back great memories
GREAT MEMORIES?!?!?!?!!
The maw rays in Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 always creep me out they are terrifying
They are called Gringills. They also traumatised me for life when I was younger lmao I had my friend grab that single star piece for me, especially while kids are watching, they were all screaming at it.
When I saw it online, it freak me the freak out

What kind of drunk person made the galaxy design it’s horrifying
*Huge Nightmare Itself*

Ye it a nightmare……
imagine youre in a gigantic hole in the ocean and theres a giant eel at the bottom and youre forced to fight it
Or have to be it's dentist
Fun Fact: The Maw-Ray made a cameo appearance in the super Mario bros movie
POV: when your friend asks you what's the definition of nightmare fuel
thank god you remembered 3d land, i love that game
3d land sold very bad you’re probably talking about 3d World
@@Deadchannel42267 was Maw-Ray in World?
No
It was in 3D World and not super Mario world
@Deadchannel42267 it didn’t sell bad at all. What r u on about lol

jerk!

I like the NSMB and the SMO design 😄
the nsmb is same as sm64 ds
Bc they are both same models and same console
@@ghoull2010 thx for that
Oh common! You had to post an evolution of theses scary eels?!
The Gringills make all the other ones look like plush toys. They're the reason I struggled to beat the game as a kid because they creeped me out so much.
In super Mario 64, the eel’s name is Unagi which is the Japanese word for eel
It's the food that's grilled up with the "teriyaki" type sauce.
The guy who made the design for SMO though he was working for a Monster Hunter game
Fun Fact: Maw-Rays are called "Unagi".
Actually they are NOW called May Rays ever since Odyssey
None of them are as scary as the original Mario 64 one. It's something about the starey eyes and bright red mouth. The other ones are either creepy-cute, have a sense pf personality, or are weirdly realistic. But 64's just looks like it wants only to kill.

Maw-Ray: Yeah, sure, just stand back. *swims out, allowing Mario to go get the star*
Maw-Ray looks very drunk in 3D land
Fun fact: that enemy isn’t actually a maw-ray but is actually a relative called “spike eel”
When an eel lunges out
And takes a bite of your snout
That's a Maw-Ray!
who in nintendo think it's a good idea to make these horrible things and to make them evolve weirder an scarier after each game?!
and who saw this and tell himself: the players will LOVE that! probably the type of guys who like australian spider.
Maw-ray: becoming more realistic since 1996
3DL Maw-Ray’s the chillest guy you’ll know
OMG! The one in super mario land scared the shit out of me!
I love how 3d land just said “yeah let’s make him plump and stupid”
They should bring back the chain chomp look, I loved them
Consider yourself an opp if you weren’t scared of maw ray
Mario Oddyssey made it look so realistic 💀
And Mario Galaxy so terrifying
And Mario 3D Land so goofy
My beloved childhood nightmare
Bro turned into a eel to a dinosaur head like eel
This has been one of my nightmares for a while.
I didn't realize they started calling them maw-rays! In my old SM64 guide, it was called Unagi! I love these guys even though they terrified me as a kid! 😂😂
The only good thing about the eel battle in super Mario sunshine is the infinite water
@R Croissant lol
I love how you got all the creepy ones then there's just a derpy ass version of em in 3d Land lmao
Oh God the devil of nightmares
I hate underwater levels and this awful thing started my fears. I hate eels.
Despite all of the redesigns they are still the scariest Mario enemy
sm3l is just a thing from spore
The New Super Mario Bros one gave me vivid nightmares
Maw-ray also appears in 2023 Mario movie, please include him!❤
Even though I’m not a mario fan.. super mario sunshine and super mario 3d world were my top favorites and of course 64
This is so scary!
This is just a nightmare!
This isn't r'eel'!
I see what you did there
In New Super Mario Bros. U, those aren't Maw-Rays, they are actually called Dragoneels, which says in the title of the level.
Scariest-64
Cutest-3D land
You can also call it the eel
Well it has a real name tho?
I just called it the scary eel
I think the Maw-Ray in SM64 is probably the second creepiest enemy in the game behind the fucking man eating piano in level 5. Thankfully the Maw-Ray is quite sluggish and easy to avoid but it can drown you easily if you bump into it.
It's real name is unagi the eel accept the new super Mario bros U one because it looks like it's more related to gobblegut from Galaxy 2
In New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe that creature is not a Maw-Ray it’s Dragoneel.
The eel's name is Maw-Ray?
I think
Rorrororlrroro si sí te creo jajaja pero igual te quiero y el tuyo no es lo mejor es el tuyo pero si
@@luismedrano9237 que?
why did they change his name- 💀
(Unagi is the eel's original name btw)
Tell me another joke, Maw-Ray!
You forgot the mario kart 8 one
It's the N64 one though isn't it I can't remember as I hate that stage cause of the eel lol
Yo bois in the mario movie
And he look creepier bro
Super mario 64 music is so beautiful 😢
super mairo sunshine that part was so hard and annoying bc you have to get coins to heal and he would go down so you can not clean the teeth and it was so hard to move in the water
Tell me another joke, Maw-Ray!
Super Mario Sunshine: Not a maw-ray(eely-mouth)
Super Mario Galaxy: Not a maw-ray (gringill)
Super Mario 3D Land: Not a maw-ray (Spike eel)
New Super Mario bros u: not a maw-ray (Dragoneel)
Galaxy was the scariest by far
I play galaxy on my wii
Just imagine Mario odyssey eel coming towards you at insane speeds…
Kale Male True
Even though i am still pretty young mario 64 was my Childhood
The Mario Bros U one is not a maw-ray, is called dragon eel. Same with Eely mouth from Mario Sunshine. Spike grill from 3D land or Gringill from galaxy. This is more like an eel evolution in mario games instead of just Maw-ray
This thing scared me when I played Mario 64 💀
I don’t think 3D Land was Maw-Ray.
Y desde aquí desarrolle mi talasofobia 💀🔫
You forgot Galaxy 2
Galaxy 2's maw-ray is the exact same one from galaxy 1
that thing was the unami
*Unagi
Why nobody talks about the SMS design 💀
Smbu:thats a dragoneel
USA: Maw Ray
Japan: Unagi Eel
why does maw-ray from smg look like something from spore
I THOUGHT THE LOGO OF THIS VIDEO WAS FUNNY!. THE 2ND WORM IMAGE THING WITH BIG EYES!.

Yes it is an eel
"new super mario bros u" but its the switch version

The one in Galaxy looks English
My least favorite Mario enemy. I hate these guys
That poor DS game's 2D visuals did NOT age well. It looks like a flash game.
I Wonder. What are this bouncy thing in New Super Mario Bros, Maw Ray eggs ?
Not all are called maw-rays, the one in 64 is unagi and the one in odyssey is the only one in this video that is maw-raw
Galaxy is scary I like ds
Eely Mouth is not actually the same like Maw Ray (or big Unagi). Is totally different so that doesn't count. Seriously.
SM64: terrifying
He also came in the movie
I love eels but damn some of these are creepy
Galaxy version is the worst design ever 😱😱😱
Odjfkcuif
Is it maw-ray or Unagi?
Mario 3D Land Real is so cute
EEL
I’m going back
Unagi isn't Mawray
Why doed 3d land have the goofiest eel
i only ever found the maw rays in smo to be annoying
they never scared me
for every other game
*i never played them up to that point*
the maw-ray does NOT appear in sunshine, galaxy, u, or 3d land
sunshine is eely-mouth
galaxy is gringill
3d land is spike eel
and u is dragoneel
Imo, their redesign in odyssey is too realistic
Holy S●●t!
