Downsizing Engines Will Never Work...

- The new C63 and Ferrari F80 are possibly the worst cars from either manufactuer. They simply reject everything the brand represents, as they give off the wrong character due to their engine.

Engine = character
Design = character
Driving experience = character
Power ≠ character
Power ≠ driving experience
depends. if the car will be too underpowered for its weight its gonna suck
@@zzzmatyzzztrue, but let’s be honest, find me an underpowered vehicle released in 2024. I feel like cars are getting OVERpowered and it’s ruining the car community. Everyone now thinks, that 180 hp is slow.
180hp, on a car that weights 3000 kilograms is gonna be slow. @@tibhard
@@cvd1yes I get the point.
As it should be, nice meeting you, fellow man of culture. 🤝
Power and speed are kind of worthless in terms of making a car better. (obviously if a car is slow and underpowered it won't work, but 2000hp in every car just kills the fun and the feel.)
Blame the European emissions regulations. The EU hates big engines. By selling plug-in hybrids with small engines they benefit a lot by countries that have lower tax on electric vechicles. Now especially in 2025 there are more strict regulations, which means car brands have to pay a fine for every ICE car they sell, BMW for example has to pay a fine of 1.150 euros for every X1 they sell
But the other Mercedes have bigger engines. That's the point, other Mercedes have bigger engines in the EU!
The EU is almost singlehandedly responsible for half the issues with modern enthusiast's cars... As someone who lives in Switzerland (where on top of similar emission restrictions we also have insane noise regulations on another level), it feels like getting anything modern to sound good is pretty much impossible. Except BMW's F Series... I don't know what kinda magic they pulled on them, but somehow those beautifully loud engines made it through the cracks...
@@marceloguia6107 German car manufacturers are actually considering to make factories and start producing cars in Turkey to escape the strict european regulations
not just the big SUVs have V8. S class, SL never dropped the V8
I forgot to say the saloons and the SL in the sentence LOL. I'm an idiot
if the S Class was downsized to a V6 or turbo hybrid 4 then I would be outraged 😆
I mean, they have a 4-cylinder but it's the base "45" engine. The V8 of the "55" and "63" is still alive and well!
they did drop the v12 though
@@gumbdoober S class is still available in V12 S680, SL dropped the V12
And even the 4.0 V8 Biturbo sounds like crap…
If you live in europe I understand, but trust me in countries like the US with no opf, its crazy trust me.
Compared to the M157 5.5 BiTurbo, the M156 6.2 NA and the M113/M113K, yeah it sound bad compared to these.
Nowadays, automakers like BMW and Mercedes are ditching their traditional V8 for lower displacement plug-in hybrids, all because of stringent emissions regulations and being eco-friendly.
i think the new m5 is a good medium ground get v8 just downsized and assisted with hybrid to help out with mpg
They just needed to add a mild hybrid to the V8 and it would of been fine
@HowToSpec ngl been eying up new volvo hybrid performance line 460hp in a subcompact sedan goes crazy
@ yea they’re great cars
BMW has made 6 cylinder M cars basically since from the beggining
The 4cylinder C63 is insanely fast.. but people forget the mandates that essentially forced car companies to produce more efficient engines/cars
Toyota seems allergic to anything above 4 cylinders
allergic to getting restricted from markets like Europe.
I heavily disagree on the F80. There's a good reason for the choice of engine, the car is based on their Le Mans prototype which also has a V6.
At worst I can say it kinda gatekeeps the fanbase of the car to Ferrari motorsport fans rather than the average Hypercar buyers, but it's not surprising because Ferrari is very particular about who they want driving their cars and what they get to do with them.
There's also the fact that it's the first flagship Ferrari with AWD, unlike all of the previous flagships that were all RWD. To me, this car is like if Ferrari looked at the Porsche 959 and it's turbocharged 6 cylinder engine and computer controlled AWD system and thought "two can play that game" but in 2025 instead of 1989.
It's a special car in its own way but it lacks the soundtrack of previous Ferrari flagships. My favourite Ferrari will always be the F50 because of that F1 derived V12 with 5 valves per cylinder which sounds *amazing* like an angel roaring as it charges into battle.
Blah blah blah nobody cares. V12 is more desirable. LaFerrari is more desirable.
That 2026 CLE that you showed in the video is basically a revived CLK.
The 2000s was the best time to be interested in engines due to the sheer variety back then: naturally aspirated V8s, V10s and V12s, W8s and W12s, VR5 and VR6 engines and turbocharged/supercharged 4, 5, 6 and 8 cylinder engines (and quad turbo W16s). The start of the downsizing trend is when I think the decline of cars started. Now everything has a V6 or a 4 cylinder hybrid in it. The variety and unique characters of each cars are gone.
People would much rather have 350kW from a V8 than 500kW from a 4 cylinder. When will car brands grasp this??
