      Straight from Women's Own.
      Honestly before the days of fast fashion and heaps of disposable income I'm guessing everyone, even if you were moderately well off, had some fabrics and patterns they liked too much to just get rid of. (Used clothes refashioned and bought by poor people was very much an industry in the 1700's)
      What did they make them into? At a guess, nightwear, robes, baby clothes, accessory bags or perhaps children's clothes for kids who were in the in-between ages where they grow like weeds. Aside from letting out the undergarments would be too costly to constantly refit them into brand new outerwear. You have the remade clothes from older fabric for play/day wear and then some "nice" "new" monstrosity that they wore for formal gatherings and church. Knowing little kids, they may like the pattern or the cut, but things like the lace cuffs and starching at the neck, waistline, or cuffs would drive them crazy. (Says me, the former child turned adult that still doesn't like starched stiff lace or collars.)

      There's Takarazuka revue all female theatre troupe in japan , where's women played as male called otokoyaku & female role called musumeyaku , most of their stage play is 18th century one of example is their adaptation of anime Rose of Versailles in this video th-cam.com/video/Lor79P13OkI/w-d-xo.html
      even the costumes not 100 % accurate but the 18th century aesthetic is their playground.. they made female in 18th century male clothing so extravagant

    My two cents… I love having more videos and behind the scenes about one dress. If you are feeling pressured to produce one neat start to finish video per outfit… I definitely don’t think that’s necessary! As a viewer, I love a series about an outfit broken up over weeks or months in several parts, showing the progress and challenges of dressmaking. I’m not sure if that would be easier from a video production standpoint, but if it would alleviate stress and provide more sewing time, that’s a suggestion?. 😀 You already amaze us so don’t feel like you have to have a whole new outfit per video per week!

    • @michellecornum5856
      @michellecornum5856 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Agreed. I could go for a big project like this taking a month worth of videos -- like a dedicated video just on the jacket and the way the false front is attached on the jacket. (I'm currently trying to wrap my head around just that thing in three different eras.)

    Please don't apologize for it becoming a 2 part video! Re-doing stuff is just part of sewing, and I agree it'll be nicer with some wider skirt trim. And I really like long videos with lots of talking, they're perfect for listening to while working on hand sewing.

    You *can* get that shade of pink in the 18th century. Cochineal dye, when it's not mixed with madder to give a true red, by itself dyes a really bright shade of pink. It tends more towards the cooler end of the spectrum, verging almost on magenta. I think it's more popular aesthetics favoring soft shades and 'if you're going to using the money to show off wealth via lots of imported bug dye, go all out and make it red'. But even if it wasn't "accurate", it's a dress that makes you happy, it's stunning, and you look amazing and you should make it for that. I just find dye history interesting.

    I think the confusion comes from the fact that in french, there is on the one hand the "robe à la polonaise", and on the other hand the"retroussé à la polonaise". There are quite a few differences in the vocabulary, for example the italian gown is what we call "robe à l'anglaise", a fitted back dress worn over a stomacher are called "robe ajustée". The pieces you sewed to close in the front are called *compères*.
    If you are interested in the types and names of french dress during the reign of Marie Antoinette, this mini conference based on 18th century sources has english subtitles:

    There is also a video series on Empire fashion on the same channel.

    I know you love sills, but I'd love to see you make a more "casual" 18th century gown (or mix-and-match jackets and petticoats) in cottons or linens. Or perhaps a "shepherdess" costume. Kind of a combination of themes between Marie Antoinette and Cottage core?

    Oh my gods, I've been playing that game for almost a year now and I was wondering when historical costube will get to it... I mean yeah they're not always period accurate but when they get something right? Holy crap, the details on the game dresses are just too good. (And yay for featuring Madam Pompadour!)
    Also yay for more 18th century dresses huehue
