Mate, I am a Timorese now live & work in Oxford,, nice to see your channel in 3K subs already exploring many countries in South East Asia, I like your videos of Timor,, how do rate Timor experience from 1 to 10 compare to others you have been visited?
Yeah, Indeed, Oxford is beautiful... Timor and Indonesia are very different,, from its root Timorese are Melanesian,, and Indonesian are Malays/melayu,, two different races, but now in Timor everything is mixed by crossbreeding, some chinese and Portuguese. I know Timor is underdeveloped, poor infrastructure. And I am glad that Singapore Investors are now developing Pelican Paradise & Dili Marina Squares,, and Govt has plans to expand & upgrade Airport so it can accommodate more connectivity . It is vital for the Tourism Industry, so Timor can't rely only on oil.
@@mitotv6376it has been 22 years since independence most investment were only up to ground breaking and nothing to show after that. The problem of east timorese is that they are racist different from West timorese, same racial stock but were not racist to other indonesians Who has different background.
Yep, this is Asia's little Rio de Janeiro. Thank you for visiting our country. This is a small young country. Sorry if there are things that don't make you comfortable while you're here. Thank you very much. Enjoy your trip around the world, friend.

The story of Timor Leste separatism is very different from the actual reality. They separated from Indonesia when I was still a child. I remember growing up with the view that my country, Indonesia, was the poorest in the world. That was a very realistic view because right before Timor Leste separated, Indonesia was hit by the worst economic crisis of all time. They separated because they thought they could escape the burden (Indonesia's economic crisis) and become a developed country because they had their own oil. But what, Indonesia is actually developing very rapidly, they are just running in place. The point is that they betrayed their families who were in trouble to satisfy their own desires
And now they get what they deserves for their betrayal. They do not trust their own family same racial stock. But they trust Australia who later steal their oil and left them a dirt poor country.
I will agree with you there, although I would add that I don’t think what they were doing was ‘evil’, soldiers are brainwashed mostly (by various things) to carry out atrocities. It was an incredulous statement and yes, rather a naive one! Thank you 🫡🙏
Could I correct something please. The images you showed were of the Santa Cruz massacre, but it happened in 1991, and was not part of massacres that happened in 1999 by pro Indonesian militia groups. The Santa Cruz massacre happened after a young man was killed by the Indonesian forces. Hundreds of young people gathered two weeks later for a memorial service. After the service they walked from church to the cemetery at Santa Cruz, and this became a protest against the Indonesians. When they arrived and gathered in the cemetery, Indonesians troops opened fire, killing hundreds. A British cameraman filmed the massacre and smuggled the film out, so the world became aware This put pressure on Indonesia- to eventually hold the referendum in 1999. Pro Indonesian militia then tried to kill as many pro independence Timorese and destroy as much infrastructure as they could.
@@life_done_different You did well. I lived in Timor Leste for 18 months. I read up on its history and culture before I moved there so I was aware of the massacre before I arrived, and I remember the massacres in 1999. In the first week I arrived we did a tour, which explained the events from 1991. However it isn’t easy finding a lot of detailed information about Timor Leste online.

Yeah, I'm sure the genocide that killed one third of their population had nothing to do with it
And now they get what they deserves for their betrayal.
They do not trust their own family same racial stock.
But they trust Australia who later steal their oil and left them a dirt poor country.
Thank you for your story I appreciate it. I think there could be multiple complex reasons around the split for sure.
@@life_done_different in what kind of world they want to admit it 🤣
So you speak tetun???
Ans portuguese???
No, I spoke a little whilst I was there and I spoke a little Kreole from Cape Verde!
I was there in 2001. One of the worst places on the planet back then.
Yeah I think it was pretty rough in that transition stage 😬😬😬

Yes - well spotted, it was quite hard trying to find a library of images chronologically and that covered all events - I tried to do my best!
