- Germany is not exactly known for its street food. But in the city of Hamburg, innovative chefs are trying to change that - by updating Northern Germany’s quintessential street snack: the Fischbrötchen, or ‘fish sandwich’. People have been eating this simple, yet extremely tasty snack for decades now. Although the humble Fischbrötchen is considered by some to be a bit old fashioned, young chefs are trying to update its image; they’re introducing global influences, such as new spices, and striving to invigorate this staple of northern German street food with some unexpected flair.

As an American living in Germany I have always appreciated their Fischbrötchen. There is a fresh fish food truck that comes to our town once a week. They have great fish on buns/rolls, people are always standing in line. I usually go for the classic - Lachsbrötchen - slices of salmon on a roll topped with marinated onions, pickles and reshly cracked black pepper. To die for!
Gosh, that sounds like a glorious combo!
Well, we dutch people love it to. And lets be honest, the Nordsee just has phenomenal fish. 3 Thumbs up to the Fischbrötchen, all over the globe
shout out to bitterballen, that shit slaps.
It's also very popular in northern England too. Even the South. It's a favourite for a lot of euros.

Got to go to Germany when I was in the USAF in 1974. We stayed for a week because of paperwork on the prisoners we were taking back to the US. Two German Air Force guys we met took us to see Hamburg and one of our treats was the fish sandwiches. Even back then, they were wonderful. I wish I could go back.

Hm... as a German, I am always surprised when people like our strange country - but in your case it was in the mid-70s when things were sort of more normal than today. Anyway, you can get Swedish pickled herrings (Abba brand) in the US, I think - with sliced onions, sour pickles, butter & a milk bread roll you should at least be able to re-create the traditional "Fischbrötchen"...
I always feared eating German and Japanese food when I was abroad and only ate what was available to us doing my tours..

i once was on the island called rügen with my grandparents, i remember having a salmon sandwich from a takeawayrestaurant that was a boat, ive never had such a great salmon sandwich ever again. It was just so fresh, you cant really get that freshness when ur living in the middle/south part of germany. I also got told that the restaurant just opened at that time and before it opened it was out on the sea to catch the fish. I will never forgett that salmon sandwich, also cause there was so much salmon on it compared to them here in middle germany.
As a Polish person in Canada that grew up on pickled herring, this flavor would bring me home.

In the US....that looks so good!
It's also a good way to mix your carbohydrates and proteins together. Read it on a site and it said it was the best way to get both by combining both into one and not eating it seperately. which i feel is honestly true for the most part. It also tastes much better combined, like a sandwich.
I don’t blame them for liking it so much, it’s a local food they can get fresh, it’s a simple to prepare meal and it’s just overall a decent filling dish.

Memories. My grandfather's fish soup was legendary, especially after my father added his own, fiery aioli sauce. I've never had anything like it, and my father has been unwilling to make it after my grandfather died. I've been too intimidated to even try.

In my early days in Baltimore we used to have fried chicken and lake trout stores all over the city. They would have the best fried fish sandwiches dusted in cornmeal seasoned with Old Bay with a side of fries, that was dinner on a Friday night. You’d pair that with a half and half ( half lemonade, half iced tea) and a bean pie from the Muslims on the corner for desert. That was my go to for the season of Lent. Now the food scene has changed. Maybe we’ll get a lake trout food truck.

I remember my parents eating bismarck sandwiches growing up in Berlin... obviously as a child I didn't want anything to do with herrings especially not if it's cooked but now I'm a middle aged man and had some in Hamburg a few years ago...I have to say it's not for everybody but I appreciate it from time to time, if not just some rollmops

Lived in Germany for 3 years moved Back to the UK last year. Germany has a lot of healthy food options and they genuinely eat really healthy. There's Dean & David's which is kind of like a healthy food place serving salads smoothies etc and that's a chain throughout Germany. Also in the place I used to shop in (rewe) had a great salad selection were you help yourself. I lived in heidelberg which was a great place to live too. Visit Germany quite frequently now and yes got to say they have some excellent fish too.

Ideally go to the Fischmarkt at 4 am and shop till your arms drop and then let this superb sandwich reward you for all the hard work. An unconfirmed rumour claims this sandwich cures the side effects of a night out at the Reeperbahn.

Had the best sandwich I’ve ever eaten in Flensburg, Germany, right near the border to Denmark. Girlfriend’s aunt and uncle (German) went to a knitting club and my girlfriend and I went exploring. Gigantic line for a tiny little shack on a pier-“Ben’s Fischhütte” (fish hut). Brötchen tasted like it was baked a few hours earlier. Beautiful, crunchy crust. Don’t even remember the kind of fish-it was recommended to me by a local. Old timey boats moored all around. Fishermen with great beards and pipes like out of cartoons walking around. I dream of going back to that stand.
Before watching the video I thought this was gonna be the German equivalent of fish finger butty (those who live in northern England know what I'm taking about). But this is next level.

