Lyrics are very important: I was army mechanic, I worked with the men I worked on my back, I tried to fit in Torque wrenches and ratchets, multi-meters and scales Grease on my face, grease on my hands, grease under my nails It was so hard to see 'til it attacked But my enemy wasn't Iraq Soldiers bartered and traded, that's the way our world works Trading favors for favors in the sand and the dirt What I wouldn't give them they'd try to take And when I refused them they made me pay It was so hard to see 'til it attacked But my enemy wasn't Iraq I stood my ground, I didn't give in I drew a line again and again When they whistled and whispered When the wind kicked up dust I looked to the sky, asked the lord why I had no one to trust It was so hard to see 'til it attacked But my enemy wasn't Iraq A salute and a wink, a little pat on the back My enemy wasn't Iraq
Every time I see someone who served, I tell them about Mary's CD and what she has done and the Soldiers Song Writing website. They are amazed and very thankful I told them about this. Thanks Mary.
Damn. At almost 76, I still haven't heard a better song than 'Iraq' in every respect. Though truth to tell, whichever Mary Gauthier song I'm listening to is my favorite right then. Every single one.
Lyrics are very important:
I was army mechanic, I worked with the men
I worked on my back, I tried to fit in
Torque wrenches and ratchets, multi-meters and scales
Grease on my face, grease on my hands, grease under my nails
It was so hard to see 'til it attacked
But my enemy wasn't Iraq
Soldiers bartered and traded, that's the way our world works
Trading favors for favors in the sand and the dirt
What I wouldn't give them they'd try to take
And when I refused them they made me pay
It was so hard to see 'til it attacked
But my enemy wasn't Iraq
I stood my ground, I didn't give in
I drew a line again and again
When they whistled and whispered
When the wind kicked up dust
I looked to the sky, asked the lord why I had no one to trust
It was so hard to see 'til it attacked
But my enemy wasn't Iraq
A salute and a wink, a little pat on the back
My enemy wasn't Iraq
Thanks Bruno :)
Thank you.
I was there in 03'. Hasn't been the same since. I keep that deep inside or at least try to. Thank you for sharing your love.

A deep song, capturing the unseen wounds of war. Probably the best war song ever. Thanks for telling the stories of soldiers.
Maybe... maybe Summer Side of Life...

I do that too. Same reaction. I also tell others because as a nation we're trying to put that behind us. But for many, it's barely under the surface.
This whole CD is amazing I think its Mary's best work so far..
That's because on the entire CD/Album, all eleven songs were co-written with and for wounded veterans.
What a beautiful singer. I just heard her for the first time today
Love the power of the lyrics and the tenderness in the music. Another beauty Mary! Thank you.💜❤ 💗☮
