+joydeep bhattacharjee partial metering basically covers a bit larger area than the spot metering and a bit smaller area than center weighted metering modes.

Yes, only center. Nikon spot metering works on any point which you select in the frame.

Good question. In portrait photography avoid using spot metering, use center-weighted metering :)