Just stop buying, they won't grasp a damn thing until there are decrased in sales, revenues.
Downsizing only works if makes things simpler
tbh the reason ferrari made the f80 a tt v6 is cuz thats where they r making the most innovation in terms of engine performance. at the end of the day, its a success of the laf, f40 and 288 gto, the last 2 of which were the fastest cars in the world wen they came out so the f80 had to be an engineering masterpiece and ferraris na v12 havent rllly increased much in terms of horsepower in the last decade. maybe they should have chose a tt v8 instead but yh 900 hp from a tt v6 alone is crazy, only 100hp off the na v16 tourbillion. also they released the daytona sp3 with a v12 so the f80 cudnt be.
The thing with the F-80 is that it tries so hard to be a track weapon where the Laf doesn't(the evo does), and their customers are going to left it in the garage anyway. Car brands are obsessed by catching laptimes instead of making interresting and beautifull cars these days
That new Ferrari might as well be fully electric with all the "noise" it makes.
We’re looking at the end of real sports cars
Traditional sports cars for the middle class are dead for decades now… Cars have become so heavy, it’s honestly ridiculous. It’s pretty much muscle and gt cars nowadays. The few exceptions off the top of my head are the mx5 and the alpine a110. A REAL road legal sports car is very hard to make because of safety regulations.
We are already experiencing the death of hot hatches and entry level sports coupes.
Modern day hot hatches like the Audi RS3 and Volkswagen Golf GTI are too expensive and heavy and full of too much tech. I think the late 2000s and early 2010s was the best time for fans of hot hatches.
Entry level sports coupes are almost gone. All we have left are the Miata and the Toyobaru GR86/BRZ twins. There is no Nissan Silvia or 240SX, no Honda Civic SI coupe or Integra GS coupe or CRX SI or S2000, no Hyundai Tiburon or Genesis Coupe, no Toyota Celica GTS or Paseo, no Chevy Beretta or Cavalier, no Mazda RX7 or MX3 or MX6, there's no Pontiac Firebird or Sunbird or Grand Am, no Saturn Sky or Saturn SC, no Mitsubishi Eclipse, no Dodge Neon or Daytona and no Volkswagen Scirocco or Corrado. They were all killed off by crossover SUVs.
@@CyanRooper Exactly. And those crossover “SUV’s” are just the same boring rebadged crap from other manufacturers that share the same platforms
You people act as if it is the car makers choice in the matter. The biggest markets for a C63 are high price cities. London, Brussels, NYC; All have congestion charges; that are skirted around via the engine downsizes and hybrid drive trains. Congestion charges on the old C63 drivetrain are almost as much as the lease costs in London, That is not sustainable in any way when the $800 a month car becomes the $1500 a month car with the congestion charges.
Eu taxes heavy cars so they make smaller engines with turbo rather than bigger naturally aspirated ones
they could have done a mild hybrid 48v on there bi turbo v8 instead of droping a 4 banger with phev on your c63amg
Nothing wrong with being nerdy
Everyone respects that, but no one goes like “Maaan I wish I was him” 0:14
@@Rodiaalbaye1829 you completely missed the point lol.
I’m nerdy, I’m making fun of myself. But we would all rather be the 6ft4 chad American football player LOL
The same way we can respect the 4 cylinder engine in the C63 for being extremely impressive as a feat of engineering. However, no one is thinking to themselves “oh I wish I had a 4 cylinder AMG”
If it doesn't have a V6,V8,V10,V12, W12, W16, V16. Maybe only a select few of 4 cylinders, 5 cylinders, I am not interested. Flat 6, of course, Porsche. But trying to make everyone go EV that can kick rocks. ICE only for the next 100 years and beyond.
I don't know if Ferrari in their bubbled wisdom, knows that if we wanted to experience a 3.0L V6 que could just buy a 15 year old Toyota RAV4. (Hell, it's a bigger engine, thats a 3.5L)
It's all the fault of regulations. He have to accept that the car as we know it is dead. If you want character, buy something older and keep it running.
Emission are getting restrictor
I think regulations pushed automakers to make some incredible engines and breakthroughs. Without requirements, automakers would probably be making far worst engines, probably. Maybe the need to outdo each other would have helped progress. I dont know.
But it seems very clear the ability to push the internal combustion engine further has reahed its technical limits. At least for now.
Now automakers from all over the world are giving us more complex yet weaker engines being forced to run at high stress levels and pressures to get as much power as possible. It just hurts the consumer.
Thats my biggest issue with all this. Making all the rules for automakers just makes the cars more conplex and less affordable for consumers and also makes the car less likely to last as long as older cars. We go on and on about the environment, yet I dont see any requirements or pushes to make cars last as long as possible.
