Thanks for your remark, I keep that in mind. I was referring more about technical quality, there is some sound saturation in the audio which I noticed after upload and sometimes my diction gets a bit slow. Seemingly, it doesn't seem to bother people.
For some reason Constantine iii (west) is always a interesting figure for me. After Honrious killed Stilicho, he really was a better choice. Raised to the purple in Britain, in "control" of Britain, Gaul, Spain. Hell even honorius recognized him with his base in southern Gaul. Honorius was lucky, he had Constantius iii to handle things. But Constantine iii was certainly looking to invade Italy, and Senator's in Rome were most likely in some sort of contact with him. If you're a rich Senator who lives in Rome but owns vast estates in Italy, parts of Gaul, Sprain, maybe even Britian? If you own these lands you want peace to make money in trade. And with Honorius barely able to protect Italy and Africa I'm sure many of the wanted good relationship with him now that he had vast Imperial land control. Hell maybe if he wins he gets Constantius iii as a general for him in the future. Just always interested me
Epic video, as al of your productions! Your stylefull and cinematic use of the beautifull map is stunning, as are the very orginal animation sounds and the music! Please continue this epic piece of work, for us humble subscribers! (Aso nice seeing a fresh Frenchman on youtube, at least i presume you are, according to your smooth and soothing accent and your second channel). Au revoir mi amigo :)

What a video. I subbed and turned on the notification bell immediately after watching the first video of yours I had found and boy am I not disappointed. Btw please don't hire a voice actor I really like your voice (no homo)

I’m not going to lie I sometimes watch you videos over again bc your voice is nice and it always seems like I had forgotten something I love your channel
Although people downplay and hate constantius, without him Rome would've fallen much sooner. Since he's the only one who pulled enough strings to hold the rapid expansion of barbaros and the userpers. Unfortunately Honorius lived. Honorius, should've died sooner and constantius would've been sole emperor, perhaps a better emperor. He would've needed a capable heir which just didn't exist. They really needed a stilicho or aetius, or a majorian to succeed to prevent the future crisis. Though Unfortunately I doubt after stilichos death anything could've prevented the sack of rome.
Great video as always, Stilicho was very capable his assasination brought about a crisis that nearly destroyed the Western Roman Empire. I hope you also cover Aspar Stilicho’s less capable and more cynical counterpart in the East.
While it is a testament to the strength of the foederati as a political force, it also bears mentioning that the so called ‘barbarians’ had long been integrated into the modern world upon gaining access to the Mediterranean through the once guarded Black Sea and Adriatic/balkan routes. For polemic reasons they were still set apart from the central provinces. They were ‘Roman’, and the fall of the western empire is better understood as an admission that the political superstructure no longer reflected the long changing shift of power happening on the ground. More directly; the ship of Theseus had all the power of the empire with hardly any original of the original planks that built the empire left: different capital, different governance, different culture.
Excellent coverage with just enough detail to keep it very interesting. The maps (I was a cartographer for the government) are fantastic, showing each area controlled by various kingdoms. Just a small question. any particular reason you didn't separate the Visigoths and Ostrogoths in this video?
I cannot remember why I did that. What is for sure is that during the 20 or so year after Adrianople, it was not so clear who and where were the Greuthungi, Thuringii, Ostrogoths and Visigoths.
Absolutely, that is fascinating how many similarities you can find in both the reigns of Honorius and Valentinian III. 3 decades of weak rule started as children with eastern support. Killed their respective best generals. Massive invasions of Gaul and Italy. And I'm scratching the surface
Where did all the normal non-barbarian roman legions go? In the civil wars of the late republic, we see tens of legions fighting against each other. Now, though, why are there seemingly no legions and only barbarians?
Mostly a combination of factors including decline in birth and the army's loss of prestige and attractivity. By that time, the germanic barbarians were the best options in terms of availability and fighting vigor, even with the problems they could generate.
I think it's my lifes mission to make a TV show about this time period! Game of Thrones has nothing on the western roman empire. Its crazy to think how all of this political intrigue led to the fall of their civilization, and how much this negatively affected europe.
I'll never understand the mindset of these usurper generals. There are multiple barbarian tribes within your borders, roaming about with little resistance, Romans fighting Romans will only help these foreigners in the long term. These are the times when unity is most crucial, yet these generals become no worse than the barbarians, starting civil wars, only to lose and have wasted so many lives for absolutely no productive reason.
Not even close. Rome was having civil war after civil war while getting attacked by millions and millions of barbarians and having child emperor after child emperor. That is a complete recipe for disaster
I don't think he was a terrible emperor. I think he had a lot to deal with monetarily and from invasions and usurpers. TO understand he couldn't pay Alaric, Stilicho had already raided coffers to do it the first time. The second time. it was either A. Pay him and bankrupt and potentially be killed by the few soldiers left. B. Keep the money and deal with outcomes in order to rebuild the army. or C. Flee to the east. He chose the most realistic and ended up paying off as he got rid of the usurpers with that army. That army paid for itself to restore the order it could. Think about it! he only had Italy which was little to no value militarily. Majorian had a better situation than him! I think he was inexperienced, under tons of stress, and was almost helpless. Stilicho also had attempted to do what the rest would do. Rule as emperor while having a puppet. I cannot blame Honorius for removing him. but not at the time. it was convenient time. but wrong time. Just to reiterate. No money, no army, no food, and no capable commanders fucked him over.
Honorious was just incompetent and stupid. Everything was not his fault but a lot of things were. He didn't work hard like the crises of the third century emperors.
My only wish is to see this man rise to fame, it’s a crime that TH-cam hasn’t been recommending his channel more…
literally the same could go to stilicho, so underrated
The late roman empire is probably the most interesting period of roman history imo.
I agree
I think it’s because it’s the least well known period so it’s interesting to learn about it

in my opinion, stilicho is the only sane person in roman empire after the death of Theodosius I
What amazes me is that Professor J B BURY
Two volumes From Theodosius to Justinian and
From Irene to Basil have still not been put on Audiobook
Both lived in a time when they knew the Western Empire was in steep decline spiraling out of control.
I wonder where the sack of Rome hand?
