This is the song that established Bobby as a solo artist after being removed from New Edition. People recognize him as a great singer and dancer but his rapping is underrated. Check out when he played "5 Fingers of Death" on Sway's Universe a couple of years ago. He can freestyle with the best of them!

  • @Gotee71

Yes, Bobby did popularize the singing and rapping in a song. Pop/Top 40 stations in the 80's didn't play rap (at least in the area I lived at the time). This song became a pop hit in 1988 and at first they played the song without his rap. After some weeks they stared to play the song with the rap. It went to number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts.

Your guess was right, it’s Babyface & LA Reid on the production. This came out in 1988, while Run DMC had early 80’s flows, so whoever wrote Bobby’s rhymes would’ve made them sound more modern.

    • @bolder2009

In 1988 the biggest music stars on the planet were Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, George Michael and Madonna. Bobby was the biggest R&B star of 1988/89 with the Don't Be Cruel album, but internationally it was MJ, Whitney, George Michael and Madonna. Terence Trent D'Arby wasn't too far behind off the back of Introducing The Hardline..., but George's Faith album was the biggest blockbuster album after MJ's Bad (both released in 1987). MJ and George dominated 1987/88 domestically and internationally. Then Janet came through with RN1814 in 89 which was a game changer and dominated the industry from 1989/90. Madonna's Like A Prayer album also dropped in 89 and was huge. I remember that time in music. So much incredible music that you didn't have to search for. Prince was still at the cutting edge and on his incredible run of albums from Dirty Mind to Batman. I can't put into words how great an era it was for music.

    @beyondthepage9389 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

OK Jack here's another lesson for you. Bobby Brown was the first R&B artist to both sing and rap on his songs (as you quite rightly noted). About five years later (1993) rap group "The Lords of the Underground" released their debut album.. "Here comes the Lords" which featured a track that spoke about this trend that Bobby brown had started of have rap solos on his record. The Lords Of the Underground track is called "What's Going On".. and goes as follows...
"What's going on, what's going on, everybody's gotta have a rap in their song.."
..because by 1993 it was almost obligatory for R&B songs to have a rap solo. I for one can say that it was often the raps solo section that I like the most. (check out Keith Sweat's 1993 hit .. "I Want Her" featuring.. Lisa Left Eye Lopez of TLC. It's a typical slick 90's style video that has Lisa Left Eye Lopez rap solo drop right at the end, and is just the best ever (Check it out ).. th-cam.com/video/oqt-gbATwY0/w-d-xo.html).
Before Don't Be Cruel (which was Bobby Browns breakout song) R&B be and Hip Hop rode in separate lanes. For example during this period it was all too common to hear people (black people) into R&B, express a dislike for Hip Hop. Strange you might think but true nonetheless. Can you imagine anyone today saying.. "I love R&B but I'm not into Hip Hop." The two are so interconnected that it wouldn't make any sense.
The thing that needs to be pointed out is that Hip Hop in 1987 (though starting to gain a lot of mainstream traction) was still very much on the come up, so only teenagers (and maybe those in their early to mid 20's) would have been heavily into it. Bobby Brown and Teddy Riley were both teenagers at the time so trying to bridge the divide would have seemed like an exciting challenge (and the obvious thing to do going forward).
That's effectively what New Jacks Swing was all about, Hip Hop loving kids wanting to fuse their love for this new and exciting musical artform with their love for the R&B standards their parents first introduced them to. However, Bobby Browns way of doing both the singing and rapping did not catch on 🤷🏽‍♂️. Instead rappers were brought in, which is what kickstarting the R&B and Hip Hop collaboration thing that is so prevalent today. I think this has a lot to do with what I mentioned before about the Hip Hop generation being much younger. Bobby Brown was a teenager so singing and rapping was what he knew where as most of the established R&B artist of the day would have been 5 and 10 years older, probably feeling a little too old to try to suddenly come off as rappers. Getting a young emerging rapper with Hip Hop swag (which was different to R&B at the time) would have been easier and make it more appealing to the ever expanding Hip Hop market very much on course to concur the world.
I hope that wasn't to much for you.

You should see him as a kid when he was with New Edition. Start of with Candy Girl or Mr. Telephone Man.

L.A. and Babyface were the producers of this hit. LA & Babyface were members of The Deele, who sang Two Occasions.

🗣️ I'm late Jack but this & Every Little Step were produced by Baby Face & LA Reid, most of this Album was half LaFace Records & Teddy Riley the other portion.

Ralph Tresvant (New Edition) sang a lot of Bobby parts on Every Little Step that's why it may sound a bit different...a little known industry secret.

Late to the game on this on jack..but go reaction fun fact when this came out in"88"..I was 17yrd it was the thing back then..it was a big roomer..that this song was based on his crush on janet jackson they did not date but when he was in California producing his first album...and the record company rented him a house rite next door too janet Jackson...but she politely rejected him...Jack you news too check out his very first solo album it features "girl next door"..that song his base on his crush on Janet Jackson as well and "girlfriend"..his voice is soo smooth and very high pitched...check it out.

If you like 80's music and enjoy Bobby Brown you should check out the group New Edition....Bobby Brown was part of that group in the early to mid 80's. Bobby went on to be a single artist, and the other guys formed BBD..Bell, Biv, Devoe...( check them out too!!!!)
And as always another great reaction video! Thanx. :)

Remember that all the women you say are fine in video's from the 80's to early 90's are in there late 40's to mid 50's and some could be grandma's.
