My 3rd great grandfather fought at the Battle of Piedmont in the 36th Virginia Infantry Regiment. They held the left of the Confederate line right up against a bend of the Shenendoah River against a 100 foot near vertical drop down to the river. When the Confederate line was rolled up from the right, the men of the 36th Virginia had nowhere to go and 112 surrendered including my 3rd great grandfather who was from the Walker Springs area of Giles County, Virginia west of Blacksburg. they were taken to Camp Morton (Indianapolis, Indiana,) but many were sent to Point Lookout, Maryland to be exchanged back to Richmond, Virginia around late February, early March 1865 including my 3rd great grandfather who was in rags by then, and who died of fever around 7 weeks before the war ended.
Interesting. Thank you for sharing. My husband's Confederate ancestor spent 16 months at Camp Morton in 1864. He also was shipped out to Point Lookout in a prisoner exchange. He had been captured at Farmington, TN during the Wheeler raids. There are photos of Camp Morton showing prisoners.
Sorry to hear of your G-g-grandfather's demise. The loss of life during those 4 years staggers the imagination. I visited the Piedmont battlefield back in 2011with Scott Patchan and went down Walker's Lane, what was then the Crawford Farm and stood on the bluff overlooking the Shenandoah River. A memorable experience.
Another fine presentation by Sarah Kay! Watch out, Gary! No...I can hear you say that it's not a competition. All the same, Sarah Kay, it's great to see more content from you. Well done!
I had 2 gr. Grandfather's and a gr. Uncle that fought for the Confederacy. Sgt. Tilford Jackson Moore 57th Virginia infantry coK Botetourt county fought 4 long years in The War of Northern Aggression
Sheridan was supposed to meet Hunter in Lynchburg but never made it as Hampton stopped him going west. Early is then free to conduct his raid on Washington. After he is stopped by the VI Corps and they chase each in Northern VA, Sheridan is sent north with his cavalry and additional infantry.
When in Lexington burning VMI, Hunter also saw fit to burn VA Governor John Letcher’s home…not withstanding pleas from Mrs. Letcher and her children to spare their home. Hunter was a beast without any moral center. He is despised in the Valley to this day!
Great lily pad video tying the early and mid 1864 Valley Campaign. I bet a lot of people didn’t know Breckenridge went east to help Lee. I know it was a secondary area of operation, but from 1861(Patterson) through Sheridan in 1864 there were just a terrible string of Union generals. What does the research and historical record say on this?
Mount Joy became My. Sorrow. The servants at My. Joy stole the families silverware from the Union saddlebags and returned it to the ladies of the family.

Excellent presentation! Very informative and interesting. Thank you!
I live in Bedford Virginia. Hunter's troops marched down the road in front of my house on their way to Lynchburg.

Excellent--but is that Massanutten back there?
@@StevenSmith-dc1fq thanks, and yes
When does Phil Sheridan take over the Shenandoah Valley?
Early August 1864.
Hunter also hung an innocent man when he hung David Creigh of Greenbrier County. He should have been punished for his actions!!
Foote was right. The South never had any chance to win that war.
Thank God!
We re I acted the 36 love to talk more
Lol
You didn't even mention the Destruction at Buchanan.
Thanks for nothing.
Sorry for the negativity
