Narasimha Rao was a Socialist and MMS also was not a Capitalist but in 1991 there was no other option left other than LPG. It was not their vision instead, it was helplessness.
Like Venezuela is forced to allow private companies in Jan 2021, India was forced to adopt half-hearted LPG in 1991.

@@krishnomanob Blaming Churchill for the Bengal famine is like Blaming Modi for the Kutch Earthquake. I have read enough on Bengal famine to come to the following conclusions that would explain what actually caused the death of three million Bengalis.
1: A large Section of Bengali Society for Centuries have been living on the edge of Starvation. The Region of Bengal was for a very long time, among the poorest in Subcontinent on per capita terms.
2: Every year it produced just about enough to feed its large population and in case of a short fall in any year, It would Import from the neighbouring Burma.
3: In the year 1943 the region of Bengal witnessed one of the worst cyclones of the century killing more than 14000 people and destroying the paddy crop. Simultaneously there was an outbreak of a fungal disease that took a heavy toll on the remaining paddy crop.
      4. As a result, the local grain traders and merchants engaged in a massive hoarding which went unpunished because of connivance of the local administration. This caused an acute shortage of Bengal's staple food, Rice.
      5. Remember it was a period when the World War 2 was in its full swing and the Japanese had already occupied Burma, shutting its trade with Bengal. As a Result, no Rice could be imported from Burma.
      6. People had already started dying of Starvation when the London received the News of famine. Churchill at first was indifferent to it, being preoccupied with the war that was in a critical phase. His attitude of indifference also had something to do with his Racist and Xenophobic opinion of Bengalis who he believed bred like Rats causing the recurring scarcity of Grains. But in the end he got his head around the severity of the crisis and went out of his way to get Australia to send shipments of grain overlooking the margin of safety for their own wartime supplies and also sent Archibald Percival Wavell, a senior British Army officer as the new governor general of British India specifically with the brief of bringing the famine to an end. Wavell being a competent administrator began his rescue work by diverting troops and military vehicles from the British Indian Army at the height of World War 2 to fetch Rice from Surplus states like Andhra and Tamilnadu to Bengal and thus putting an end to the miseries of Bengalis.
Any unbiased student of History would not do the mistake of blaming Churchill for the Bengal famine but would in fact credit him for brining it to an end but Since majority of the Indians are ignorant and want to virtue signal on colonialism et al, would rather spew rank ignorance on the issue.

Shekhar ji, I am a regular follower of your programs. This has been one of the best program of yours. You have shown that you not only understand politics, but economics also. You are right in saying that UPS 2, led by Sonia Gandhi (not Manmohan Singh), changed its route to absolute socialism. After all, Sonia Gandhi also seems to believe that India cannot grow by more than 3 1/2 percent per annum, and all her policies were aiming to bring down India's growth to that level. She also likes sycophants, which is the reason that many small leaders in the government dared to do whatever they wanted, and Prime Minister MMS was reduced to a meek spectator. You righty say that UPA 1 rided for some years on Vajpayee Govt's reforms. But no one gives credit to Vajpayee. Rather everyone talks about MMS for his successful tenure during UPA 1. AB Vajpayee was quite insightful in not just national/ international affairs, but also economic affairs. He had successfully controlled not just the inflation, but also the deep slowdown of 2001-02. India was among the first economies in the world to start showing signs of revival in 2003.

There weren't any socialist examples when Adam Smith wrote his book so I'm assuming you found this quote on the internet without fact-checking.
Here's one from Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments (note the socialist quality implied in the words):
When the happiness or misery of others depends in any respect upon our conduct, we dare not, as self-love might suggest to us, prefer the interest of one to that of many. The man within immediately calls to us, that we value ourselves too much and other people too little, and that, by doing so, we render ourselves the proper object of the contempt and indignation of our brethren.
The world is much more complex that perceiving it through a black-white frame.
