👍 I used to lose my tomatoes every year to blight until I watched your tomato videos. Trellis, pruning, fertilizing, and using the aspirin spray. Haven’t lost a tomato to blight since. Thank you. ❤
Also try dry powdered milk on your tomatoes. A tablespoon in the hole before you plant the tomatoes, literally works wonders at keeping away all wilt diseases. No joke, I read this in a home gardeners book.
I use the powdered milk also!
Anybody else?@@leonardbutler2231
I never clicked so fast on white powder
ME TOO!!!

I sniffed this video and was disappointed
ha ha ha
Don't lie!
JIT redefined: I literally just sat down to look up online on how to deal with ants in raised bed. Thank you Brian.
I use Diatomaceous earth in old baby powder bottles. It helps me to just poof it over all the plants I need to protect. I also gave my daughter some to use in her dorm which was overrun with bugs! BLECK!
Diatomaceous earth can be very damaging to lungs if inhaled. I recommend you use a filter mask if working with very much diatomaceous earth.
I actually put Sheetrock in my garden, and tilled in, what was clay, turned into a very nice composition.
Have soaked willow in water for years. Works fine but unless you have a tree to work with nearby, it's a big hassle.
White Powder #5 for me is kaolin clay for tomatoes. Helps with heat stress. Doesn't do anything for blooms but seems to create a sunshield on the leaves and fruit. Less cracking on the heirlooms so they can ripen a little more on the vine. Cheap and easy to spray and wash off the fruits.
We have a huge pussy willow tree so I will try soaking the leaves. I also have white willow bark that I take for headaches, it is as good as aspirin I think.
I just watched a video on using kaolin clay for things like apples, watermelons, squash and other plants that have vine borers. I was looking for some on Amazon but could only find the stuff for facial masks. Is it the same?
@@happy2cya70 yes but it is pricey. Depending on where you live, bait shops may have it. I did buy it on eBay a while back. 10lbs for $15. It takes about 4 oz per spray gallon. We run a small farm and keep a lot of it around. Hit me up if you get frustrated.
how do you use/apply it?
@@GraceSufficient74 a good 4 ounces of clay powder to a gallon of water. Coat the entire plant.
I’m so glad you made this video! I got a lot from it but mostly the info on gypsum to help improve clay soil. The native soil here in the mountains of NE AZ is very high in clay. We just had someone dig down 6” in the ground so my husband could lay pavers around our raised beds so it would be easier for us to get down to their level and prune/harvest. The soil that was dug up from this excavation was dumped on one side of our backyard….and it’s a lot. We’ve been discussing how we can make this soil usable in a some flower/ native plant beds we are making in our front yard in the next month or so. Gypsum to the rescue! Now to figure out how to break up those huge clumps! 🤔🤔🤔
Pentru îmbunătățirea solului in romania folosim dolomita
I had a yard that was solid clay. Couldn't grow a thing. I started mulching where I wanted my first garden. Coffee grounds, kitchen scraps, etc and now my yard is very lush. One area at a time.
Brian,
One add'l caveat for diatomaceous earth: be careful not to get it in your eyes, especially if you're a contact lens wearer--it can irritate eyes & scratch contacts. 😊
FYI, you can buy 50lb bags of food grade DE at the feed store really cheap.
& wear mask at application ❤
I love the videos where you get into the chemistry of things 💪🏻💪🏻👍🏻👍🏻 and the facts versus fiction stuff.
Thanks!
Thank you for this video. Especially thank you for the timestamps with the actual names of the subject powders. Very helpful!
Rocking Video!! ...one addition..
Rock Phosphate!!
