- The hopper was added in the latest stardew valley 1.5 update, it can automatically place items into any machine and the machine will start processing the item, for example you can use it to automatically start turning milk into cheese, unfortunately the hopper can not take processed items out of the machine, and this restriction hinders the potential automation that would otherwise be gained.

i use a hopper to make coffee. i have one connected to a keg near my lil coffee potted plant inside my kitchen.
I do this with tea and have it next to my coffee machine 😊

To me it just seems like a niche use. I wish ConcernedApe would update them so they continuously put in and take out items. Because to me it seems like a lot of resources just to take one step out of using machines.
They act as storage for the stacks of stuff, plus you don't have to go to where you're storing eggs, pick some out to process or grab a stack to start and bring them back. It takes the tiny steps out that eat up your time that we don't think about.
You just walk past and collect, possibly a chest for storing the finished product at the end.
Willy sells bobbers that break down into gold and iron bars, but they don't stack. Being able to fill a hopper with non-stackable items is a huge convenience.
I HAVEN’T THOUGHT OF THAT. I have a chest with a bunch of bobbers, so this with be really useful. Hopper+deconstructer=GOLD

I use it for the bone machine, because it quite rare having those materials on hand.
Great for coffee, brews fast, and you can store your thousands of beans in the hopper.
Also great for an instant keg, load your hopper with the desired kegable item, then spam your fairy dust on the keg. Saves you the cost of crafting lots of legs/hoppers, lots of time. Plus of you're like me and grow tons of fairy roses (for honey, etc), and have a crystalarium shed, it's easy to mass fairy dust.
I've been using hoppers to brew coffee too. I'm stocking up to make "fresh espresso" for Qi's food quest.
I disagree, in a fully upgraded and filled shed, the brewing time is a little longer then the time that it requires to put the beans in the kegs. So just doing a bunch of rounds there manually doesn't require waiting and makes a lot of coffee fast. Using hoppers in the same space would reduce the amount of kegs by more than half and if you only enter the shed ever so often it takes quite some time to process stacks and stacks of coffee.
Waiting for the coffee in this case to be brewed is just straight up wasted efficiency as you could have had twice the amount of coffee in the same time filling them manually.

So me and my bro plays together in Stardew Valley and we use these mods: Show Item Selling Price, Lookup Anything, Harvest With Scythe (saves up tons of time when harvesting!), Map Locations (basically everyone shows in the map where are they at the moment). All these great mods really help us play it better

I like how most of this was added in the new update
If you're gonna use it like this I feel like having obelisks, mini obelisks, return scepter and warp totems might be good. So that you can go back and forth to places and to the hoppers instantly.
That being said, the hopper definitely need some rework to get the more use out of it..
I farm radioactive ore on levels 40-50, since it also gets me coal and the mobs aren't too annoying.
If I have a bunch of copper to smelt, I'll fill the mine entrance with furnaces and just go in and out of the first level looking for ore and checking my machines.
When I want Radioactive Ore, I just go to the mines (in dangerous mode) on a good luck day and then go in and out of the first floor. It's kinda exploitative, but always guarantees a decent haul for a day's work. This approach doesn't work in multiplayer though.
I keep 3 hoppers with kegs for coffee in my kitchen so I always have enough coffee to make espresso whenever I pass by my house
I use Automate(what hopper tries to be), Lookup Anything, and UI Info Suite mods. They're the best.
It works really well for things like the geode crusher and the bone mill where you have lots of different things to process in it that would take up lots of inventory space

Hoppers come with some minor advantages, such as fewer steps in inventory management. Instead of tons of hoppers per purpose I have one hopper for each kind of animal product maker and I just run past them as I pick up other daily items. I'm in late year 3, so I'm starting to feel the time constraint on some days. It's hard to beat the crystalarium or endless fortune statue since they do everything in one go and in one tile, but it's hard to expand just one type of item. Also in areas you run through often having pale ale or coffee constantly producing will be worth a fair bit. And it's easy to fill hoppers with so much of it that you don't need to be able to access the hopper itself for a very very long time.
One thing people also forget about is that sometimes the tile you put the hopper on is ''free'', as in you couldn't put something accessible there to gain some other advantage. Plus a straight run is very helpful when dealing with hundreds of collections. So you can simply toss in lots and lots of items in the hopper that you may not otherwise process since they're not entirely optimal. Plus sometimes it's easier to set up a sub-par area you collect every now and then than adding another big load of crystalariums.
I used the one hopper I crafted for completionist sake to put trash into a recycling machine, worked wonders

