Latvians can immitate Estonian language very well, often is said that Latvian is language with Lithuanian grammar, but Estonian pronouciation, it is because Latvian language formed when Livonian language (related to Estonian) fused with Baltic languages (related to Lithuanian) like Curonian, Semigalian, Latgalian at some point in 16-17th centuries. We also like Estonians have stress on first syllabe always, we also have many doubble consonant, that unlike Estonians we don't spell, but we pronounce them just like Estonians. For examle, "maksa" (payment) is pronounced like makksa, "upe" (river) is pronounced like uppe . These are all typical finno-ugric features, absent for example in Lithuanian but present in Latvian language. So I am not surprised that Lauris mastered the Estonian pronounciation that well although he does not speak Estonian.
He sings in French incredibly well too. Explain that.
Mouskell Estonian language is generally pronouciation-neutral, which enables estonian speakers to easily pick up secondary and tertiary languages. Must be the same with latvian language.

There are also many common words which might derive from common nostratic or eurasiatic language group, that included both uralic and indo-european language groups. And many common words of later origin, some of which could be a reuse.
FIN suru = ENG sorrow = SWE sorg
EST suru = ENG press (+on, +down, +at)
EST surema = ENG to die
EST jalg sureb = ENG leg is "dying", like twitching and buzzing from lack of exercise
EST koeral saba (händ) sorgus = dog's tail is downwards / "in sorrow" / "under psychological or mental pressure"
Thus all that together, in estonian language, 'surm / suru / sure(ma)' means "a twitching under pressure, might ultimately result in death", or "a twitching due to death".

Yes. I suspect that the old "sõbrakaubandus" over the bay of Finland also included food items that tended to go rotten or bad (like cheese or black bread), so whenever estonians brought over something rotten or in mold, it was bartered or sold to finns as 'halpa'. Nowadays moldy cheese is a delicacy and penicillin was and still is a useful medicine.
'Koju' is actually the illative of 'kodu' (koti), which derives from the same root as 'koda' and 'katus' (katto) and 'kate' and 'kaas' (kansi?). The illative of 'koda' is 'kotta'.
The finnish 'koju' would in estonian language be something like 'putka' or 'hurtsik' or 'varjualune' (varjonalainen?) or 'soojak' (suoja). A stall without a cover would be 'müügilaud'. 'Koda' originates from eurasiatic (english language has 'cottage').
It is always fun to discover associations between our languages. :-)
+Virtuozo Fozo So it's not possible to improve the unterstanding with speaking slowly? I don't speak finnish or estonian, but I'm German and for us dutch is very close. A very very slow and simple conversation is possible if both are willing to (repeat things, talk very slowly). Reading is also possible to some extend.
Is something like that possible in Estonian/Finnish, or are the two languages to far apart? :)
or are there only some words that you would understand (like...one in two sentences), but certainly not enough to hold a conversation, and especially the other words being so different that speaking slower won't help to understand the sentence?
Then it would be a bit like German and Danish :D I'm just trying to imagine to what extend they could be related.
we have those false friends too. For example in dutch "brutaal" means "naughty", while "brutal" in German means "cruel". There can be really funny situations with words like this. For example I heard somebody say their kids are "brutaal" and was quite shocked, until I found out that it simply means "naughty".
