My son just turned three .He can talk and ask for all his needs and point to objects that interest him, ask for them or say look there is a pegion etc .. However he is not able to answer a few questions yet or answer yes or no question. Instead he replies with what he needs . Also he is learning from echolalia, but then once qe correct he also puts words in context ans try to ask . I taught him i want to eat peas..he now says i want book, i want to sit in car, etc..he is not talking much socially, but very happy and talkative at home ..kindly suggest how to help him talk socially and answer questions, answer the question like whats your name

We got one of those large padded mats that had letters and numbers for my nephew when he started to creep; He loved looking at the different colours and shapes, and we started saying the alphabet and pointing to the letters to teach him. Once he was able to hold your finger, he used it point to the letters/numbers for us to say it out loud. He was 2.5 years and still was not talking, so his mum got him a magnetic board with magnetic letters and started teaching him to spell his name; he loves green apples, so she showed him to spell apple, and put an apple next to the word. We noticed that we only had to spell a word once for him and his photographic memory kicked in to spell it himself. Not long after he started saying the word he spelt. Within 2 months or so, he had almost 4 to 500 words, including his colours, things he likes to eat (like strawberry, melon)..., action words, names of people in the house, and guess what, he stated saying the words as he spelt them. At family gathering it would be a game for him, we ask him to spell a word, we celebrate, he ran around and gave high-5s and waited for the next word. We kept a list and built on it and ensured revision as well. He now says things like "I want more green apple please"... "I love you" followed by hugs... stuff like that... still a long way to go. He is reading and ahead of his pre-school classmates, as my sister moves ahead to teach him his reading every day, so by the time class comes around, it is revision for him. Maybe something here might help someone whose child has delayed speech, hence sharing. Take good care and be loving and kind to your kids, they learn best when they trust and are comfortable with you and you make it fun. Cheers!

This is great, so encouraging. We get so consumed in the childs delay such that we ignore there strengths and yet we can use these strengths to teach and build up their speech. Can I share this experience of yours in a group on Facebook?
