La Plaza de Constitución, also known as the Zócalo (which originally means “plinth” but now refers to a town plaza or square), is the heart of Mexico City’s historic neighborhood, housing the Metropolitan Cathedral, the National Palace, the Old City Hall, and several other main governmental buildings that have seen 5 centuries worth of some of the most history-making moments in social, political, economic, and religious matters. Its construction dates back to the 1500’s, and the beautiful bandera (flag) is at the very center, which is just one block away of the Templo Mayor (and according to Aztec legend and mythology) is considered the center of the universe.