It's interesting to see you attacking the monsters with that sling shot. I usually use Sword as my main weapon. I thought its not effective, but seeing this video make me want to try it. Great video 👍
She's not using it as a weapon really, using explosive ammo to break rocks, but it only explodes on monsters and walls
If you have to manually retrieve the output from the machine, the hopper isn't really that useful. You could grab the output and have the hopper put the next input in, or have an extra slot in your inventory be used for the input item. The only place where the hopper would shine is if you use it to put in coal for furnaces and geode crushers.
As far as automation goes, it seems to be the intention of CA to minimise automation so that the gameplay revolves around farming and mining instead of having the game do it for you. However one thing I've thought about is a "junimo shed" which is a shed where you can put machines in the inside, and the building comes with two chests for input/output. So if this shed was filled with kegs, you'd put starfruit in the input, and after seven days starfruit wine would automatically be in the output chest.
However, I think that the junimos should take 10% - 25% of the items as payment (also with the junimo huts) to remove the whole "junimos working for the farmer for free" issue.
I play on PC with Xbox controller. I can load and collect item from processors by simply holding a button and run pass them. Therefore, the hopper itself is REALLY less efficient. The space required for a hopper can be used for another processor. This mean (for an example, a big barn full of kegs), I will only get half the products since I will have to waste a sizeable space for hoppers.
If only hoppers can also take item from processors then they'll be truly useful.

I like the hoppers for organization/convenience. Like, I just have one hopper on a furnace to make iridium bars, but I keep all my iridium ore in there. When I want to make more iridium bars, I’m already near my furnaces and go in and grab them.
I think it’s useful for recycling trash for quartz and coal

In Scrap Mechanic we have a Craft Bot where you can create your stuff, just like that desk you buy at Robin's. The difference is that it takes time to craft stuff and you can put a chest in both ends, allowing you go have an automated production. CA should do something like that with a machine that collects goods whe it's ready
I think you're underestimating the hopper. Just with the barns and coops it saves a lot of time going in and out to collect the resources, specifically once you have autopetters and don't need to visit your animals so often. There's also the bone crushers. You can set up a single hopper on it and dump your fossils in, then just pick up your fertilizer whenever you're nearby. Then there's the crab pots and recyclers, wood chippers, furnaces, slime eggs etc...
We tend to think of them in mass because that's how we've been playing, but they shine with the things that are already low maintenance. That's probably why we have the option to buy the recipe OR individual machines.
sadly i dont really see much of a case for using hoppers at all, you increase your space usage significantly for an extremely minimal convenience of not needing to manually input materials to machines, which is barely useful considering how quickly you do it manually.
Best use I've found is for refilling Silos and as long as you have a chest full/refill the chest when you refill the hopper then you'll always have hay for your animals.
Edit: turns out it doesn't actually work, which sucks but you can still put a chest full by your silos so you don't have to buy it as often.

If you're ok using mods, the Automate mod will fix the problems with the hopper. It let's you automatically load and unload machines placed next to a chest.
there is the NPC seasonal outfits, its' really fun. also there is a mod to put a elevator into the skull cave. I had over 50 mods on my game for awhile lol