..I'm buying some D.E. today now!! Thank You..I'm in TEXAS, so it will stick!😅
And here I was sure one of those white powders would be something fun for us, too. Well, dang!😆 (I use 3 of the 4 you mentioned). I haven't tried gypsum, yet. But I was thrilled the day I walked into a Dollar General, and on the medication aisle there sat a big bottle of plain ole uncoated white aspirin. I have written on it "Garden Use ONLY", to ensure that if someone has a headache around here, they're just gonna have to suffer. The aspirin are a garden tool in this house, not a medicine.😁
And ty again for the info! I always need a reminder to use my diatom. earth. But the bone meal, I use a couple of bags each season.
I have been using fresh Willow extract that i make from the White Willows i have on my property for the last 7 years, and I can say for certain, it provides amazing results! The active rooting hormone in them has made a night and day difference on the roots i get on my plants now too.
I bought DE today and I use the aspirin spray every year
I used diatomaceous earth last year and it worked against slugs. Need to try it this year again as I lost already some tomatoes to them.
I use diatomaceous earth in my chicken feed and goat feed . It’s a natural wormer. It needs to be food grade.
I use white willow bark all the time. Good stuff.
It is also good as an organic rooting solution.
My seed soak has some white willow and H2O2.
Namaste
I swear im going to remember to do the asprin thing this year. Lol.😂
Health food stores sell white willow bark tablets. I actually have them instead of aspirin. I think I'll try this as I live in the humid south.
0:24 Gypsum-Calcium sulfate dehydrate. High levels of sulfer and calcuim. Mostly use for breaking up compacted and clay soil. Making it more porous. Also helps to remove salts from the soil. Helps prevent crusting of the soil. Does not change the PH of the soil. Good idea to add compost with it to soil as well.
2:31 Bonemeal-Great source of Phosphorus. The P in the NPK of fertilizer. Slow to break down. Only need to be applied once per year. Plays a big part in photosynthesis, in root, fruit and seed production. Promotes flowering & increases disease resistance. Around base of plants-1 T. Up to a cup around shrubs or trees. Mix a few inches into the soil. Water thoroughly. Too much will disrupt nutients in soil. Follow label direction. Can activate the compost bin.
4:41 Diatamacious Earth-rich in silica. Safe for humans. A natural insecticide. Cutting through eletroskeletons of ants, aphids, and slugs. Must be reapplied after a rain or when wet.
6:13 Aspirin-Helps control disease in garden, produce more fruit and maskes fruit taste better. Works only on olants in the nightshade family. Tomatos, eggplant, potatoes, peppers. Spray aspirin solution. Spray every 2 weeks. Keeps plants immune system up
600 mg of aspirin powder, blend with 1 cup of water. Mix with 1 gallon of water. And use in sprayer. Look for aspirin that is uncoated if using tablets. You can mix in a fertilizer for foliar feeding with it as well.
Aspirin was a game changer thanks to you! Of course the nurseries want to sell lots of need which doesn't work as well.
I used the aspirin spray last year and it worked great, one tomato that was not blossoming started to blossom and set tomatoes on in the first 2 weeks of use.
What's the ratio between aspirin and water?
@@doloreslane4259 6oomg per 1 gallon of water
Willow branches make an excellent compost tea that can be sprayed on your plants. Put cut up willow branches in a 5 gallon bucket of water, and let the branches ferment for 2 weeks. Cover the bucket with a screen to keep out insects, because it really stinks. Strain the solution through cheese cloth or a very fine screen, so that there are no solid particles left in the liquid. Dilute the liquid tea to at least 50% strength or less, and put the solution in a sprayer or spray bottle. Hower for any health safety concerns, do don't use on edible crops if you intend to eat witin 2 weeks. Ornamentals you can apply anytime.
Thanks!
I am so glad i came across your video on TH-cam. I have clay in my back yard , very hard to get plants to grow. Cant wait to try gypsum and all the others too. Thank you
You are very appreciated Brian. Thank you
Thanks! I saw your video on the way out to put some aspirin water on my tomatoes and peppers but also did the potatoes👍🏻
Thanks Brian!!! God bless you and your family. 🙏
Perfect timing on the info, thanks!
