Our life would be so much easier if stores would sell 10-20 colors only. When I see that there is like 30 shades of plain white, I give up and build a pool instead.

Yes. Yes. Yes. I gave up long ago and decided to leave it the way it is. Ie.,Builder's white. It has been 20 years now. I went ahead and built a greenhouse shed and dug a koi pond instead 😁

You have no idea how much time I have spent looking at the 40 different shades of white finding exactly the right one- usually a cool blue based white for walls with a warmer white for cabinets. There is a reason!

My wife and I usually don't agree on color choices - however - when getting ready to paint the house interior we came across a color palette that we both liked! We wanted to go with some walls one color and other adjoining walls and rooms another color etc. The store had a suggested color card with a slate blue, pale green and butter cream which had been selected by a designer which were in the same "palette" and hence went perfectly together! Most importantly "we" liked the color combination, immediately got the paint and got painting. Thanks for your advice, keep producing videos and stay safe!

the same card is all the same color with different shades. it's called a monochrome scheme, and it's one very specific look for a house. most people want some variety, so you have to pair and compliment with other colors on other cards.

I went to a 'big box hardware' store with a swatch of blue (from my sofa) - used their book to find the complimentary green - then had just a hint of that green added to white for my walls. really looks great! in most light the walls look white but when the sun moves during the day it picks up the green - which makes the natural wood and plants look great too. Point being - use the books for complimentary colors but don't be afraid to dilute the colors with white to get a softer (almost invisible) hue.

I used to have a lady pick the paint for our homes. She would use those sheets and our homes always looked fabulous. The lightest color was always for the ceiling and trim. We never had a “white” ceiling. The second lightest was for the closets, the third was for hallways and bathrooms. The darkest we used for accent walls.

Light can also affect the way you see colour, whether it's natural light, fluorescent, Incandescent or led (cool white, neutral white). Artificial lights project different wavelengths which can result in a colour that looks different. Awesome Vid Jeff, keep it up!

Also pro tip, when looking at paint chips at the store, move up and down in the same row, not side to side (one row left or right can be okay).

Love it!!!! I also love sherwin williams and part of the reason why is they put awesome freebie flyers every year, stocked at Lowes, but also at their much more knowledge SW stores. What I love about their " color collections" is it takes the guess work out of what goes together. I've remodelled 3 rooms in our house (plus exterior color changes based on their free flyer collections..) people think I do interior design for a living!!😂 Again, take SW free flyers and study color like it's the best thing that ever happened to you!!! Colors I didn't think went together actually can if you add in the right mediator/diplomat color (beige or taupe) Have fun painting!!!!

Just go to a real local paint store (not the big-box guys) and they usually have a color consultant who will advise you. Bring in samples of the colors you like or want it to go with (flooring, counters, etc) and they will give you an expert opinion. I did this when I completely renovated the kitchen in my old house and I got tons of compliments.

Important info for picking out exterior colors. Only stay with three shades on the same strip (unless you have historical or style sensitive) Too many colors are a mistake. Also get little samples and look at them different times of the day. The sun will give a blue tint to everything, and will affect the color depending on what direction your house faces. Learn about warm vs, cool colors. Consider your roof color. Consider other houses in the neighborhood. Get new outdoor light fixtures when you paint. A little time and patience goes a long way.

If you have a color you really love, use it as a base formula. More pigment can be added for a deeper, richer color. Less pigment can be used for a lighter, softer shade. Example:
    Most walls-favorite color
    Accent wall-add 25-50% pigment
    Ceiling-subtract 25-50% pigment
    Trim-subtract 75-90% pigment

I used to make paint at Lowe's in between jobs and we had a scanner that we used to create pigment formula for paints from a piece of clothing, a towel, or whatever and even though we weren't technically allowed we could do the same thing with stain just need to adjust pigment percentage a bit do to a different base product but minwax finally caught on and developed a stain line that we can now do what we've been doing for years.

Yup. Waited that one out). Thanks so much for educating everyone and saving the guys from themselves. I’m surprised you didn’t consider any advice for dudes that are color blind- in that instance, have a nice lady that sees true color and good taste and experience pick for you so don’t accidentally end up with a weird color combination that only makes sense to you and 1 out of 20 guys.

