Since you and Angie visited my primary school in Maasai Mara when I was young, I've been inspired by your incredible work.
I've recently started a Wildlife Photography club at a college where I'm studying to become a tour guide. Your insights and knowledge are significant to us. Thank you for everything you do🙏

Yes, be generous! All excellent points. I've seen too many photographers disturb wildlife and put the animals' lives in danger just to get a picture.

Thank you so much for following our work Steve. Very challenging times right now here in Kenya - and around the world - for people and other life forms - we are all connected and Covid-19 is certainly bringing that fact in to stark contrast. Warm regards - Jonny and Angie

I agree with you 100%. Many of our game drives have been ruined by loud, obnoxious people who have no respect for the animals, or their travelling companions; vehicles being driven at a high rates of speed; driver/guides taking their vehicles to within inches of wild animals, causing fear and distress; smoking in the vehicles; constantly shouting into cellphones; shouting at the animals so they will turn to face their camera; vehicles crowded around an animal, leaving it no escape route; banging on the side of the vehicle to get the animals attention; other drivers barging in front of you and blocking your view completely. It goes on and on and on. It seems that there is no respect for anything any more, and ethics have gone flying out the window. So sad.

Dear Irene - thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video and share your thoughts. We despair at times but always try to find ways to make a difference in to the future. So much to do and so little time to do it. But if we can inspire other people to join hands then we can make a difference. Warm regards - Jonny and Angie

So well said! Can I ask you what you do when you come across a thing that's not ethical? I remember a time when I was following a pride of lions for 12 days in the Masai Mara. I really wanted to get a story to tell. One morning we found the two male lions, but they were surrounded by vehicles and every time they wanted to move into a certain direction they were cut off. I was so upset by it and I wanted to scream at those people to let them be. We left the scene, because I didn't want to be a part of it. Could I have done something in this situation?

Thanks so much for sharing Betty-Lou - we know that feeling!!! And it is very hard to know the best course of action. There is so much pressure on driver-guides to deliver - and delivering has come to mean getting great images - not just watching spellbound. We love being photographers but are very concerned by its imapact at times. When it comes to the Maasai Mara there is definitely a need for greater discipline and accountability. On the west side of the river in the Mara Triangle it is really well regulated - no more than 5 vehicles off-road at a sighting - and you have to return to the track after 10 mins. Higher standards of training is also needed - though that won't ensure good practice unless it goes hand in hand with a sense of the Park/Reserve management being serious in their desire to manage protected areas and mitigate the negative aspects of tourism. Encouraging the driver-guides to form their own associations and monitor their own work community - and inspiring the camp and lodge owners to play their part - are also important. Plenty to do and think about - and we often drive away and look for something a little less frenetic!!!

Thank you - it is so easy to get in to that "must get the shot" mode - but that can be so "ugly" and takes away from the beauty of what you are witnessing. Not alwasy easy to pull back and override that impulsion - but you have to try.
