- A short Test I made for film school back in 2016 with the Arriflex SR3. Shot on Super 16mm (Kodak Vision 3 500T).
Lenses: Zeiss Super Speed T1.3 // 9.5mm, 12mm, 16mm, 50mm
Tripod: Sachtler 25P, ABA Dolly: "Billy"
Edited in FCPX, graded in Davinci Resolve. Upscaled to 4k for better TH-cam Compression.

Absolutely stunning, the softness of the super speeds mixed with the 500T just blows me away. My favorite film stock and some of my favorite lenses. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! But honestly I don't think "softness" is the right attribute when describing super speeds, they are actually very sharp from 2.8 upwards. I guess the softness just comes from the 16mm negative.
@@janisbrod This is the first time I ever read\heard somebody referring to Zeiss glass as "soft". Zeiss lenses (no matter if they are photo or cine lenses) are always sharp - in some cases excessively so (CP3s come to mind). If there's a sense of softness in this (very good-looking, BTW) footage, it's because it was shot on 16mm film.
1:37 this is such an amazing shot! I dream of making films this good looking with 16mm. Praise this video!

Wonderful! Isn't the KV3 500T tungsten balanced? Did you use any filters or color correction? I love the color.
Yes, I used a 85 daylight correction filter. But if you get a good scan you can also just correct it in post.
@@janisbrod You must've used ND's as well right? 500T in bright sunlight is super sensitive.
@@domgrimard2088 Of course. I can't think of any shoot that I'd go to without any ND's. ;)

Thank you! :) yes I used an 85 filter - but to be honest it wouldn‘t have been necessary with the quality of the Arriscan. If you can get a good quality scan, you can just adjust the white balance in post.

@@Twisted_Sound I don’t have experience with that but as long as you can get a flat 2k ProRes (or similar) out of it, you should be fine.

I'm pretty sure it was developed at Andec in Berlin. The scan was made at my school though, so that's not available for public. I'm afraid I'm not the best person to ask for advice, I can only say that I've heard the scans at Andec are supposed to be pretty bad - for developing it's fine though!

I did use an 85 filter. But a friend of mine just corrected the WB in post for his test and it turned out just fine! As long as you can get a high quality flat scan, you should be safe!

Im a total beginner, so i wanted to ask, why did you choose 500T for the daylight situation, was it the grain you were looking for? Did you use any ND and warm filters or was the warm tone on post? This looks gorgeous and some closeups of the model reminded me of Naomi Watts in Mulholland Drive, except, MD has different color grade, but this has the soul of it. Perhaps in the model's expression and hairstyle and these locations.
Thanks! The film stock was given - I'd usually rather use 250D for a scene like this. For sure I used ND filters. And I also used an 85 orange filter to convert the film stock from tungsten to daylight white balance. But you could also just do that in post if you get a high quality scan.
@@janisbrod Thanks. Sorry one more question. Its actually helping me understand so i can do that when i shoot super8 and 16mm for the first time. How did you get the perfect exposure while using an ND, since there's no LCD preview. How would i calculate the setting if i wanted the aperture open for bokeh, for example
@@DethronerX Depending on your light meter (I have the Sekonic 558), you can either dial in the ND filter that you're using or you just calculate. For example, if your light meter shows that you should use f/11 but you want shallow depth of field, you just go down as many stops as you want to your desired aperture (--> f/8, f/5.6, f/4, f/2.8 = 4 stops) and add that as ND (4 stops would be an ND 1.2). It's a little confusing at first and I'll honestly never understand why ND filters don't just say the stops that they're taking away (like "1" or "2") but instead have these confusing "0.3" steps. But you'll get a hold of it quickly.
@@DethronerX One thing that definitely doesn't work well with film are variable ND filters, since they don't really tell you what stop they're on.
@@janisbrodwow thanks yeah that helps understand but those numbers are definitely confusing. I might have to practice on digital first. Do you think if i used the film cameras lens (example k3) on digital with nd and set the exposure, mark it and then add back to K3, would that work? I only have a variable ND but i might get fixed stop one(s) if i know what i need. For example, on K3, its own zoom or hellios 44-2 with anamorphic and ND. Will the exposure of this be the same on k3 as on canon 60D. I don't have to and i won't use ND the first time but later after practical experience i would want to try for shallow DOF for some closeups

Sorry, I don't remember. I think it was a Sachtler Video 25... It was definitely 15mm rods.

i feel like kind of an idiot asking this... but what does aba dolly mean... im assuming you couldnt haul a dolly out to this location for the budget of a school film, so how did you get the dollies so smooth? is this some kind of dolly that im unaware of? im sry if its a stupid question haha
It's basically a skater dolly. The rails are just foldable aluminum tubes and the camera tripod stands on a platform with wheels that roll on said tubes.

Hello, what setup was used- 24/180' ; 25/172,8' or something else?
It was 24 / 172.8" - but at these conditions with only natural light, it doesn't really matter.
Set up of what?