Great video! I was taught to put aspirin in the hole when I plant tomatoes. 😊
I believe DE will also kill polinators, though, so maybe sprinkling on the plants isn't a good idea. 🤷♀️
Great video, terrific information, thanks so much!
Thanks Bryan, I just ordered so,e uncoated Aspirin. Thank you for all your good information.❤
Calcium silicate Vansil w-10 is another white powder that may be good for gardens. Good for powdery mildew and adding calcium. It’s mined out of NY.
Fantastic idea's Brian. I use DE on my tomato and cucumber plant's. I just had to cover then with shade cloth because it's just too hot here in Florida. I'm going to use the aspirin too.
Thank you so much.
😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘 thanks a bunch! For the gypsum tip! Hallelujah!
Using all four powders all the time. At planting I add two tablets of aspiring for the tomatoe and one tablet for the pepper and the eggplant plants. Also, I mix DE with the potting mix to prevent fungus gnats.
My dalmatian, Daisy, loves when I put bonemeal down 😂😂
Fantastic video! As a chemist I can confirm aspirin is organic, meaning it contains carbon. 😂
😁
Thanks for the great tips Brian! I'm definitely going to get some diatomaceous earth. I already have Willowbark so I think I'm going to use that route just because I have it. Looking forward to getting ahead of some of the pests in the garden
Try to not breath in blowing diatomaceous earth. It has the potential to cause silicosis.
Willow stems are good for a lot of things. Willows protect cows and their calves, the stems help things grow in your garden. I haven't practiced this personally but my Uncle's have and it seems to work. It's wierd but it stimulates the plant somehow, I can't figure it out cause I'm not a sientist.
It has a natural rooting hormone ❤
This is very interesting information. Thank you for these suggestions. Do you have suggestions for aspirin application frequency in high desert area? Dry hot climate, 6000 ft.
Such an informative video. Thank you Brian!!
Would the aspirin solution help flowers and plants like hydrangea and iris from black spot or dahlias from their diseases?
Do I still need to blend the aspirin with the water if I use the powder version, or can I just add the powder directly into the sprayer? Thanks!
Awesome! Thanks Brian!
I counted 5 here:
1. Gypsum
2. Bone meal
3. Compost activator
4. Diatomaceous earth
5. Aspirin
Bone meal is the activator
Thank you.
The added benefit of using aspirin on your tomatoes is your tomatoes won’t get a headache!
Especially helpful if you co-plant your tomatoes with head lettuce! 😂
😂
Awesome! Thank you!
Instead of DE, I use cheap clay cat litter around my plants as a mechanical barrier to slugs and snails. Like DE it will wash away under heavy rain conditions, but I have tight soil so that is actually helpful.
At the beginning of the season I'm mixed up the aspirin solution now two months later is it still good or do I need to mix up another batch. Thanks
8:32 I'm pretty hard-core 😂 I was thinking, hmmm I don't like aspirin in my body, I don't think it would be good to put into the plants I'll be eating 😅 I've been fortunate enough to never have issues with losing tomatoes to pests. SQUASH BUGS on the other hand...
Great info. Thanks.
Hi Brian, I’m in SoCal zone 10A-B. I started seedlings in growing trays May 5 and within a week the potting soil was crusted over. I got zinnia, and a few cosmos. Can you tell me how to prevent this from happening again thank you.
I'm in central California and my garden soil (sandy soil) crusts over. I've been adding compost and manure for 48 years and still can't stop the soil from developing a water repelling crust. I have to always break up the ground before watering.
🎉thank you 🎉great information 😊
I eat a lot of bananas and I put the peels in a sealer jar with water and the next day I pour it on my tomato plants. Do you know if this is a necessary addition of phosphorus or is it not doing much for my plants.
What do you recommend for Sandy soil?
Bone meal made from livestock bones could potentially carry BSE. At least, that is the concern some have expressed. Some bone meal is made from fish bones and might be preferable.
