    I can say, having worked with VIP visits in the military, that the short notice of their visit 100% is what allowed this to work. It prevented any amount of foreign customs and courtesies research and forced the navy to fall back on generic best practices and hope for the best. They were less likely to notice minor inconsistencies because they were so focused on themselves and making sure they were being proper. Late notice visits aren't terribly uncommon (at least in the current era) and while they are annoying, everyone is used to just making it work. Even 24 hours notice would probably have been game over for the whole hoax.

    Quick fun facts about HMS Dreadnought (and possibly the essay-long comment that Zepherus was dreading):
    1. It couldn't go backwards. As revolutionary as the steam turbine engines used in HMS Dreadnought were, this first generation of turbines had a few problems. One was that although they worked brilliantly* when going forwards, they didn't work at all when you tried to put them into reverse. This was due to how the steam turbine works: basically, just blowing high pressure steam over a series of fan blades attached to the drive shaft. Works great one way, doesn't work at all the other way. The Cunard Line had the same problem with their own turbine-driven ocean liners Mauritania and Lusitania; they were the fastest passenger ships in the world at the time, but once they got to port they were awkward to try and dock because their engines couldn't reverse. This is also why their rival, the White Star Line, stuck with older reciprocating engines in their new Olympic class liners, which included the Titanic, only using one low-pressure turbine to drive the center propeller using steam exhausted from the piston engines. This turbine also couldn't reverse and may have been one of the reasons the Titanic couldn't avoid its date with an iceberg.
    *. Although steam turbines could be much more efficient and powerful than reciprocating engines at high speeds (plus the part where there wasn't tons of steel jerking up and down slowly shaking itself apart as with piston engines), at low speeds steam turbines were generally found to be horribly inefficient, gobbling up tons of fuel (first coal, later fuel oil), often even more than their piston equivalents. In some cases the problem was even worse, with the turbines needing to be run at a certain speed for them to work at all. As one example of the extent of the problem, designers of HMS Swift, Admiral "Jackie" Fisher's bizarre destroyer-cruiser hybrid (that really deserves an episode of its own someday for what a colossal failure it was) initially planned to fit it with both turbines and piston engines, with the pistons being used for any movement below 15 knots and the turbines being engaged only for higher speeds. In the end, the Swift only had turbines, which could push it to a top speed of around 26 knots (well below the 38 knots often falsely claimed, thanks to Fisher's whitewashing), which it could hold for about an hour before running out of fuel (or before the engines broke down or exploded, which was actually more common). When cruising at a more normal 15 knots, the Swift was good for only about 1500 nautical miles before again running out of gas.
    Both the low speed inefficiency and the inability to reverse problems were later solved by attaching the steam turbines to effectively giant gearboxes, not unlike on a car, creating the geared turbine. With these, the ship's engineers could control which direction the propellers were spun and how fast while only needing to make minor adjustments to the turbines themselves. This has been superseded in more recent years by the turbo-electric drive, where the turbines turn an electric generator, which feeds power to electric motors that actually turn the props, although it should be noted that these engines have their own problems, mostly to do with overheating.
    2. As built, HMS Dreadnought had no smaller secondary guns. "Wait, why would that be a problem?" you're surely wondering, "It's got all those really flippin' big guns. Isn't that enough?" That's what Admiral Fisher thought too, ergo why none were initially installed. However, at the time of Dreadnought's construction a new type of ship was emerging as a major threat: the torpedo boat. These small and relatively cheap boats could dash in close, often too fast for the big battleship guns to hit them, and fire off underwater torpedoes that could damage the enemy ship below the waterline, forcing it to leave the battle or outright sinking it. Fisher was vaguely aware of the potential of the torpedo boat, but he thought that the cruisers and torpedo boat destroyers (later just destroyers) that would follow Dreadnought around would be protection enough. His successors in the British Admiralty disagreed and following Dreadnought's completion hastily had smaller 3in quick-firing guns essentially bolted on the decks where ever they would fit, with only basic gunshields for protection. Later models of dreadnought-type battleships, such as HMS Bellerophon, kind of the production model to Dreadnought's prototype, would include improved secondary gun armaments from the start.
    3. Last one, I swear. The first dreadnought-type battleship in the world almost wasn't HMS Dreadnought. The Japanese Imperial Navy had been working on a very similar sort of battleship at the same time, the IJN Satsuma, which were to be the first in the world to be armed entirely with 12 inch guns as their primary armament (and incidentally were the first class of battleship the IJN ordered exclusively from native Japanese shipyards). Originally, the Satsuma and her classmates were designed to carry 12 12in guns spread across 8 double turrets, 1 on the front and back and 3 on each side. However, Japanese industry couldn't produce the 12in guns that the navy wanted, so they had to be imported from Japan's then-ally, Great Britain. Only, the British were already working on HMS Dreadnought at the time and would much rather those 12in guns go to their own new ship. The part where they would be the ones to turn battleship design on its ear and not the Japanese was just a nice bonus. Frustrated by the delay, the Japanese instead used the few 12in guns they had on the fore and aft turrets and substituted smaller 10in guns for the side/wing turrets, making the Satsuma a sort of semi-dreadnought. The IJN Satsuma would go on to have a largely uneventful but fairly active career, assisting in the capture of German colonies in the Caroline and Palau Islands during World War I before being disarmed in 1922 in compliance with the Washington Naval Treaty and sunk as a target ship. HMS Dreadnought meanwhile never fired a shot in anger, her only significant naval action being the ramming and sinking of the German submarine U-29, which did make her the only battleship to sink a submarine.

