Just some FYI for anyone new viewing this: It's off his "Orphans" album. The kids in the video, peeking through the window, are his children. This was a documentary shot at his home.
The song is the same, but the version on 'Orphans' is different, it has handclaps, backing vocals, and sounds like it has been compressed and tweaked in the studio. For the 'complete'ists' out there.
So glad I got to see some live footage of him recording this. I've been attempting to cover this for years. He is without a doubt my favorite singer and writer of all time. Thank you, Sir.
I remember this clip from, like, 11 years ago. That was the first time I heard of Tom Waits, and it captivated me right away. Then I began listening to him I discovered both the music - especially Alice and his "Closing Time" album as well as the movies he starred in. Seven Psycopaths will always be my favourite amongst the ones he starred in. Thank you for uploading it and make me travel down Memory Lane.
My personal favorite of the films has got to be _Down By Law..._ not only is it his only starring role, it's Jim Jarmusch's masterpiece. And it also features John Lurie and Roberto Benigni! 🥰 What's not to love?!?
100% militant atheist here. And this is an absolute gem. Tom is a living legend. I've been following his work since about 1975. What a ride! Thanks Tom. ❤
That laugh at the end kills me 😂😂 I think he's laughing at how long it took him to break that last note 😅 CLASS....well...either that or the kids spying on him 😂
I get a kick out of the goofy fundamentalist atheists breathlessly reassuring the faithful that Mr. Waits is only singing from the perspective of a character. “Rest easy! We’ve peered into the depths of Mr. Waits’s soul and found not a trace of hope in God!”
Like a method actor, Waits takes on a persona and inhabits that character when writing and performing songs. It's a finely crafted act. Were you disappointed to learn De Niro and Pacino weren't really gangsters, or Depp isn't a pirate?
You're a fucking idiot. Tom Waits sings about religion all the time. But he does it from the perspective of a character, like all of his songs. It's a character study. A brainlet like you can't appreciate that, I guess

That adds crucial context! Thanks for the background!

I should have said that Mr. Waits is on another version of this great old gospel song, on John Hammonds album 'Wicked Grin'.
Yay Tom Waites. One of the greatest songwriters-singers of all time. A range from the brutal to the infinitely tender.
This Dude and Willie Nelson are two treasures! I hope they receive my love now while they are with us!

Poet and composer ;)
Mine too!
He has slowly become one of my favorite singer/songwriter/poet/whatever for a while now. His music puts me at ease
You should do it dude! Cover the song, is a good song
The best artist, songwrighter and story teller ever to be.-
Hear, hear! 🙏
He's both God and man.
Tom has timeless music, not restricted to any decade or era
or dogma
I got to see him in 2006 in Atlanta. I'm old now, and live in the middle of nowhere. I'm glad I got to see him when.
Was that the Tabernacle show? I was there. Fantastic.
He is one of a kind! The good kind.
I really wish there were more raw footage songs like this from mt Waits
Tom is the only man who can get me singing a hymn like an old man in church
tom waits in the darkness with me when im alone
Still one of my favourite live performances from Tom Waits. Brilliant.
WE LOVE YOU TOM. 💜💜💥💥😎😎😘🤗. Thank you. 😍 Awesome.
Never knew this song. Thank you for sharing it. I feel like i needed it and it was fate.
Shit, I didn't even know this record existed🙃
Just that ! Thanks Tom
Pure raw emotion. Misery, suffering, grief, and hope.
Thanks Paul for pointing me in Tom Waits direction. Indianapolis Post Office

Where can I see the full doc??
Would love to find it too
All I can say is that the undertiltles are in dutch; the whole thing must be out there for american viewers.
@@SubZeroCommander it says in the notes above that it’s an Irish documentary. Interesting that the subtitles are in Dutch.
🙂.
I wonder if the late
Joe Cocker would have been a fan if this rendition.

Amen, It's quite sad isn't it.
when i learned how he pretends to be a hobo and puts on the fake voice i lost all interest in him

Don't mind the song style Tom but Religion really Tom , I thought you were a grown Man... very disappointed you've got the usa baby vibe...
Fuck off clown. Don't watch it and go back to your kid rappist priest
It's a song he wrote in the style of a Leadbelly song.

You clearly haven’t listened to enough TW to get it. Every song is a hymn.
"Religion" may be something different than what you understand it to be.
Great
