This gentleman sunfish sailor is very modest … I have read his book “The Sunfish Owners Manual” and it is a wealth of knowledge on sailing, history of the sunfish + he has painstakingly described how he has refinished, refurbed and made seaworthy Zip, Chip, Buttercup and many other Sunfish that he has rebuilt. If you are a newbie or a seasoned sunfish sailor you should have this book in your library ..… it is priceless and mine is well worn and has been read many times ….. Very glad to finally meet you on TH-cam and happy sailing. Y
I’m new-ish to sailing and wanted to get a better understanding of the part names of the Sunfish. love your video. I inherited my grandpas ‘65 Sunfish, that was originally the same blue as your sunfish. I ended up painting it navy blue and added three stripes. Love the video, good work.
Thankyou for breakdown of the Sunfish parts and pieces. I am new to sailing and totally hooked,. 2 sunfish ,1 old rudder, 1 modern +1 Hobie one 12 your videos are very helpful and to the point .
Thanks for the info. I just inherited my step dad’s dad’s 75 Sunfish. Unfortunately he was storing the sail, booms, and mast under a friend’s porch. Well the guy passed away and his wife threw it out. So now I’m searching around for used replacements. I’ve never sailed, but would like to try it out.
I have an 80’s Sunfish and want to add a hiking strap. Is it necessary to cut an inspection port in front of the dagger board trunk for the backing plate?
I don't know of another way to get a backer plate inside, but some folks might. One thing to consider, a port is not a bad thing to have, to sponge out water or be able to reach halyard cleat backer block, halyard fairlead, forward flotation block backer, daggerboard trunk repairs, etc...Most folks put a 6 inch deck plate between the trunk and the coaming. You might want to ask your question on the Sunfish Forum, we visit there and would be interested to hear ideas. Cheers, Kent and Audrey sailingforums.com/sunfish/
For us it raises the boom aft so we don't have to duck as much. Some Boat Engineer with a 500 pound brain could tell you if it induces weather/lee helm, changes center of effort, disturbs wobble of the moon etc,,, but it works for how we mess about. We call it The Geezer Rig.
I have a pre 72 boat. 3 or 4 inches behinds the middle of the coming is a 4" diameter aluminum disk, 1/16 inch thick. It has 3 cylindrical 1/2 inch columns sticking up. It is mounted to the deck with 3 wood screws and gasket material. What is it?
Hello your video just popped up thank you for all the info. I just purchased a 1971 Sunfish last week & starting to restore it. It sure helps to know correct names of all the parts & pieces. I’ve never sailed before can’t wait to get it on the water. Is your book still available?
Howdy and welcome aboard. You picked the best boat! The Sunfish Owners Manual can be found on Amazon: www.amazon.com/Sunfish-Owners-Manual-Maintain-Repair/dp/1484987217
I am brand new to sailing and bought a 1972 Sunfish. It's in pretty good shape mostly just needed a good cleaning and stuff. But I am needing to replace the bridal and I noticed the bridal on your Sunfish here is simply some kind of line with an added pulley. Can you tell me about this? Remember I'm a newbie so dumb it down. Thanks.
It's a piece of line, 5/32" I believe, just under 3 feet long. We tied a figure 8 knot on each end t make a bridle. The block is fun but not needed. You can tie a snap shackle to the end of the sheet (main sail line
Hello, from Puerto Rico, I bought a Sunfish 2000 two weeks ago and keep the original color, but need a new update, the boat is off white with the original 2 red lines. I appreciate you help, first what boat paint I could use. I love a new colors like white and red. But your opinion are important for me, Thank and God Bless.
You need to check different brands to see what color you like. Interlux Brightside, Pettit EZPoxy, TotalBoat WetEsdge, Rustoleum Topside or Kirby Paint.

You may have a Laser Performance Delaer nearby, current maker of the Sunfish. Orcheck craigslist or facebook marketplace. Good Luck!
Well done, I shared this with my Sea Scout Ship to help the youth with the terminology.
Great!

I usually rig my Sunfish with my lower boom parallel to the boat. I see that yours has quite an angle. What difference does it make? Thanks!
Makes it easier to keep clear of the boom when tacking.

Not sure but if I had to guess, maybe a mount for a compass, used in racing.

Ok, here in Puerto Rico find many options is little difficult. But I really appreciate your suggestion.