Decks are great. Even better is picking a color and have it mixed proportionally, ask for 20 percent of a color and 50 percent of a color. a good shop will just do it. Most will pull out the deck and try to give you one from the deck. It won't match as well though it will be close. First thing you do is take a photo of the color sticker on the can before leaving the store.

Thank you so much for putting out this video. I inherited an old victorian home that had some unfinished rooms. basically, just kilns painted on the walls and nothing else. I have three rooms that I have been trying to pick paint colors for going on for three years now. When I think if found the right color I bring home the paint swatch tape it to the wall to see if I like it and find it just doesn't fit. Asking one of the employees at the hardware store, Lowes, Home Depot to help you is NO help at all they have all the right answers but none of which applies to your personal project. which is laughable considering they are Supposed to be trained on the different colors and applications of paints and stains. for instance, I found a color I liked but I could only find it in Krylon spray paint. when I asked if the employee of a very popular home improvement store if they could match or get as close as possible to that color, they said they couldn't and went into some long explanation as to why that they didn't have the ability to match that color their computer couldn't; do that blah blah blah. They then suggested that if I like that color so much that I could just purchase a bunch of that brand spray paint and paint the walls with that. I felt dismissed belittled and needless to say that specific home improvement store no longer gets my business. SMH I would have expected that from one of the big box retail employees in the paint department of a wally world but not a home improvement store. I still don't know what color to choose but at least your explanation gives me a better starting point as to how to match colors. I guess it doesn't help that I see color on a different spectrum than normal people (Tetrachromacy) it a pain in the rear, it's like looking at the difference between two photos of the same subject, one in Jpeg and one in the raw I see colors in the raw spectrum. it definitely makes life interesting

Hey Jeff, I know you love those LED pot lights. From a designer perspective, do you see merit in going with an MR16-style housing in new construction and putting in LEDs in instead and being able to choose different beamspreads and wattages? For example you might want 10° spots in a hallway and shower and 35° floods on countertops for a glow effect. Some GU10 LEDs even have a warm glow feature where the light will get more yellow as it dims to mimick the romantic dimming of a halogen or incandescent. What do you think?

There is no paint Bible either. If you bring in a object we can scan it and then create a custom color that matches it. Occasionally we can't scan an item, that's when we pull out the fan deck and find the closest color to it.

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I manage a retail store, yes. I have managed a commercial store, as well.
Commercial stores want nothing to do with DIY customers typically. Most true commercial stores are taking care of commercial contractors ordering 50, 100, or more gallons at a time.
Also most commercial stores have to deal with the industrial side of coatings. You are talking about products that can cost upwards of $500.00 a gallon.
We still didn't have a paint Bible, or replace Fan decks yearly.
The average person that goes out and gets paint from a paint store is walking into a retail location.
Once again, your channel is great. I just wanted to give you info from the paint side. Take it or leave it, but I will continue to watch.

Ditto! I work for Sherwin Williams at a large store that does both commercial and residential. Our decks get updated occasionally... but pretty much stay the same for years. We give out smaller pamphlets with designer collated colors though. And no “bible”, I’ve never heard of such a thing. Maybe it’s just Canada? we do matches via a ‘color eye’ and scan the thing, and finish it off by eye if it’s not quite right to make it perfect.
Also, monochrome is a color scheme, but not something I’d actually recommend. There are much better palettes out there for homeowners!

If you go to Lowe's they have a scanner attached to the computer at the paint desk that can match color from just about anything the computer will tell the associate how to make the paint. The computer can also give instructions on how to mix non Lowe's paint if say you bring in a home depot chip or the corosponding information.

I'd like to hear you're thoughts on Bath Fitters. Some videos look like really good work, but people have posted nightmare experiences too.

What's a good offwhite or neutral color for a living space that never receives direct sunlight? I'm looking for something gray, beige, or greige.

I have patched a few holes in several walls. Is there an alternative to cutting out another hole and bringing that to a paint store to try and match the colors of my walls?

What's the rule on baseboard and window/door trim? Can they be painted the same color as the walls or even a few shades lighter? How do I go about selecting colors for different areas in the house when I want more color than is on one strip?

How about painting the outside of your home with semi gloss?
