You're completely right, Ayanakoji himself understands he's a sociopath and tries to learn about emotions like fear and love. Also in the light novel he tricks the reader in the beginning to think he's a normal human. Ayanakoji is interesting but I don't think the author intended him to be viewed as a mega sigma that we should aspire to be like lol
@@LessonsFromAnime In the novels at first he's written like a romcom protagonist. He makes references to anime tropes in his head, and behaves like he has social anxiety. He also seems to be integrated into society way better than he actually is. It's kinda weird in hindsight. Also, in the light novel, at the scene that comes at the end of season 2, when Sakayanagi challenges him, his response isnt just a challenge, its hope that she will be able to beat him, because it would prove that someone doesnt need to be broken like he was to be successful. He says "I hope for that from the bottom of my heart" in reference to someone beating him.
YES, THANK YOU FOR EXPLAINING THINGS I CAN'T GET OUT OF MY HEAD. I do not understand why people idolize Ayanakoji. I guess he's cool? But doesn't he want to not be the emotionless manipulator that he is?
Personally I think his character does have the potential to be great(haven't read the LN) but the whole "sIgMa mAlE" thing surrounding him makes it so hard to talk about it
I really love the LNs and can say that the anime does not do them justice from a character writing standpoint. In my opinion what makes Ayanokoji actually good as an "un"emotional character isn't that he doesn't feel emotions. It's that he's been forced not to act on them his whole life, so like a muscle that's atrophied, he's become *unable* to act based on anything but logic towards a goal. His soul withers inside the machine his father built around it. When he says no one else really matters to him and that he manipulates everyone around him, people tend to misconstrue it as bragging or a cool statement of fact, yet in reality it's his deepest true emotion, lamenting that he's lost the ability to be affected and fettered the way others are. tl;dr Ayanokoji realizes he's lost something important to the human experience to become what he is and would gladly give up the ability to do anything he wants for the ability to actually goddamn want something.
I dont idolize Ayanokojis mindset. I idoloize his effect. I'm more akin to him than others are and its lonely. Thats why I love watching Shonen and Sports anime because its filled with characters with traits that I lack. Passion, simplicity, and fun. Grass is always greener. But no matter what his mental state is, he gets things done. And thats what I enjoy about his character.
Great video! There are many youtubers who make videos on how to be dark/manipulative like Ayanokoji. But alternatively, I've focused more on using him as an inspiration for overall self improvement, especially in terms of knowledge and physique and I've also advised my viewers to use him only as an inspiration while following their own values, beliefs and interests. Same with any other anime character guide video that I've made. Also, if you have time, then you should read the COTE light novel as it will give you a more in-depth understanding of Ayanokoji's personality and psyche. One last thing, you're very close to 100K, and I hope that you reach it soon!
I've heard the lite novel is a lot better, and yeah I completely agree - everything else about him is honestly pretty damn cool. It's just the whole "manipulator" thing lol
I think you can aspire to be like him in some ways, but importantly not the same routes that're emotionless and manipulative. Confidence, analytical skills, physical capabilities, academic intelligence, ability to not care/be phased by the negative things others say about you - these are all traits I think are good to desire that Ayanakoji demonstrates. But I'm not trying to be an asshole in the process lol
At some point, i was trying to be like Ayanokoji like those other people who idolize him, but fortunately, i took a step back and realize what i really like about him and why am i idolizing him, well i like how he is calm and level headed and in control. I guess that part of him fascinated me, and i don't know if it's just me because i come from a family who has had a history with really bad tempers, so i'm glad that you're talking about this topic because i don't really think it's healthy to be and pretend like him. It's just weird, to be blunt.
As somebody who is a lot like him. I do come across as weird. People often state they don't know how to act around me because I don't change my facial expression or tone during conversations at all. It makes it difficult for people to talk to me because while I do listen, understand, recollect, and interact. (Something everyone wants in a conversation) they feel uncomfortable because I'm non-reactive. But I don't know how to properly react to suit their needs in a social setting.
Yk when I first watched it I did feel like wow this guy is insane and I wanna be like him... But now I've grown out of it thankfully and instead what I get from this show is the drive to become better at everything... Atleast more than average 😅😅
A lot of people dont understand that a lot of times that he didn't acted like a normal person it wasn't because he didn't want to, its just that he doesn't/didn't know how to interact with others
Anime and LN are almost two completly different things. Anime with its limited time have to jump straight to action and almost completly skips "less" revelant things. And the problem is, those things are what makes novel so great. Tbh i usually dont even care about those special exams, and anime have to focus on them cuz those are major plot points. In novel however, much time is spend on this weird antisocial guy just trying to socialize. And he is gradually getting better at this, and thats the best part - when you see how over time he and others are becoming better friends and are goofing around, randomly encountering each other at mall etc. Its even contradictory (in a good way) how he is this "badass edgelord lone wolf" when he have too, and in meantime he is casually making friends, and anime almots completly skips this second part, leaving just him being edgy or weirdo. Also, that means that there are many characters whose i love in novel, and in anime they are like literally nobody cuz their conversations with ayanokouji went from many pages long to like 4 lines in total. For context: anime covered 14 volumes around 230 pages each in 36 episodes. Thats not much screentime per volume. (Also sorry for bad english lol, hope my point is understandable)
I think modern day superficial side of society kinda is based around Machiavellianism and from a superficial standpoint it is classed as cool to be what I Ayanokoji is. As social media is the most superficial corner of the internet, it is bound to fuel people who are seeking a warped sense of power. I think the character is great in the novel and multi-dimensional as it seems like he is actually just a product of how he was nurtured in the white-room making him his dad's most prized possession who is trying to escape his past. However, in the anime he seems like an overpowered sociopath who has one agenda - winning.
Not to mention how manipulators etc. pretty much always pick on the easiest victims possible, why would you feel good about yourself like that lol Shidou was the same if you remember, he was a "king" under everyone beneath him but when he saw people that far surpassed him he couldn't keep going forever like that if he wanted to get better. Characters like these often bring false idea to the table and make people hate or dislike the realistic ones, that happen to make mistakes, bad decisions or simply lose etc., like my favorite character of all time Oikawa from Haikyuu. People are so used to these fictional characters being flawless and just so perfect, like all a lot of shounen protags like naruto or luffy that when they experience an actually down to earth and beautifuly written character they cant appreciate it, because the character falls short to the perfect ones that they are used to and like so much.

The thing is, I agree with the video but the anime does a very bad job in portraying his character. To begin with, the anime is a bad adaptation of both art and story telling. In the LN, Ayanokoji is mostly an "unreliable narrator" that lies often in his own thoughts so the Author surprises you in the end with his tactics and schemes. The infamous "tools" scene is there in the LN too but one thing I can think of is that he usually complements these thoughts with how he wants to obtain emotions too, or how he just wants to "lose" to prove that his father is wrong in calling him a Masterpiece/creating artificial geniuses Point being, yep, the people wanting to be like him from the anime is both ridiculous and dumb, but I can understand taking in just certain traits of his character such as his intelligence, level headedness, academic abilities, physical prowess, observation, adaptiveness, etc.

eh? "Bizzare" as in it's bizzare that people aspire to be him, not that he's bizzare. But yeah I actually think the ending of season 3 is potentially putting him down a much more interesting route as a character, but this wasn't so much about him as a character anyway
