God Bless Melodyne. I say this on behalf of all home studio folks who have struggled with manually reducing the sibilants in vocals. What a tedious and time-consuming job it has been. Now Melodyne is truly magnificent. Of course, Melodyne does not work with some vocal tracks.
I disagree..Which vocals do they not work with for example? Melodyne is useful for all vocals and even some other instruments as demonstrated in this lovely tutorial!
I used Melodyne extensively in the 1st edition. I noticed that when singers don't create very clear notes, the tuning was problematic, because there was nothing actually there to tune. I think a higher resolution recording helps as well. The software needs data to process.
Ron Vai i think he was more saying “it’s not always the best choice” on some vocals, which was always true. If you have the luxury of owning multiple tuning softwares, sometimes one would just kind of work better on some vocals. Like, Waves Tune is my least used but I had a really raspy aggressive vocal track where it sounded more natural than Melodyne or Antares to me. Still, if you can only have one, Melodyne is the one to get IMHO. Take the time to learn and you can always get professional sounding results. Version 5 fixes the biggest pain points of editing for me and I love it.
I guess the only thing melodyne CAN’T do (from listening to and watching this video) is turn a crappy ass song into a NON crappy ass song … But I’m still getting it. Take my $$
When using the pitch tool, and moving blobs up and down, how can I turn off the snap effect instead of having to hold down the option key (Apple). It seems that sometimes I have it turned off, but I don't know how this happens. Thanks.
at 4:23 he right clicks and shows the pitch correction tools at the bottom. my melodyne 5 essential only has the main tool (arrow), scroll tool, and zoom tool. am I really not supposed to have the manual pitch correction tools aside from the macro? thanks to anyone who can clarify.
That’s right. Melodyne essential comes with a basic toolset. The advanced tools are available in the other Melodyne editions only. However, the Main tool in Melodyne essential also changes to the main Pitch tool, for example, when you hover over a blob. Hope this helps.

Perhaps you have Melodyne essential then? Melodyne essential comes with a few basic tools only while the larger Melodyne editions have all the tuning tools shown in this video.
You could split a note several times and move the individual segments slightly up and down. After that, you could refine the vibrato with the Pitch Transition tool.

OK, I sing terribly (IMO) but I've been thinking that changing it as much as Melodyne can -- is it still my performance anymore? I think of musicians with not so great voices like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, etc and I wonder if these guys would have been as influential as they were had their vocals been "perfect".
You don’t have to aim for ‘perfect’ vocals (whatever that is supposed to be), but having a tool like Melodyne gives you lots of options from hard tuning to subtle changes - which you may or may not want to apply to your vocal tracks. That’s up to you. 🙂
For the sake of constructive criticism, isn't it absolutely possible to change the frequency of an "S" sound just by manipulating your lips and changing the pitch?

@@celemony true, there's not really a single note produced, more just noise but it alter the frequency to some degree like detuning a hi-hat sample (or moving an EQ/filter, I suppose).

@@matarison who cares? i dont care if you're using autotune for an effect or any other tuning software just for cheating. ultimately music is about being an artist, and that's the unique thing about music is that you could be great at performing and terrible and writing, or amazing at writing and shit at performing. you're lucky if you're good at both, and being good at performing isn't really the art part. it's just like some people can write incredible music but have to hire someone to write lyrics cuz they're just not good with words even though they're still very musically gifted. the art matters most, and if you've got the whole package that's dope and you're incredibly lucky.
They can sod right off, another $150 they want for upgrade from studio, disgraceful! Well done Melodyne I’ll never spend another dollar with you. So annoyed

In the Options menu, go to ‘Pitch Grid’ and check ‘No Snap’.

Are you not able to upload tracks with multiple notes at the same time and be able to select specific notes in the middle of it in Melodyne Essential?
What you are looking for is our DNA algorithm for polyphonic audio which is only available in Melodyne editor and Melodyne studio. Hope this helps.

a ton of work went into making Melodyne 5. It makes sense it's a paid upgrade
With such improvement, I would pay again. You still have the option of not upgrading though. Shouldn't people's hard work be paid?
