So, Milk Tea is Yamada's favorite drink, and she mentioned wanting some in the previous episode. Ichikawa appears to have taken note of this and that is why she reacts so heavily to it. I don't know if you missed it or not, but there was a post-credits scene in this one where it shows that he never threw away the chip bag from Episode 1.
@@Timmycoo *MILD SPOILERS* I mean, yeah, but she pretty much pays him back this episode with the milk tea bottle. They both keep the consumable container given to them.
It sucks if she missed that scene. It’s so cap. However, I can’t say I never held on to something superfluous that was given to me by a girl, at that age. Things handled by the focus of one’s affection feel…sanctified or something.
So, I personally call this procces "The Trilogy". The 3 moments that separates Anna kinda being somewhat interested from her liking/loving him. 1. His smile seeing the Baki image. 2. Kyotarou closing his eyes out of respect, also giving her a chance to look closely at his face. 3. The milk tea and all that it signifies. And the "melting" scene is just the consolidation of it all.
No you get it wrong, Ichikawa told yamada to lay off the snack because he didn't want yamada get caught again eating the snacks in front of the teacher, he said it because he like yamada and for the sake of her
@@kallistikaleid A lot of them, this included, are to deal with introspective reassurance. "I am not worthy" kinda thing. Therefor it would never happen. Shame because we always root for the underdog.
This anime grows a lot with some very cute details that may go unnoticed on first viewing. For example, Yamada asked to buy milk tea in the previous episode, but they didn't allow it, so she reacts by blushing when Ichikawa buys it for her (perhaps realizing that he is also paying attention to her or understanding her feelings or even both). . Now about the conversation between Ichikawa and his classmate, it's something uncomfortable but super real for 13 year old boys, I had this conversation almost exactly the same with a friend when I was that age. I know, kids that age are idiots, but it's reality.
8:08 One of the funniest random things about this show is how Yamada will just...apparate to places. Not there a moment, there the next. it's her superpower. 9:20 Her smile and optimism: GONE. 13:03 Everything about this scene KILLS me. The music, the lighting--probably my favorite moment from season 1.
Two points: (1) Yamada is laser focused on what Ichi says, e.g., she calls him out for reading while sitting, which contradicts when he lied to her earlier out of embarrassment (2) at 12:19, when the librarian says, "Sometimes people don't realize the obvious until we write it out for them" has more meaning than just eating snacks in the library
Oh. Wow. That last point? I have watched this series and countless reactions to it, and I never connected the teacher’s words to Ichi’s inability to observe Yamada’s obvious affections. I’m so glad I saw your comment.
Ishikawa is very relatable for me. People who have been shown or at least led to believe they are a nuisance will have a hard time thinking people enjoy their company. Even if shown hints. It either takes a long times for us to be convinced or it needs a clear conversation. He's still not convinced even when he questions it (leading him to call himself stupid for even thinking it could be the truth) and Yamada is not clear enough for his frail self-esteem to get the hints yet. He's getting there though.
I love this series so much, so I'm very grateful for your reactions! I understand Ichikawa, "it's tough believing someone like Yamada could feel something for someone like me."
When Ichikawa is reading the manga and the crumbs fall down on him. They show a flashback how Yamada is eating snacks while reading it. That was the cutest thing I ever saw 😂😍🥰 Such an amazing series, I hope they make a season 2.
Sadly this episode misses one of the biggest, most impactful reveals of the manga. The manga sets this up in a pretty clever way. Up until this point in the manga, all the inner monologues have been from Ichikawa's point of view. For 29 chapters before the new no-snacks rule is implemented in Chapter 30, we only get to see what's going on in Ichikawa's head. So we're safe to assume that any narration squares are still from Ichikawa's POV in this chapter, right? But then we see that when Yamada and Ichikawa are looking at the poster, in the untranslated manga there's a narration square with different font - a more modern, clean and kind of cute-looking design. This shows that there are two inner-monologues happening in Chapter 30. Person A with the brush-stroke font, and Person B with the cute-modern font. So now we head into the scene at 12:27 where Ichikawa and Yamada return to the library, and we go back to the narration squares with Person B's modern font. Because the inner-monologues in this scene are exclusively used with Ichikawa and we know from previous chapters that Ichikawa likes Yamada, this climax appears as if Ichikawa is re-affirming his love (suki) for her. The final panel of this little sequence shows both of them in side profile right as they touch, with the final "suki" appearing exactly in between them and right above their hands, sans narration box. On the face of it, it's already very clever use of the medium - the feelings were so strong they broke free of the narration box and, essentially, manifested within the scene itself. But wait. If you look at the untranslated manga, the final “suki” is written in the brush-stroke font of Person A, not Person B. Meaning that the person who realized that they love the other person is actually Yamada, and that this is the exact moment that she comes to realize her feelings towards him. Then Ichikawa's final voiceover as he leaves that goes "This is how it should be, over with, whatever" is actually in the brush-stroke font of Person A - it's Yamada thinking to herself that Ichikawa just blew through all her defenses and melted her heart. It wasn’t Ichikawa going, “my routine with Yamada is finished” but Yamada coming to terms with the fact that her denial is over. That's why chapter title for this is actually "I melted". Then just to make it clear that yes, that wasn't Ichikawa thinking that, we then shift back to the narration squares with Person B's font, where Ichikawa thinks that Yamada will never change. Just to show that the mangaka knows exactly what she's doing, let's go back to the scene where they're talking to the teacher. When the teacher says, "Sometimes people don't realize the obvious until we write it out for them," the mangaka is referring to both Yamada AND the manga readers - she's actually writing out Yamada's own realization, but most people won't catch it! And though it's obvious to us that Yamada already has feelings for Ichikawa, she doesn't realize it until he touches her for the first time. The anime rearranges chapters a little bit, so Chapter 31 that immediately follows the Chapter 30 library scene gets moved to Episode 9 - where Yamada is trying to ask for Ichikawa's contact info.

Lol yeah that post scene is kinda Ichikawa's shame :s In a ziplock bag no less.

Episode5, Yamada wanted to drink milk tea.
Ichikawa remembered that.
@01:50 Ichikawa remembered that Yamada wanted Milk Tea earlier and was denied by the others ... but Yamada noticed that's why she looks surprised :).

I don’t think she misunderstood it, she was just saying the way he said it comes off wrong. I think she understood what he meant lol
It’s obvious why he said it but it can have a double meaning and come across as offensive
Faroh saying "ichikawa are you STUPID?!" lol hits me because omg I felt that during this show.
Animes has a LOT of horrendous or incorrigible moments in them, but one of the hardest to handle is “Why don’t you see that they like you?!?!”

Pretty sure Yamada was crying in the begining because she thought it was her fault they missed the train.

Did you watch after credits scene too for this episode? :)
