If I remembered correctly in the floppy version, when you're wearing the santa suit, the "cookie" says "Hi, beware of dark squares." That pretty much means the statue is triggered when you step on a dark checkered square in its line of sight...

I don't understand the AI in this game. They act in bizarre ways, you never have any idea what they're even doing.