I love Fischbrötchen! And the more basic, the better - just good fish, a good bread roll and lots of onions. Nothing fancy, just excellent ingredients!
I'm not much of a fish/sea-food person but I would definitely try these.
Hamburg was the destination of choice while I was based in Germany. I have eaten many, many of these rolls during a weekend sesh in Hamburg. I'm a fan of rollmops; whacking fishes on a crusty roll with onion made perfect sense.
I'm from Northern Germany and I'm allergic to fish which sucks because I love fish and there are countless delicious ways to eat fish here. At least I can eat shrimp rolls.
This looks very similar to the danish Smørrebrød. Only difference is that we use rye bread and it is an open faced sandwich. My favourite is pickled herring with red onions on top and a glass of snaps/aquavit on the side!
Isn't Smørrebrød any bread topped with whatever you want, not just fish?
The german equivalent would be the Butterbrot, but the german version is way less extravagant than its danish sibling. It's usually just bread, butter, and one topping. Maybe a second one (like fresh onions on a particulary pungent cheese, or a cut up pickle on some salami), but that's about it.

Hell we even have complaints from prisoners in Alcatraz getting served lobster more than twice a week because it was cruel and unusual punishment.

You'd love the UK. We consider it cheap and cheerful. Fish finger sandwiches are very popular and the fish and chips shops do sell plain buttered rolls. good for chips and fish we look forward to your visit.

I am from west Germany and I had a mate from nothern Germany who I used to game with. He always told me about Krabbenbrötchen which sounded so weird to me, but he swore it is awesome.

They only sell those on the coast. I know one place in Brandenburg that sells them, but that is it. You need to visit Rostock or Hamburg to get one.

I used to love getting a bologna sandwich on a crunchy roll from the bakery in Germany.
You want fast eazy Mexican street food take your favorite bread. Throw in ground beef season anyway like brown it onion if you like cilantro anything give spice. Then add tomato, shredded cabbage, cheese enjoy it's called bollo LL makes y sound.

A fish roll is like a mojito both have only 3-4 ingrediants your product is only good if your ingrediants are good. I really like the new invention of the classic but i like that i can right away taste if someone knows what he is doing. Its an product like a burger easy to produce hard to master and its variety unachiefed.

I'm very surprised that it isn't that common.I sometimes buy packaged herring, salad, onions and fresh bread buns to make them myself. Never gave it that much thought, though I guess it's because I'm not that financially well off and have some nordic influence, also had it often as a kid. I really don't need the special/rare ingredients, but tourists surely want a special experience and not your standard, cheap Fischbrötchen. Anyway worth a try, if you want real northern-german food, it's not expensive.

No not this way. The bread and the way the fish is mixed is different from anywhere else. It is unique for Northern Germany to do it this way.

@@lacdirk this feels like a very specific qualifier for how these fish sandwiches are unheard of internationally. They probably use something unique on po boys in Louisiana, I wouldn't say they're unknown worldwide because they only add that detail in Louisiana

@@lacdirk picked herring and raw white onion eaten with a bread roll is very common in the northern midwest USA, states such as Wisconsin. It is no coincidence that Wisconsin has a large majority of their population with German descent.

I first had one in Bremen from a Nordsee stall, and have loved them ever since. Now I know why.
But there are even better Fischbrötchen. :D Next time go to Bremerhaven and their "Fischereihafen". There you can find best fish!

Thanks to modern logistics we luckily don´t even have to make the trip up north to eat these. Though I gotta admit that the freshness when eating them on the coast can´t be beaten.
The original version I would not try. But all of the others ones fried breaded and baked I would love to visit Germany. If I make enough money Gernany would be on my bucketlist of 1 week vacation things to do before I die.

I have some fish for breakfast every saturday, when i am shopping at the Münster Farmers Market (not this week tho, because of the snow chaos), there are some fresh fish vendors. I normally have deep fried fish (Backfisch), or Fischfrikadellenbrötchen (fishburger?, but the Paddy is compose from bigger junks of different sorts of fisch, from salom to hailbutt, crabs, etc. the indredients vary from week to week what ever fish they get delivered). When ever you have the chance to visit Münster, do your self a favor and visit this market, not just for fish.
Industrial and commercial food preparation really doesn't do fish any favors. If you grow up thinking fish is that ubiquitous fast food sandwich with breaded fish and... cheese, you are just going to think fish is not really good food. When I was in high school, I remember just stopping in the supermarket on my walk home, grabbing a fillet of cod or haddock, and pan frying it up in some butter and it was just heaven. Easier than a grilled cheese sandwich, and so much better. Your fish just has to be fresh, or flash frozen and properly thawed, and it will never disappoint.
