    Tip: after you finish clipping get a body brush or any soft brush and flick of all the loose hair so your horse doesn't get itchy or even give them a wash if its not to cold hope this helped someone keep their horse from scratching themselves too much 🐎💜

    my horse will turn the barn into dust whenever she sees a clipper intended for horses so I got a large dog trimmer instead, it's not as heavy, won't make your hand go numb from vibrating, barely gets warm (nowhere near hot), your ears still work after 45 minutes of clipping, it only cost half of what a horse clipper costs and my not so stroppy mare doesn't move a muscle when being clipped. Perfect for when you've only got one horse

    Why do people clip horses? I'm new to horse riding and I've seen so many clipping videos around. Also could you do a video on how to position yourself in a canter? I've searched it but didn't come across much. I love your videos they're really helpful!

    • @Emma-sr2vc
      @Emma-sr2vc 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      In the winter the horses fur grows thicker and longer so if they are working hard they will sweat a lot and then possibly get ill from being wet in the cold weather, so they clip them to prevent the sweat and use rugs in the stable to keep them warm. During canter you just sit the same as all the other paces, sit up straight, look ahead and only turn your head and shoulders around corners do not lean your whole body or the saddle may slip off, I'm guilty of that! I hope I helped you out!

    Thanks SO much for doing this, I feel more confident about how to go about clipping my horse now. Couple questions- what clippers would you reccommend for someone only clipping 1-2 horses per winter, and what size of blade would you use? Also, is there any point where it's "too late" to clip them, because it could affect the growth of their hair in the spring?
    Thanks!

  • @sorennilsson9742
    @sorennilsson9742 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The area of the horse that you chose to take away the hair from alters acording to how cold it is where you live. In cold climate it is not a good idea to shorten the hair under the horse since it is close to impossible to cover that area with any form of protection. It is also important that hair is regrown when summer and insects come.

    Clipper coolant works well, it's just that it's a know carcinogen. The best thing to do is to have 2 blades and a ceramic tile, after 10 or so minutes, take on blade off, partially slide out the blade inside, brush it off and oil as necessary. That way there is no potential for running the clipper, the blade or harming your horse.

    I would start slow, making sure the horse is okay with the clippers around the rest of their body, then bringing the turned off clippers and touching their face and ears with it. I like to put earplugs in their ears so wayward hairs don't get into their ear canal and the sound is lessened.

      +S&L Eventing Sisters I know this was 9 months ago but I would start by turning on a small pair of cheap trimmers and leave them outside or inside the stable to get them used to the noise. Then use the same trimmers to touch the horse with when they are on and off.

      Yes but they dry so much faster without all that winter coat, especially if you have a furry beast like I do! Of course it is important to keep a clipped horse in a sheet and/or blanket depending on your location.

    • @BlackMountain150
      @BlackMountain150 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Zoawesomeshowjumper You can, but it isn't recommended to do it over the summer months or past February as it interferes with the summer coat, however it is more of a guideline, if your horse gets really hot still, you can continue to clip all year round.

      If you keep the skin taught by gently pulling down while you shave up you are less likely to hurt the animal and there are guards you can use if you use a pet/dog clipper. Pet clippers made for smaller animals are quiet and lighter too.

      They sweat mostly on their chest and neck and it helps them dry faster and won’t result in a matted, sweaty, winter coat

  • @bookworm2653
    @bookworm2653 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Why would you clip a horse in winter? They need that hair to keep warm.

    • @jasminem.3528
      @jasminem.3528 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Horses grow thick coats and their skin produces more grease in winter to help protect them against wet and cold weather. These assets are great for keeping the horse naturally warm, but they make it difficult and even unhealthy if the horse is worked regularly to the point of perspiring. Sweat mixes with the grease in the coat to create a film that mats the thick hair. The thick coat is slow to dry, and it can't keep a horse warm in this matted state, leaving the horse vulnerable to chills that lead can to illness. That's why almost everyone uses a blanket.

    why does a horse need a winter clip ?

    • @equine_.lindsey5236
      @equine_.lindsey5236 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you ride in the winter and your horse gets sweaty, it takes way too long to dry and can make your horse sick if you turn him out or even if you keep him inside. Also is you show in the winter it looks way nicer than a shaggy pony.

    • @ThePrincessPoison

      You should... It's for their own benefit. They would sweat so much being worked during the winter, and it wouldn't dry, so they would get sick.

      @Loganluva 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For horses that are being worked in colder climates they can easily get sweaty under a heavy winter coat. It takes the horses longer to cool down after a ride and if they are put away warm and wet they could get sick. The parts clipped in the video are the main areas horses sweat so they rest of the hair is kept to let the horses keep some warmth. Also many people do full body clips to help keep the horses clean throughout the winter especially if they plan to show.

      I did it with my old horse :P except he was in lots of work so we did a full clip but left a shooting star unclipped on his rump, I also do eventing so it didn't matter but you probably shouldn't if you do say hunters because you can still see the lines for quite a while because a lot of the time as the hair grows back it is a slightly different colour. (will go away a little while after it has grown back it is not permanent dont worry haha)

      +Malak Amir you don't have to per say, some people do it because they work there horses consistently over the winter and want them to stay dry and cool. others don't want there horse to grow a coat so they clip and blanket. Others do it for showing.

      Lacey Bryan I think it is because sometimes the horses winter coat can be to thick to work in and they get sweaty and when they get sweaty it makes them cold ☺️

      If your horse gets super sweaty with a full coat, then they will take forever to dry in cold weather. They will get very sick.