Will DE eliminate blight? I just noticed the lower leaves on my tomato plant have started turning yellow and spotty. I have DE on hand right now and can apply.
No, blight is a fungal problem. DE attacks arthropods, both good and bad, so use only where you really need to.
Thanks Brian. 💐💚🙃
Ca mixiing powdered milk in soil around plant watering it in be beneficial?
What can I use on roses for aphids n leave spotting
I love to learn the secret for aphids as well ...
Per Brian, I planted nasturtiums near my roses as a trap plant for aphids. I was stunned how good it worked. I’ve never had aphids since (and had them for years prior).
DE is a fraction of the price purchased at a feed store than it is a garden centre or Amazon
So I still have a question about pruning determinate and cherry tomatoes. Should I remove lower leaves that may touch the ground or get splashed by rain?
I don't but it wouldn't hurt
Hi Brian,
Would the salicylic acid in Aloe Vera leaves have the same effect?
I thought the research and gypsum in clay wasn't good. Do you mind sharing your sources?
How much is 600 mg aspirin powder when measured?
So you would grind 2 (325mg) Aspirin to get the 600mg of powder for the spray, is that correct?
I wonder if I could use goody powder aspirin?
I bought the powdered aspirin however because it is for horses, it doesn't have regular measurements on the tub. Can you please tell me how much is 600 mg.? I guesstimated and used 1 teaspoon but I would like a real measure so I don't overdose my tomatoes and chile's~ Thank you~
Thanks for the information.
Can anyone out there tell me where to get an inexpensive source of gypsum? It is very expensive to buy from the garden centres. Diatomaceous earth is also very expensive. It is used as an animal feed supplement so you can find it in large bags at your local animal feed supplier. I live in Western Canada so found a 30 lb bag of it at Peavey Mart for a fraction of the cost of the garden centres.
My dad used to collect used gypsum board (dry wall) and throw it down where the soil was hard, then walk over it with boots on to break it into smaller pieces. Of course, parts of the pasture would look like a junkyard for a couple years until the rain and plants had incorporated it a little more. God knows what is in wallboard these days, and if you find old stuff, you will need to watch out for lead paint. My did only use unpainted.
Can also use regular milk
Following the pruning vid! LOL! 😉👍
should have one more. azomite. i also use volcanic ash available here from mt. st. hellen eruption.
Yay! You answered my DE question! Good to know as I’ve got ants in my garden 😕 Have a great weekend Brian!
A garden with no ants would be a sight to see
You too!
@@adoschtinad 😂😂 indeed 😆
I've read gypsum is good to correct ph. The ph in my vegetable beds are all around 7. Would gypsum fix that?
7 is neutral 6 to 7.2 is about right for a garde
May I suggest a 5th powder that will help you pull weeds for hours on end?
I looked for aspirin powder but they all had caffeine in them too. Will that hurt the plants? I didn't see a link to the one you have, is it caffeine free?
What about baking soda? I have heard it can help with pests.
Doesn't diatomaceous earth also hurt worms in your soil?
I was subscribed, and just noticed that I no longer was subscribed for some odd reason because I never unsubscribed! I re-subscribed to your channel...
White willow powder instead of aspirin?
My husband mixed all my tomato seeds together and I planted them all how do I tell which is which
I just got aspirin at Dollar Tree the other day specifically for tomatoes and peppers
Do the same. The cheapest.
Were they uncoated? I have looked everywhere I go and only found coated.
@@lisakramer9373 Yes, they are uncoated
@@lisakramer9373Yes. They were uncoated
Does diatomaceous earth hurt worms in the soil?
i need a video for grapes
DE kills beneficials too, so that one needs additional warnings
How do I convert 600mg to ounces
Personally using DE is a pain. Hard to apply and then next watering it is worthless as it got wet.
and for watermelon
I use Diatomaceous Earth very conservatively because it will kill honeybees too. I don’t just fling it everywhere.
DE will also kill beneficial bugs as well. Use with caution!