It's hard to believe, but the world will run out of oil one day. So alternatives, of course, must be explored. Cars and all industries need to care about the environment somewhat. We need to think about the future. If not for pollution, then the use of raw materials and how less raw materials will be avaliable in the future one way or another.
But allowing such blantant waste of materials, time, and cash to happen seems absurd. In a effort to be "environmentally" friendly we just waste so much.
Low production sports cars with big engines are one thing.
But what really gets me is on the lower end of normal commuter cars that wont last the test of time these days because their tiny underpowered turbo charged three cylinder is being over worked to pull a ever heavier body that is full of potential failure points and is so complicated you cant fix it or its not worth fixing.
Heck, you cant even replace a broken light bulb in the headlight anymore. Instead of just switching a LED bulb for a new one, the whole light housing has to be replaced.
WHY do we allow such wastefulness to happen?! Automakers and government regulators are full of crap.
Can you do a how to spec for the zr1/z06? O.o
Cars in the UK that still have V8s:
Aston Martin Vantage
Aston Martin DB12
Aston Martin DBX
Every Bentley
Chevrolet Corvette
Ford Mustang
Lamborghini Urus
Land Rover Defender
Maserati Ghibli
Maserati Quatrroporte
Maserati Levante
Every McLaren (Except Artura)
Porsche Panamera
Mostly the fault of regulators.
The company said they will fix it
It might just be me but after the m156(the 6.2/3 liter v8) snd the m157( the 5.5 liter) their 4.0 v8s sounded pretty bland and boring
Yeah, sure. Downsizing will never work if the only thing you care about is the number of cylinders.
Imagine hating on a literal race car powertrain in a supercar, just because it has 6 cylinders instead of 12.
@@sven679 a supercar shouldn’t have a engine commonly found in minivans.
I’d rather it have a 5 cylinder engine if we have to downsize, as that would actually be interesting
@HowToSpec What?! They are selling minivans with 900hp ferrari engines? And they are common?
@ V6s are minivan engines, I will always see them as such
I can't hear you over the glorious sound v8s, v10s and v12s bozo
@HowToSpec Name one minivan with a 120° V6. Just one.
when is the CLE 63 coing out? that V8 was teased almost a year ago.
@@kishlayverma6622 yea I have no idea and I’ve been wondering myself why it’s taking so long. It could be their final V8 so perhaps they’re going all in for this one, hence how long it’s taking?
Man to be honest as long as the new smokes the old ones by far....ten your opinion is just that
@@Zues-hf9ez no one cares about how fast an AMG goes. It’s supposed to just be insane. No grip, too much power, too much torque and it should look like a bodybuilder in a suit.

@HowToSpec you could just get the old ones instead of trying to bash on trying to evolve the old ones were fun but how can you move forward if you stuck on your glory days
Go woke go broke in a nutshell

@@nothingheretowatch7371 Not really. I think anyone would far rather be born into a richer family with more connections, a more attractive face, genetics that allow you to be taller, better insertions for bodybuilding etc
@HowToSpec I am 6‘2“ 200 pounds blonde hair blue eyes, my worth is based in Jesus, I would much rather be shorter and have less money than be atheist, sorry for my bad English its my third language after German and Dutch :)
@ I’m a Christian myself, albeit a very VERY inexperienced one.
However, I don’t want to live in delusion that I wouldn’t trade my life for someone else’s because I would. I would love to just wake up one morning and be at least average height, never mind being 6ft or more. Combine that with better muscle insertions so I could have a better physique? Oh yes please!
There’s nothing wrong with wanting a better start in life, whether that be for financial goals, athletic goals or for an easier time getting a relationship.
And you’re English is great don’t worry, it’s better than mine to be honest LOL
@ God bless you brother, I hope your channel blows up 🙏 I had a little of a struggle ngl in High School because of my hight, my cousins were taller and bigger than me, later I realized that it doesn’t matter as well as all other material stuff. This life is short and full of thorns but deep down I know that Jesus is got my back and room prepared for me in Heaven. I realized that life is not Fair but God is. This life has many beautiful moments but also ugly and uncomfortable ones, this earth will pass with all of its struggles, in heaven we will for sure not care what happened here on earth that is full of sin. Some might be strong and fearless but the truth is they will get old and weak, some will have tons of gold and money but in sickness it’s all worthless, so I put faith in ethereal God who is got a Mansion prepared for me in Heaven. 🙏❤️✝️
@ Thank you very much, God bless you also.
I do struggle with obsessing over worldly desires and probably will forever, we are all terminal sinners after all.
Downsizing works if done correctly. Everyone was quick to complain about the 2017 Ford GT not being a V8, but instead having a turbocharged V6. But I haven't seen anyone complain about that for a long time simply because the car is amazing and the V6 does its job brilliantly, it doesn't need a V8.
Fuck v6s I couldn’t care less about either a Ferrari 296 or a ford with v6