    • @noname117spore
      @noname117spore 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The bit about Dreadnought being the only battleship to sink an enemy submarine is actually probably not true. USS New York in WWI also probably sank a German U-boat through a collision, although accidentally, and with the collision most likely being the fault of the German submarine. The New York hadn't noticed anything before the collision, and only had the damage to the ship to go off of in determining what happened. Which they concluded was likely a German submarine colliding with them (and then sinking).

    • @sabre0smile
      @sabre0smile 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Satsuma was laid down first but she didn't launch until November 1906, 9months after Dreadnought and actually less than a month before the latter was commissioned into active service.
      The delayed launch wasn't due to the with-held guns either so you could say Satsuma was the first built and Dreadnought first launched and put into service. Satsuma didn't enter service till 1910 at which point she was already outdated rather severely, which -was- the fault of the with-held guns.
      Dreadnought also had a sort-of gearbox similar to described but they actually connected to a second set of turbines. The Navy wanted her to be able to cruise long ranges at medium speeds, so they gave her smaller turbines for use out of combat that... turned out to be pretty useless.

    Fun fact: The Chinese restaurant (Wong Kei) that replaced Clarkson's had the notorious reputation of being "the rudest restaurant in London". The staff would shout at customers, waiters would chase people who didn't leave a sufficient tip and insulted customers who asked for a knife and fork. The restaurant became popular because of the unique attitude of the waiting staff. Things have changed since after they were renovated.

      So was it a rudeness-themed restaurant or really just staffed by rude people? I remember a restaurant in Dallas where the (intentionally) rude staff was the whole shtick, and the rude behavior was way over the top. Like calling you a dumb bitch and throwing food at you and making you wear big paper hats with insults on them. But then again, a skim through Yelp will turn up stories worse than that. Saying it’s on purpose would be a bold and clever excuse!

    • @MatrixExpress
      @MatrixExpress 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I was told the reason the Wong Kei's staff are so rude is due to it's popularity with students from University College London in the 1960's. At that time those students were notorious for sex, drugs and alcohol .. Wong Kei's just gave back as good as they got given and they became so famous for it that it became their modus operandi

    Maybe the reason the navy didn't care that they were supposedly from a landlocked country is precisely because of that. Why would they let a foreign dignitary from a potential rival country inspect their shiny new dreadnought? Maybe they were more willing to let a dignitary inspect the ship if they knew he didn't have a navy anyways.

      The cane tapping for sure.......how a group of people so bitterly opposed could in the heat of the moment come together....So many invasions makes for a people who have to be able to come together at the worst moments in order to survive. Also with such naval history the ability to cooperate with people you do not like is essential on board a ship, British humour is born from this requirement, we use humour to fight with people we don't like because we know that we might need them to help fight against a common enemy. That
      s why Brits are good at diplomacy, 1000s of years bitching and fighting amongst ourselves we are masters at bringing together disparate groups for a common cause.

    I can remember "bunga bunga" being used in the US Air Force rather freely in the late 80tys and early 90tys at the base I was stationed at. It was obviously racist in its use, but never got cracked down on at the base I was at, possibly because no one knew what it was. On the other hand two Iowa farm boys got in big trouble for calling each other "buckwheat" because someone remembered the character from the "Little Rascals". The term was from that point on labeled as a racist epitaph by our command structure even though it had nothing to do with race, and everything to do with locality- Iowa state Buckwheats.

    How about the first europeans explorers to reach timbuktu and come back live, I think it could be a good video. He also wrote a book about it Travels Through Central Africa to Timbuctoo. And I love your work can’t wait for the next video.

    "Maybe learn something"!? On the internet! Bah! The internet is a fad that will soon die. I think you should all start acquiring a good knowledge of Morse code and flag signaling as soon as possible. Bunga bunga, and goodnight.

    Posh people do that, they get away with a bit of homoerotic sadomasochism, reminiscent of their public school days. Poor people do it, they go to prison.

      Are you stating the poor people are treated worse than rich people? Amazing discovery, I don't know how I couldn't see this myself.

    They're lucky they reconsidered I think. Idk, I feel the papers would have had an even bigger field day if they found out the Navy caned the pranksters. Especially when done in such a manner as just straight kidnapping people in broad daylight only to then beat the shit out of them and leave them in the countryside. Would the prestige hold? Or would it quickly devolve into a legal matter in their disfavor? Morally speaking it seems way worse than a prank visit.
    Still surprised they actually got away with it though for basically no repercussions. Not even a fine or anything, just a sorta but not really threat.

    This video showed up in my recommended, so I clicked on it, and despite it being over half an hour long, I couldn't stop watching. I have to say this is one of the most fascinating, well made videos that I have watched in a long time. The amount of effort you put into making this is quite impressive. All I can say is great job. You've definitely earned my sub.

    It’s actually not to odd for a landlocked nation to have an interest in naval matters. You know rivers and lakes and such.
