My personal favorite of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.. The irony and delivery of the lyrics matched with a superbly talented band makes this a musical masterpiece. Didn't realize the depth that this man's music had on my memories, good and bad, until he was gone. Tom will never die. As long as I am alive, other people will will be introduced to his music. Please do the same if you agree.
Tom Petty was great for a very long time, going all the way back to the 1970's, but unlike a lot of musicians who are good in one era, Tom continually got better every decade. In the 1990's he was huge because instead of him trying to fit into the era, the world finally caught up to him. Man, he is missed.
In this song, Tom shows us a special secret, a special skill that many people have. Check out the singular people in the video; you can call 'em weirdos, but in THEIR minds they're all KINGS. As he says in the song, it's a place in his mind that he goes to. I like a lot of his songs, but this one is special. It's important that I can go to that place, so I can be King, since it seems that Darwin doesn't get to choose, so much, anymore. Watch the end of the video. Fortune passes everywhere.
Bring a serious sound system to truly enjoy this like it should be. A lot of nuances you'll never hear with headphones or Bluetooth speakers. When I listen to this, the whole damn block does too 😁
3:55 mark for me, beginning of the outro...that gentle piano rumble with the strings joining. Sounds like distant thunder and it's kind of transportive if I'm honest. Love you Tom.
"Now he belongs to the ages." Lord knows we lost one America's most prolific and brilliant singer-songwriters and real deal performers. I lived in Gainesville FL on the same street as Tom's Dad Norm who kept a beat up old pickup out back that Tom used when he was visiting or playing his hometown. I saw that the truck was gone a few times and wished that I could at least get a glimpse of this amazing, Iconic American Rock Artists. That never happened, however, wishes can come true and with more than you wished for. My older brother is singer/songwriter and attended U.F. Tom Petty surpased the university for bringing Gainesville to life. It was a combination of seeing my bro play clubs like "Mad Monks" and "The Alibi" with beautiful women all around and Petty's popularity that inspired me to become a professional singer, songwriter, performer & Producer. Tom was playing in his hometown once while I was living there in 1994 and we tried very hard to get tickets but couldn't. The night after his big hometown show, I was playing at a little Italian place, I think it was called Nepalitano's. After playing my last song of the night people close to the stage were talking with me and I had to pee like a racehorse. When I finally broke away and headed for the restroom, I past a dark corner where I could just make out shadows from which I heard "sounded really good man." After a quick "thanks" in the mens room I was thinking "I know that voice" but couldn't place it. So on my way back out I took a good look and said thanks again. "You want to join us for a beer," sure I said just as I realized it was Tom Petty. I spent about an hour with him and someone from his road crew talking about music - precious moments I'll never forget. I'm very, very lucky and thankful to have kicked a few back with an idol and major influence on my life and career-~~~~~Peace be with you Tom, thanks for the treasure of brilliant music you've left us and for an hour I'll cherish until I pass - when I hope to kick a few more back with you....

Wow what a great story. You were really fortunate to spend an hour with such a legend. I was lucky enough to see him in concert twice. Once with The Heartbreakers and again on a solo tour. He was great each time. Flawless musicianship and the guy had a down to earth charisma that was just amazing. R.I.P. Tom wherever you are, you are a true legend to us millions of fans.

Every man has an "empty box" in their minds where they like to go from time to time. It's the place of absolute peace and quiet; it's the time when a man's eyes become sort of glazed and they're just absent from the moment and time. No woman has ever understood this and probably never will. I always feel, when listening to this song, that it's exactly what this song is all about. It's good to be king, if just for a while. Cheers, Tom Petty.

I was at the rock n roll hall of fame last week. They have an awesome Tom Petty display there. He had both sides of a hallway and was one of the larger displays I saw that day. It was moving to see his hand written lyrics to several songs including my favorite, this one! They also had a flannel shirt and pair of jeans that he wore on the cover of the Rolling Stone. My gosh that's so beautiful but so sad. I didn't realize how handsome Tom Petty really was. He's so gorgeous and serious performing that song. I miss him.
Always thought the end had an effect on Me... Like the seemingly Homeless Guy Goes back to a Place He once Lived to Get Something that Meant, A better time...a better Place. And the Stricken Look on His Face. Powerful
I LOVE Tom's voice! I have heard his voice since I was 5! I am 45 today and I would love to hear his voice forever and ever! Tom has that voice that just calms your spirit! RIP to the Greatest Legend of All Time!!! I love you Tom!!!
First cassette I ever owned. Greatest hits. Wore that suckered out. Know every song by heart. And sing my lungs out when nobody is watching hah. His legacy will forever live on. RIP Petty. You made my childhood a little better and millions of others.
This song is meant to be ironic. In your imagination you can be King. You can dress as one & play the part. Many real Kings do. It is a satirical song and an analytical masterpiece.
The music that Tom Petty has made over the years is quintessentially for everyone! This beautiful man is going to be missed forever. He gave us all so much and I will always carry him in my heart. RIP Tom, you were king!
The other day I was driving back to my home and this song came on the radio and for some reason it really shock me up, I cant believe he is gone, sadly missed, RIP
One My all time favorites ..Tom petty and the Heart breakers the put on the best live shows.I cried when I heard he had passed .That part of my youth I will never get back..Selfish I know but man I was happy ..RIP Tom ..Bless your friends and loved ones you left behind.
I was doing the "jam by the campfire" thing (>200 attendees), and I played this song. The response was like NOTHING I've seen in my professional career. Sometimes the shovel IS the spade. Tom Petty was a songwriter...
This song came on (without me turning it on) my phone pandora app before I went to sleep during Hurricane last night. Thank you, Tom were ok here in Fla your hometown is safe. ♥♥

My gosh that's so beautiful but so sad. I didn't realize how handsome Tom Petty really was. He's so gorgeous and serious performing that song. I miss him.
Check him out in "You Don't Know How it Feels....." those eyes....
Christ being the ultimate King. Petty had it right.
this makes me miss the old days music sucks so bad now, is it so hard to sing from the soul
😀Yes!😃
how did I forget about this GEM ?
They can burn his house. They cannot burn his music or his memory. He was King. Our king.x
Always thought the end had an effect on Me... Like the seemingly Homeless Guy Goes back to a Place He once Lived to Get Something that Meant, A better time...a better Place. And the Stricken Look on His Face. Powerful
Brilliant apocalyptic video from the Master, Tom Petty.
One of my favorite songs, ever. Even better live!
I LOVE Tom's voice! I have heard his voice since I was 5! I am 45 today and I would love to hear his voice forever and ever! Tom has that voice that just calms your spirit! RIP to the Greatest Legend of All Time!!! I love you Tom!!!
The end of this song is haunting.
It's the best
Can I help it if I still dream from time to time. Thank you Tom P!!!!!
RIP to one of the Kings of music. Love and respect.
This song is about drugs, thats how i took it and relate too anyway.
I take it as knowing your place in the world while retaining your dignity.
Songs about the environment. And whats gonna be left of it for our kids if we don't take care of it.
Maybe. I think this like any other great song is intentionally left to the listeners' interpretations. Everyone thinks of something else...
this song is about whales and how they relate to sealife while being mammals..
When Tom passed it felt like my heart was ripped out of chest cavity. I loved when he played himself in Kevin Costner movie the postman. RIP
another star is chaining in the sky for all of us u are immortal u never be forgotten
Always and 4ever Tom.p
Xx
Amazing song writer. Sooo glad I saw him live. One of the best concerts I ever attended.
My all time favourite petty song.
Taken from the wild flowers album.
