Commissioned, Take 6, Bebe & Cece, The Clark Sisters & The Winans were untouchable in the 80’s. They are the fathers & mothers of contemporary gospel music
Technically and I’m telling my age here, the Fathers of contemporary gospel music are Edwin Hawkins and Andre Crouch (70’s The Mothers would be The Clark Sisters. (70’s) Bebe and Cece were still with Jim Baker and the PTL Show. Everyone that has been mentioned here are absolutely legendary. We thank God for their gifts.
Wow, don’t I remember how awesome Commissioned was!! I had never heard such “cool” Gospel music! I couldn’t get enough of Commissioned, Winans, and Clark Sisters in 1980s. And I still like all of them!❤
Growing up in Michigan during this Era was amazing with 85% of gospel music coming from here. Commissioned is the greatest male gospel group of all time! (Vocally) Unmatched!
Oh my...thank you for posting this❤. I use to be Commissioned publicist when they were with Benson Music Group...Dawkins & Dawkins, and Marvin Sapp era. That Fred Hammond is some kind of writer. He composes hits, using the scriptures. Thank you for the WestA full-house flashback memory! Jason White was the Music Director in that era.
I love the Benson music era. There were so many great gospel albums and compilations released on Benson in the early 90s. I used to make gospel DJ mixes on cassettes and most of the songs I put in my mixes were from Benson. Dawkins and Dawkins was my favorite gospel duo in the mid and late 90s. So many memories.
May God continue to bless you for your ministry because it was DEFINITELY ministry in the marketplace. All of those groups have been a tremendous blessing to so many of us over the years!
Commissioned’s harmonies were so dope! The other clip with Tye Tribbett, Erica Campbell, Kenny Lattimore, Chante and the Legendary Stevie Wonder. Whew that service had to be amazing!
I’m so thankful Dr. Matti Moss Clark opened the door for Commission! One of the best Gospel male group!!! I feel for those that seems to not appreciate them in this video! Embarrassing for any church organization to have this kind of behavior especially to those that are singing to the glory and honor of God. It seems whenever there’s a new sound of gospel music there’s always resistance. Look at Fred Hammond now!!! Keep going on in the name of the Lord!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yes its called innovation. People especially "church" folk, usually dont react well to what they arent used to but this way of singing was a different style it was upbeat and less "churchy" sounding. Praise God Commissioned would go on to do great in gospel and Fred Hammond even as a solo gospel artist. Thank God for people like Dr. Mattie Clark, who knew great talent when she saw it and wanted God to be glorified through whomever was willing to use their musical gift for His glory.
They actually came to sing for the COGIC Annual Midnight Musical that was held after this service across from here at the Dixon-Myers Hall. It was an annual ticketed sold-out event that featured many national gospel artists. I believe Dr. Clark wanted that crowd to hear them before the big musical.
Maaaannn.. Look ya'll, as far growing up past knee deep in the Church, ya know being a CK(Church Kid) these wonderful, God fearing, multi talented, Going hard for Christ, spreading the love of Jesus all over the world for five decades Young Men, were OUR BOY BAND and my Favorite. If it wasn't for their music pulling me out of waaaay too many dark places to count, I do not know where I'd be. I am soooo grateful for their ministry and them relating to so many people of ALL AGES and grateful that they are still allowing God to use them to this very day. Thank you so much for sharing#SUCHANAWESOMEBLESSING❤
WOW, look at the STONE FACES on most of those people in the background on the 1st song!!! Man, Contemporary Gospel was really frowned upon during that time period!!! And what do you know, a few decades later & Fred Hammond returns with FIIIIRE!!!
Yes. Even Oh happy day by Edwin Hawkins would have been still frowned upon in those days and that was the 80s. Either that or they tired of this fund raising event and they want to go home. Lol
@777Lace yes I remember when this group came on the scene when I was a teen. Church folks had issue with the sound. But church folks have always been hung up on tradition. Love Commission!
That was too contemporary for COGIC back then! Just to think that The Hawkins, The Clark Sisters, The Winans, and Commissioned were all considered too worldly for church and now they are considered traditional gospel
Maybe for some of the other people but definitely not all of us. I was around when Commissioned first came out I was a huge fan. Even my parents were fans as well. 4th Generation COGIC!!!😊
This is the day that the Lord has made ❤️ RIHP Evang. Glenda Crafton and enjoy your Heavenly Mansion, Aunty 👑 You have richly earned Your Heavenly Crown in Glory
I wasn’t around, or remember this group, just discovered them a few years ago, but whew, good to see where a few of these heavy hitters got they start. I been known fred and marvin got vocals for days before this though!
I’m sure I’m going to get a lot of smoke from this statement, but only Fred should be considered a Gospel All Star because he is the only one still true to the gospel message and a life centered in the truth of Jesus
@insuranceaccount986 I would include Tye Tribbett. He messed up almost 15 years ago, has repented, and been restored. He's actually spoken out against the industry recently regarding them trying to force him to write a certain way and he vowed not to compromise. His music is still Christ-centered
What a difference a few years makes… Commissioned back in the day was “too worldly” for COGIC, they were going to send Fred and the crew to hell for singing like that 😂😂 😂
YEAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! For all those who ask, does African Americans OR American Africans have culture? What do you think this is? We invented this brand of music, this unique sound, and also this unique keyboard and bass ensemble responsible for this sound and melody. So YES! We have culture and this is just a small version of it because culture is expressed in MANY forms.
This was a very innovative time for Gospel music. You had Commissioned, Take 6, and Bee Bee & Cee Cee Winans with a more contemporary sound… Church people were not really ready at first and didn’t receive it. I wish it would have stayed at that level of Contemporary, because now it’s gotten so Contemporary you can’t tell Gospel music from Secular music or easy listening…. Now it all kinda sounds the same. Not to mention how they perform and dance on stage like they are at a night club…. It’s really changed for the worse.
Dr Mattie moss was no joke she didn’t play about GOD 😢 🙌🏽 #dedication ❤❤❤
Commissioned, Take 6, Bebe & Cece, The Clark Sisters & The Winans were untouchable in the 80’s. They are the fathers & mothers of contemporary gospel music
@Tabitha245, Edwin and Walter Hawkins should have been in your comment to because they came even before The Winans and Commissioned.
WHAT THEY ARE IS OFF
Indeed my parents use to sing in the churches with them ….Love them❤Love ❤
And still untouchable….. yeeessss!

I will never forget this day, when Dr. M.Moss Clark introduced Commission at the Holy Convocation!
They were Awesome!
Please put a date on the COGIC appearance
And who was the mob boss in the background???

I was there! I also (and a legion of other young ladies) met them after the service. 😁 One of the 1st Gospel Boy Bands!
Gospel Boy Bands!! I love it😂🙌🏾🙏🏾

I'm just glad that Fred and Commissioned were not bothered by the reaction of those group of people.
Yes its called innovation.

Good morning! That's why I don't fool with dem',church folks, dey',mean.
That's just a much older group on camera in the forefront. There were MANY 😊 Saints there very much into their ministering.

Can't believe their singing during the offering 😳 oh well, they became LEGENDS!!!!!!!

So glad I grew up in Detroit to witness and attend all the Midnight musicals!! An that was my churc crush Commission ❤❤❤
Who knew that these guys would be a part of the new wave of Detroit-based gospel, if not, the continuing tradition of the Motown sound?
I love Fred Hammond's music and Ministry. I, also loved Fred Hammond when he was with the group Commissioned.
These men came out the wombs anointed of God! Still Anointed To This Very Day!!!