When I saw the hopper was added, I was kind of disappointed that it wasn't nearly as useful as the Automate mod. I'm glad my favorite mod isn't obsolete, but also, it's such a nice quality of life improvement, you know?
For other mods, Stardew Valley Expanded is pretty popular, but the set-up can be a bit complicated. There's just a lot of peripheral mods you need to include so that it functions. I also like the UI Info Suite, Berry Season Reminder, and the Tractor Mod.
I use my hoppers for the bone mill (throw in bone fragments/artifacts/fossils, get fertilizer) and slime egg press (once I get a slime hutch, so I don’t have to remember to do it). Other stuff, I find it easier to just make multiple machines, and I want to manually control my ore vs bar balance because ore has other uses.
Fairy dust + hopper sounds good on paper, but it’s a challenge to make more money than you would from just selling the fairy rose and diamond. I think one good approach is to let your wine age to gold quality, then use fairy dust to jump it to iridium, but the hopper is no help there. Anyone found any good ideas there?
There is a mod called Automate that lets you set up fully automated processes.
Re: mods, I like Lookup Anything. Occasionally it feels a bit cheaty, but I try to avoid the more cheaty-feeling usages, and more see it like an easier source than the wiki, like if I want to know what recipes an item is used in, so I know how much I need to hoard vs how much I can sell, and stuff like that, all at the press of a button, rather than alt-tabbing to the wiki and searching manually.
Surprised the grabber sold by Marnie doesn't work to pull items out.
I find it hard to figure out why a hopper would be useful, when you could just refill the work stations from the hotbar as you collect the items.
I guess it could keep your hotbar a little less cluttered while you are doing other things. But it seems like kind of a waste of space.

Automate mod is game changing.
It’d be nice if you could say buy/make an upgrade that can be installed in any machine that pushes an item two the nearest inventory, the way the mill does
Coming from games like Factorio (or minecraft, let's be normal), I was really hoping this would add a little more automation. The most monotonous tasks really need some quality of life changes, especially with repetitive low value tasks like restocking Preserves Jars, Mayonaise, Moving roe, etc etc. It's a pain since they're so hard to craft/get the recipe for, too!
i have to ask why not have pot and kegs? that way you go from the planter to the kegs with out having to chagne areas
Can you put as many of one item in the hopper as you want? So then you don’t have to worry about putting a random fruit in the kegs?

If you haven’t already, try the Stardew Expansion mod, it’s amazing, and honestly like playing a remaster. There’s more heart events, new characters, and expansions to old ones. It can’t run on the new beta yet since one of the mods it needs to run is still being updated, but once that finishes updating, you HAVE to try it.

I just use Automate Mod. It takes a while to get accustomed to it, but it's worth it

That's an auto-petter! It's new from the 1.5 update. Basically you can put it in either a coop or barn so that you don't lose friendship from not petting your animals. It's extremely convenient and definitely a time-saver :)
You can buy it at Jojamart ONLY if you are doing the joja route for 50k gold. But if you went the community center route, it's much harder to get (e.g., skull cavern treasure chests).

it’s a real pity that you can’t chain hoppers so that one sucks ore into a furnace then the next hopper sucks the bar from that furnace, allowing the furnace to process the next bar! It seems a waste of time and effort tbh! Thanks for this info, it will save me a lot of wasted effort.

I pick bat cave only take fauit and turn it into wine in one storge building and us a nother storge building for full of jam making. So make money off both at same time. Jam way wont make u rich rich but dose help.

It's a newer feature, not sure when it was added but it was originally only for the barn.

Random question.. Do you or anyone know an effective way to prevent fruit trees from being a target of meteor event? My iridium fruit bearing trees(3 freaking years of development) got destroyed. Each year a meteor happens and it always targets my trees. I'd appreciate it if the method doesn't make me use the greenhouse to plant the trees or mods because I like to play my game vanilla.

oh my god im so overwhelmed how much work and effort do people get I cant play stardew valley properly cause I have a lot of things I wanted to do in my mind , everything I planned to do fails cause I get distracted in everything and I just ended panicking and just exit the game cuz am anxious asf
Yes, it can be overwherlming because there's so many things to do but remember there's no time limit, you don't have to do everything at once, actually you don't have to do everything and if something doesn't go as planned you can always try again other day with more experience (or reset the day). Also there's not "right way" of playing Stardew Valley, don't feel that you have to imitate what other people do in the game. And keep in mind that what people show is the attempt that went right, not all the failures until then.
